The Populist, throughout Corlh 'Carolina pledged themaelve3 to the pepl3 as their frijndi while on ,' the hiuinj), and that their, plan was the only salvation .to the struggling nAisses ot toilers. The condition, of the country to-day is agiiust the toilers, and will eyer rotnain so, as long as such a gang hold the got en .1 In their hands. 'lue worst step the populist ever cade was when they stepped into the third party. Now the wisest Btep of ttaeirjife is to step oat and shake the dust of thirdpartyisrn from ir leet, and ask God to forgive them for their wanderings come back to the fold and ask their broths ers Democrats, to accept them, even longer worthy to enjoy the blessings you enjoy. You fo'!"wed after false Prophets who with fcilver tongues and lyidg Jips aid : tSOome and go with us, be our friends. Give ua the power and we will debtrby the old wals of democracy and rebuild tbemj; with gdd and silver, and when they are esiab.ished, (we the leaders of our children.) will come again and take you to .urs.-!vc3, that where we arc, there jou may be also, aud upon the throne of the White House you shall behold the smiling face of your King Marry Ann iiutler, seated, there, deal ing out fat ounces, now all you fellows who follow us shall have some fat ollice, even you shall be appointed, honored and exaulted to that office which gives you power over your neighbor you shall be a magistrate Now Mr. Populist, haye they come again after you? Have they taken you to the beautiful city of Washing ton and there bid you bohold your King. Butler ? Did you oet that fat utlioe at the ha; ds of your deceitful friends Do you love Butler fur; his kind interest manifested in your behalf on the stump?, Now don't you know you have been deceived aud thai you cau't -afford as wise and intelligent men, to remain iu the gang who have in every way proven themselves in capable and uncorapotent to fill the position to which tthey were elected, further umre than all this, they have proven themselves as false (that is the leaJers) as he who is the father lies. , The people must rule the govern ment and not the government rule the people. Come out from them and with these word stamped upon jojur Urt say: Democracy Democracy! Pil forsake thee not, Til loye the ever, 1M condern, thee never, 1'U tit fend tlree foreyer, and ever. The Populis say that their pa-ty and the Republican pwty makes a p it. It seemed to be a full l ouse i.i t se legislature. Two or three things wine!, have led me to my decision it may not be out of plaoe to mention : let lain not sure that .1 am the teacher you need H is true that I have had a degree of sacce99 here that, of course, is very gratifying; but the management of a school in your town under existing circumstances is quite different from the mannge-. ment of a" school here. I might h.tve filled the place with great .satisfaction to you and profit to the people ; I might have mado a failure, J 2nd. The sympathy, sacrifices and coNoperation of the people of th;s community and the success cf our work God havo been such that I postiveiy could not feel at liberty to leave them, while thoy desiro me to remain and the work prospers as at present, , Their struggles to build op a school in the place of such difficulties, to found an institution that ould be a blessing to their com unitv, aid in removing the dark cloud of ignorance that has gathered 'ver the name of our fair cctinty and one which would be an honor to our great State and nation jtbeir prayers for the success of our efforts aud their substantial aid in every appeal that 'has teen mae to them these things have bound our hearts togeth er and the tio could not be severed without a tear. IKSTITUTE, SMITHFIELD. ; Exei cisss Largely Attended- JOSEPHTJS DANIELS' ADDRESS- Reunion of old students. We bad the pleasure of attending the commencement of Tur'ington Institute at Smitbfield last Tuesday. The Academy, which is a ( spaciou one, was crowded to the door. The annual address was delivered by Mr. Josephus Daniel, the editor of the News and Observe, and probably the best known man of his age, in the Btate. his speech was peculiarly ap propriate to the occasion, and was full of pith, and yet eloquent. He addressed himself to the young men of the scho6i with reference to their duty in the future. First to God, to their country, a;id to themselves. 'He portrayed the lives and characters of such men a3 Mart'n Luther,, who shook the gilded throne of Popery, and snatched the sceptre from- the hands of the crowned patentate' of the City of the Crears; of Stone wall Jaokson, who led the dauntless and fearless bacaliions of the South to victory, as did Napoleon, the Great, lead the old Guard wLo knew "how to die but never surrender." Hp snoke of Thomas Jefferson, that architect, who framed the fabrick of the American republic to day the J wonder of the wot Id, as being as perfect as human ingenuity could suggest, in providing a government "oftbe people for the people." These types of great men were beid up to the young men for their emulation, and they were admonished to follow these jjreat ligths of history, and when the sun of their lives were sink ing beneath the western bills of a noble and manly career on ca-th, it would reflect back a halo of glory on their head'?, as they would pass be yond the "Icey river" at peace with their Maker and their country. Mr. Daniels' speech, as we hive said before was all that his friends expected and that is saying much. The exeroise.1 on Monday night consisted mostly of dialogues, and were well received by a crowed house. Tuesday morning at 10 :30 o'clock with a debate by "r lU- men ot the school, followed by the annual address. At 3 o'clock came the reunion of the old students. Several of the old students made short and interest"' mg speeches. Mr. John M. Morgan addressed the old students, and his speech was indeed a gem of deep thought Space and time forbid that we make any comment on his ad dress, Notwithstanding the rain Tuesday night, the boiue was crowded with anxious spectators, and tha exercises came fully up to the expectation of the lame audience. This commencement is most noted in the history of the school, which is a plain fact that the teachers a:e wide awake and that their labors are meeting with success. Long may Turlington Institute live and remain a brilliant star in this part of the State. NOTICE !
