For still the spirit woos her, A soul without a stain; And memory still pursue her With longings not in vain! He loses her who gains her, Who watches Juy by day t The dust of time that staiu.s her, The griefs that leave her gray, The flesh that yet .enchains her Whose grace hath Kissed away! Oh! happier he who gains not The love some seems to gain; The joy that custom stains not Shall still with him remain. The loveliness that wanes not, The love that ne'er can wane. He dreams she grows not older The lauds of dream among. Though all the world w ax colder, Though all the songs be sung. In dreams loth he behold her Still fair and kind and young. Jones, of Dunn. After the Instal lation services was over, Mr. Jones de livered a public add, ess to a cultured and an appreciative crowd, both of ladies and gentlemen. After the address, the ladies took charge of the Lodge Room and in a few moments there was a table the length of the room groaning with every thing that goes to make a real nice dinner, while the Brethren made lemonade as plentiful as water. All that was there went away knowing that it was good to be there, and just hoping for at least one more such an opportunity. Quite a n timber of our young people attended the ice cream party given last Tuesday night at the beautiful home of Mr. Eldridge Lee complimentary to Miss Sallie Atkinson, a beautiful and charming young lady from Fayettevllle. It was a pleasant occasion, everybody enjoyed it and many were the kind words of appreciation for the cordial and kindly manner in which Mr fc Mrs Lee received their invited guests. During the early part of the night there were indications of rain, but all the clouds were soon driven away by the beauty and brill iancy of the night and all na ture was illuminated by the glorious moonlight. The young ladies were prettier aud sweeter than ever before, and the transcendent beauty of the night combined with lovely girls and melodious music wove a web of fascina tion about the hearts of the gallant boys. Cupid always carries his points. One who was there. Our Next Sheriff ! Mr. Editor: As the County Convention is near at hand; it is time that our people should be easting around them for good and suitable men to till the various offices; as our home government is of the first importance. Among the many aspir ants for the several county offices, I hope our people may succeed in choosing the best to be our standard barers in the next campaign; for if there ever was, or can be a time when men men of irre proachable character should be put be fore the people, it is right now. The general trend of public thoughi now is, that a nomination is 110 longer a mantle to cover foibles of character, or lack of fitness or worthiness on the part of a candidate. While your correspondant has nothing to say against any gentle man who may want the office of sherift", still he would like to invite the attention of the democracy of Harnett to the claims of Mr. J. D. Barnes of Averas boro Township who is a candidate for that office. It will be remembered by oqr people that two j'ears ago sheriff McArtan anuo'inced to the people that he would not be in the field for sheriff and the friends of Mr. Barnes brought him out foi the office. After the fact had become generally known that Mr. Barnes was a caudidate.it was thought that the exegencies ot the party de manded that sheriff MrArtan be renomi natcd. It was too Lite for Mr. Barnes to withdraw and he received a very flatter- r.g vote at the hands of his people. Af ter he v:is made to see that it was best lor the party that the. old sheriff should be on the ticket he moved himself that the nomination McArtan be made unan imous; went home and did all in his pow er to elect hi succssful competitor and ! the w,,oe t;cket.
