THE COUNTY UNION DUNN, Harnett County, N. C. Entered accoidin? to postal regnla sions at the poptoffice at Dunn, X. C, as tecond class matter. J. P. PirTMAN, Proprietor,. A. M. WoonALL, Editor. TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION. Three Months 25 Cents. Six Months 50 Cents. One Year $1-00. Sent by Mail. Payable in advance. Dunn, N. C, Junk 8, 1808. Latest From the War. This morning's papers con tain good news from tlio seat of war. The navy department at Washington yesterday gave out the following official bulletin from Admiral -Sampson : Secretary of the Navy : Bombarded forts Santago 7 :'H to 10 a. m., -.to-day, June Gth. Silenced works quickly without injury of any kind, though with in 2000 yards. 'SAMPSON." In tills bombardment the Span ish admit that six men were killed and seventeenwounded on board the Jteina Mercedes in the harbor, and three oflicers killed and one oflicer and seventeen soldiers wounded on land. .Reports also say that Ameri cans landed troops near Santiago and an engagement followed in which the Spanish troops were; routed. The United States crusier Buf falo, which was purchased from Brazil, arrived at Newport News, Ya., yesterday. The monitor Monterey and the collier Brutus with coal sail ed from San Francisco yesterday "for Manila to re-enforce Dewey. The insurgents in the Phillip pines are very active and have been doing considerable fighting recently. They fought one bat tle which lasted SO hours and routed the Spanish troops. The 'Navy department gave out the following oflicial statement from Admiral Dewey Monday : ''Admiral Dewey reports the insurgents . actively engaged within the province of Cavite. They have won several victories, have taken prisoners about 1, S00 men and o0 ollicers of Span ish troops, not natives. The Ar senal at Cavite has been prepar ed for occupation by the United States troops upon their arrival on the transports." Senator Butler in his Caucas ian of last week says that the Democratic party in the State defeated a co-operative arrange ment to elect an anti-monopoly legislature and are responsible for the election of Pritchard to the Senate. The party to which Sfcnator Butler claims to belong had a majority in the last legislature on joint ballot and his party's leaders (he among them says Skinner) had made a deal to the e fleet that his party was to vote for a Re publican for Senator, and of course it was understood that Pritchard was to be .the man. Butler tried to fool his follow ers in making them believe he was against Pritchard. The honest men in the Populist par ty who dig a living out of the soil are learning something about the wily Senator and he has found it out and knows that his name is "mud" unless he can manage to fool them again. The State convention put him in the hole he had prepared for the Democrats. The war has taken nearly all the interest out of politics, but the Caucasian savs that a lame crowd of gold bugs attended the State Democratic conven tion. Strange to us that a con vention dominated by gold bugs and corporation lawyers should pass such strong. resolutions for free silver and against monopo lies. Every body knows that it was a Democratic convention composed of men who had the best interests of the State at heart, and their actions prove it. It seems now as if the Pop ulists did want to really fuse with the Democrats. They seem to be at sea and know not what to do. Come back, gen tlemen, and vote with the Dem o c rat i c p a r t y a n th f o r white s u -premacy in North Carolina. You can't object to our plat form. We will take you back and blot out the past Democratic lamp is still ing and while it burns it fully lights the path for tie re rs to return. The tnras Reply to Mr. S pence. Mn. Editor ; In your last week''; naner i ------ i - j. ed, "Stop the cider saloons bv Mr. Spence. As you know Archie De Keyzer to whom he referred, has been arrested for carrying on the business of retailing liquor without license w'ith in tent to defraud the government which is made an ofl'ence under Section 3242 of the Revised Statutes of the United States. And in that article the business men of our town who are fol lowing a legitimate business, authorized by Taw and allowed by our worthy board of com missioners, are put in an atti tude more degraded and more despicable than one who vhas wickedly, designedly, wilfully and maliciously broken the laws of the government for which fine and imDi'isonment mav be inflicted. We want ! Mr" Spence and the public to i-.-c.Ui tT.nf .p wlm he line; been pleased to designate as Cider Saloon keepers, have done absolutely nothing to be taken coginzance of by the Fed eral or any other court. True we have local option in' Dunn, but the Statute only mentions spiritous liquors. Webster de fines them to .be, "a strong, pungent or stimulating liquor, usually obtained by distillation as rum, brandy, "gin, whiskey." Again, he says, "that which causes excitment and animation of the mind' Therefore we unhesitatingly say without fear of successful contradiction that there is no animating or excit ing properties in either the cherry bounce or champagne referred to by Mr. Spence. It has never been carried through a process of distillation or refinement, and hence there can be no "nigger iri the wood pile" about this matter. Send the officers of the town and government around to our establishments, they will find open doors. We are not sur prised at the travelling man he referred to as trying to sell him a beverage and offering as an inducement that it would make him sing. If our friend don't stop acting so .peculiarly and shooting such wild thoughts through the press and especial ly showing such excitement of mind he'll have more callers of that kind in the future than in the past. We are as