Liiirt 14 1111 iirmiiv 51 1 all over thi3 land, there goes up every lay. the cry of hard times. The man who spends his money for drink, or chews it up In tobacco and snuff, and yet cries hard limes, is a Hying cons tradiction. Congress is trying to legislate re lief for the people on the one hand, while it legislates nakedness, hunger, starvation and death on the other by licensing the liqu-r traSc. When all the christian voters of this coun'ry awake to a fense of their fluty, to themselves, to their wivfs jnd children, and to thp Father they profess to love and serve, there will come to the people greater lelief M.an low tariff a el free silver. The christians, united as 1 hey ought to be. for the upbui'ding of their Master's kingdom, could get any ; proper legislation they might desire, : for no political party couhl afford to j nominate a candidate, or undertake a measure for which they would not vote, and I firmlv believe that the time is coming when prohibition ol i I Li liroiouno p 1 10-u ;nv, ue uuiiico .... . c -n .1 1 ! u ' 1 1 - the liquor tronu will come through! :.u-.lic-nee into realms of thought, .. ... r .1 ri t 0 the influence of the Church. I also believe, 'from my heart, that the best service our commissioners could ren. ler the ci izens of Dunn would be a refusal of liquor licenses. The saloons dong the streets are temptations which some of our men and boys do not resist, and here they learn, not -.he 'drink habit only, but other vices, ninety per. cent, of which would not be learned elsewhere. What shall 1. say for the faloon keepers ? I have no quarrel, nor abuse for them. They are' engaged in the trafic for the vejy same rea son that others, some of whom pro fess to be christians, are engaged i.i other things just as degrading in haracter for money. They are human beings possessing immortal soul- for wnose solvation my Savior died. Just as he dicdifor ray own sal vation ; and, while I hate their busi ness with a hatred supreme, I love them because Jesus loves them, and if I know my own heart, I would willingly lay down my life, if by ii they would be induced to turn to Him and live spiritually and eternall'. . To all of these gentlemen within reach of my pulpit I coidia'ly invite to hear me preach, assuring them that, while they may hear me make cutting thrusts at the liquor trafic, just as I do at all other sin, ad may sometimes hear me state facts which -luw up some of those engaged in it, in a very unenviable light, just as I do those engaged in other sins; yet they will never receive any abuse from me. I want them to be saved. To ibem and to all others who do not attend th services of God's house, 1 would give this friendly admonition : God, who has all power over you. both soul and body, in time and eternity, will ho'd you personally responsible for every shcIi opportun ity that you let pass unimproved. Your ignorance of the plan of salvas lion will not excuse you. because you could hear and learn if you would. Geo. T Simmons.
