The Democratic Executive Committee Pass Stirring Kesolutions The White Man And The White Metal. The democracy of the State and all others who believe in the true principles of the Dem ocratic party will rejoice, when they read of the action of the Democratic State Executive Committee last night. Every member of the commit tee with two exceptions was represented in person or by proxy. Chairman Manly pre sided and Mr. John W. Thomp son acted as Secretary. There was an intercharge of opinion in the nature of an ex perience meeting, and the re ports from all sections showed that the honest people of all parties are so disgusted with McKinleyism and Russellism and all they imply that the drift is all toward the Democrat ic party. f Plans were inaugurated for the organization of the party and an address was issued that will be hailed with delight from Murphy to Manteo. ... The words in that address were all weigh ed carefully, and they contain the germ of every Democratic speech that will be made next year. I he resolutions intro duced by Hon. Francis D. Win ston, of Bertie, which by order ol the committee are issued as an address and signed by Chair man and Secretary .Thompson are as follows : THE RINGING ADDRESS. j'The representatives of the Democratic party in North Car olina congratulate the Demo crats of her sister States, who, with a firm stand for the princi ples embodied in the Chicago platform, have won splendid victories for the people. "In rejoicing at the success of the Democratic party in the elections, we remind the people that Democratic majorities were largest, and Republican major ities were, smallest, in those States where that platform was the issue It is a significant fact that Democracy was defea ted in the states wliere local concerns were allowed to over shadow the principles of the party. Democracy is for all the people. The recent utterances of therpeople are plain and deci ded. J "They have expressed their faith in the Chicago plat form;jtheir belief in bimetallism, their 1 disgust and disapproval of Republican creeds and prac tices, and, above all, their ha tred of the tyrannous gold stan dard. They show that they will no longer submit to the robbery of trusts, the domina tion of bosses and the oppression of the money power." The condemnation of the hypocrisy, and falsehood of the Republican party is crushing. "It is equally pronounced, whether we hear it loud and free in the wheat' fields of Ohio and lowa, or struggling for utter ance iu me weaun congested centre of "Greater New York" wliere tiie candidates for mayor received 80,000 plurality candidate whose campaign ut J .. - . i T TA iciftiitc was., i iim it lemucriu wlio was Heart and soul for the Chicago platform and the' can- didates who stood on it 'o less significant is the fact that the people of the State of INew York have elected by 70,000 majority as chief justice of the court of Appeals a states man who sought support b announcing that he had voted for Hon. Wm. J. Bryan last year. "And with this glorious news of Democratic success we rejoice that "sham international bime tallism" has been There is now no.room puplican dodging. exposed, for Re- "We reaffirm our bT.ef in the principles of the Chicago and State platforms of the Demo cratic party as adopted in 1896, in their entirety ; and we -will still support those principles un til they are written in our laws. "We would be untrue to the firm and loyal allegiance the Democratic party of North Car olina bears to our greatest lead er. Hon. William J. -Bryan, if we failed to express our confi dence in his honor and integrity and in his devotion of head and heart to the welfare of all the people. We Emphasize the fact that our great victory was won in the States of Ohio and Ken tucky where he personally ap pealed to the people. "We view with alarm the de pressed condition of trade and the low prices of all products raised by lour people but we re mind those who heard Repub lican orators, in 1896 predict dire disaster if the Democrats were elected that McKinley is President of these United States and both branches of Congress f Republican. The people are swiit to draw tne proper conclusions. , 'We thank all .patriotic citi zens who, joined with us last year in carrying tne otate tor our presidential candidate, and we invite to our future coun cils of the Democratic party the party of the people all men who believe in its nrincinles. UlllU 1I1JVI will assist in carrying out its policies. , "In less than one year oppor tunity will be given the voters to express a firm adherence to those .principles. We regret that the ballot box was not this year opened to all North Caro linians. North Carolina is now accidentally Republican. We ui;.ti,fnmKn,.Af intelligent and virtuous raenex, pected or hoped for the present rule in tins btate. we are sure all good men are eager for a change. We have fallen on evil days in North Carolina. They recall the days of recon struction. They demonstrate the truth that no Southern State can be governed with hon or and decency by the Republi can party. Too large a num ber of its voters are ignorant, for the masses to control and too large a number of the lead- i 1 i j - ers are venal ana corrupt to give North Carolina good gov ernment. We look with horror upon the evils wrought by a combination of . Republicans and the corrupt elements of the Populist party by means of which our legislature has be come a farce, many of our office holders become corrupt and criminal, and ignorance and vice raised above intelligence and virtue. We denounce the ef fort of this- combination to place the ensane of the State at the mercy of incompetent, vic ious and lustful men and we condemn the changes wrought in our laws where-by ignorant and impure men have been placed in control of schools, courts, prisons and asylums. These are the inevitable conse quences of Republican rule. The Democratic party promises the people on its return to pow er to correct all "these -abuses. In a letter to the Labor Com- missioner inr. ineopmius White, chief oyster inspector for the State, estimates that there are three thousand are more persons in the State en gaged in the oyster industry. Between 5,000 and 6,000 bush els are caught annually and sgld at from 15 to 80 cents a bushel. "The supply of oysters in the sounds and rivers of North Car olina, ".says Mr. White "is al most inexhaustable, and all the industry needs to make a grand success in a market sufficient to induce buyers to come to the State. And to do that dredg ing must take the place in part of tongs, which is a slow meth od of taking oysters.
