imu n ' 1 ' Til . 1- ' ' ' - A BIT OF HISTORY. DANIEL WKH-TEK ONCE IN SM1TII-VIELD- May 3, 1817. n still remembered by some of the old people of the town :im a day of sjnia! interest to all the citizens. Mr. Webster perhaps the most pro found statesmen ami orator of his day. was enronte from Hale :li to Wilmington on the -date above men - Honed, and did really pass through Jt.hnston county, and dined in the town at theTelfair Hotel, which stood on the Surles (now) lot south of the 'courthouse. The main body of this Hotel was for many years the court, howse, and was moved from the s"re of the present court house to whe e it stood until destroj'ed by fire in the Winter or 1880. The Hotel Telfair was first piesideJ over by Mrs. .Abby Telfair, the mother of the late bril liant Dr, A. F, Telfair, and here Daniel Webster, Mr. Webster and W R. Gaits took dinner, and what the writer remembers of the good old ladie of those days, who wore snow white cas and smoked long stem med pipes, he is of the opinion that the distinguesiied party were well dnied. . Mr, Gales of the party was editor of the Raleigh Register, organ of the Whig party of the State. But I am rambling, and must return to our in teresting traveler. Nothing of special interest oecurr. -ed while passing through the county, It is remembered that Mr, Webster took grat interest in everything by the road side. At Mr Uriah Bau comb's Tarm he left the carriage and entered the field where some hands were plowing ami examined the plows (the old cutter and dagger) and - expressed his surprise that the farm ers here still retained such primitive Implements. I do not douot that the school boy, whose task it has been to memorize Mr. Webster's speeches, will be anxions to know what brought Mr, Webster down this way. The writer is not positive but is of the opinion that this tour of the South was made by Mr, Webster in order to strengthen his chances for the nomination by the Wing party for the Presidency in 1848. The con vention was held and Zachary Tayx lor, of Louisiana, a Virgin'.an by birth and a General of the war of 1812, received the nomination. Like Clay,1 Calhoun and Blame, Mr Webster did not reacl the White House, the long cheerished object of his heart, but this did not dim the lustre of his genuis. No statesman, living or dead, ever made a more im perishable imprint upon the mind of the American people, or ever com manded more attention on the ios trnra or in the Senate chamber t'lan did 'Daniel-Webster. While travel ling in the north recently, the one thing of all others the inoit interest ing to the writer was the Bronze stat ue of Daniel Webster on Broadway In the city of New York, , beaut ifal with the sublime sentence from bis memorable reply to Hayne : Thc Union and Libert' one and inseper able, now and forever."