far from bringing liquor back into the town as Mr. Spence or any oth er man, but if you stop the cherry bounce and champagne, then in justice stop coca-cola, lemonade and milk-shake stands which are just as injurious to the boys which Mr. Spence is lamenting over (with a lamen tation characteristic of ' Surge Plunket) as anything obtained from the tigers that can see. "The. mills of the gods grind slowly," but they get there all tke sariie. . C. W. Lee. J. L. Benton. One Minute Cough Cure is the best preparation I have ever sohl or used ami I can't say too inueh in its praise.' L. M. Kennon, Merchant, Otlell, Ga, Hood & Grantham. The raiding an arm' of im munes from yellow fever for work in Cuba will, we think, bo a diiiicult task. Twenty thousand white 'men in the South that are immune to this disease will be hard to find. The negro comes as near being immune to it as possible, and they do not seem to be anxious to volunteer for service in the army. Bid Yobb Taifcs cotfs Emulsion through the winter? If so, we are sure it quieted your cough, healed the rawness in your throat, increased your weight, gave you more color, and made you feel better in every way. But perhaps your cough has come back again, or you are get ting a little thin and pale. Then, why not continue the same helpful remedy fight through the summer? It will do you as much good as when the weather is cold Its persistent use will certainly give you a better appetite and a stronger digestion. It will cure your weak throat and heal your inflamed lungs. It will cure every case of consumption, when a cure is possible. Don't be persuaded to take something they say is just as good. All Druggists, 50c. and $i. Scott & Buwne, Chemists, N.Y. i o,-, nvrir. ontitl.ion tiie morning oi me In Memory of Kirby P. Stewart. Died at his home iri Wake county, near Winslow, N. C, , . . , 2nd of March, 189S, Kirby Stewaiv, son of James II. and Samanthy Stewart, in the 23rd year of his a"-e, after a long illness from a complication of troubles which balfled the skill of the very best physicians. He was a young man of many excellent qual ities, was modest as a girl, perfectly honest, arid upright in all his dealings, above an ac tion of even doubtful propriety, lie was to have been married in a few days to Miss Corinna Matthews, a pretty girl of Har nett county, when lie was tak en sick from which he was to never recover. For a long time this faithful young woman nursed her sweetheart day and night, doing all in her poAver to nurse him back to life and health again. Some - days ho w."s mvc comfortable, but real ! hT no better, : but during one of 'the moments, when he was seemingly better, .he stood be side his promised wife long enough to take the vows which made them one, for the few days only, of the life that re mained for him. But those were happy peaceful days, al- though a great sufferer, for he felt in his soul God had forgiv en his sins, aiid that there was a home for him in the ' 'beauti ful .beyond." and that his own little wife was the watcher by his couch, hers the hand that softened the pillow, soothed his fevered brow and administered cooling draughts to his parched lips. He was happy and will ing to die, just when the Lord should' call him away from lov ed ones here. Although everything wTas done to stay the grim messenger death, became, and with his freezing kiss, closed the eyes and sealed forever in death the lips of this young husband, son and brother. He was dress ed in the handsome - suit which he had worn but a few moments, onCe before, and buried in the grave in front of the house in which lie was;born, and mar ried, and had died. xV pretty spjot where the birds love to sing, and where mother and sister and little wife daily go and plant flo.wers and bedew tjlem with their tears. "He was ? a good brother, a dutiful son and a faithful sweet heart, and loving husband, and may the God, who made ' him happy, forgave his his sins, and made death seem only a dream, take care of, and comfort the bereaved ones is the wish of his uncle. According to the Caucasian, Senator Butler's paper, any man who happens to be fortun ate! enough to own a few thous and dollars is a gold bug, no matter what his profession may bo.: In the last issue it calls Jule'Carr, of Durham, known all over the country as an out spoken advocate of the free coinage of silver, a gold bug. It calls him a gold bug banker who desires to more thoroughly establish the gold standard. It intiinatesthat every man who is a banker or a corporation law yer is dishonest and would sell out the people, if he could, for a few paltry thousands. Honest people can't always be fooled and prejudiced without a cause. A Sure Thing you You. A transaction in which yon c:yiaot !o-e; a sure tiling. It is said that Leiter has made a clear profit 'of-$4,000,000 in the deal, a daily average for four teen months of $10,710' profit per day. There have been losses by some wheat dealers of course but the wheat growers have made money on Leiter's deal. SAM JP SON Seems to be holding up his end of the string at Porto Rico, just destroying the fortifications and capturing the towns. Must haTe a little of the grit that Samson of old possessed. He destroyed his thousands -without a gun, and of course it was expected with all the late improved guns and battleships at the command of the Sampson of to-day, that he would clean up the Spanish fleet on the high seas and knock the forts into a cocked hat. -While there are late improved guns there - are also late improved Bicycles, and these bicycles are on sale ati GAI WE Y & JORDAN'S who have turned loose their big guns on the strong .fortification of HIGH PRICES, and its walls are now crumbled and an up-to-date Bicvcle can now be obtained at prices never before heard of.
