Thev are grown up in weeds and one cannot travel them after a rain without getting the feet wet. Read the address of Chair man McLean in this issue. It, is a strong letter a ad all white men "who are not sorry they are white" will endorse it. Another negro has been appointed postmaster at Scot land Neck. This one is a school teacher. The other was a bar keeper and his appointment was defeated. The train got the lower jaw of a razor back yesterday. J I is hogship was trving to root the train.off the tr in town. One less than we Let the 'good "work "go on. Mr. W. D. Thornton has finished his new blacksmith shop and moved in. He man ufacturers a splendid baggy and our readers may watch out for his "ad" in the near future. - A train loaded with sol diers passed here Sunday morn ing going South. We could not learn what troops they were or whither they were bound. Uncle Sam gives out little news now about his boys. ' Don't forget to talk the "White Supremacy Club" idea among your neighbors.' and get them to join you in establishing them. Every lady in the coun ty is invited to become- mem bers of these clubs. The white men of North Carolina must rule North Carolina. " A young white man named Thomas A. Fowler who lives a few miles from Dunn, was ar rested yesterday morning by deputy sheriff B. F. Smith upon i a warrant charging him with an assault with a pistol. He was brought here for trial and the ease was continued at his re quest until Friday. John Sills, a sort of half idiotic white man who lives over in Cumberland, was taken to jail at Fayetteville Saturday afternoon by Constable J. C. Pope. Sills had whipped his wife so badly that she left him and went to her father's to live lie went after her and made threats and attempted to as sault her with his knife. Through some of our sub scribers at Turlington, we learn that our papers did not reach that postoffice last week. On investigation we found that the papers were sent out from here hut were not taken out at Tur linsrton and came back to Dunn. We hope this will not happen again. -We want every voter in Harnett county to read The Union during this campaign, and if you are not a subscriber now is the time to become one. We shalHight with the whole armor of white supremacy gird ed about us, and if you desire to vote intelligently you must read. Remember 25 cents will carry you through the. entire campaign. See-your neighbor and ask him to subscribe. A crazy negro in Fayette vill, Monday morning created considerable excitement and did near a thousand dollars worth of damage before he. could be stopped. He secured a hatchet and went down the main busi ness street demolishing all the glass fronts as he went. The large glass front in the Frank Thornton building was a com plete wreck. The negro was stop at tb ft HiisVp Ha rd ware -House when a white man knock ed him down with a spade. We hear the name of F. P Jones, Esq., of our town spok en oi xor tlie nominee of the Democrats for Senator from this district. Harnett is entitled to name the Senator this vear and we would be pleased to see Mr. Jones get the nomination. He is a strong man, is widely and favorably known in the district, and, would make an excellent campaign. The white men of Averas boro township in precinct No. 2 are requested to meet Messrs- John Lucas. H. V. Monitor, t? L. Godwin and D. II. Wilborn, committeemen, at Spring Hill School House next Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock for the purpose of organizing a White Supremacy Club. Every man who favors white supremacy and will vote for it is invited to attend. A special invitation is given to the ladies. We understand that Capt. J. L. Autry, of Sampson is be ing spoken of as the probable nominee of the Democratic party from Sampson for the Senate. We do not know Capt. Autry only by reputation, but those who do know him .say he is probably the strongest man the Democratic "party could put up. He is a well-to-do farmer, and a lutiu ui mucii experience, a deep thinker, and a Democrat of the old type. Teacher's Institute. The County Institute for Harnett County white teachers is in session at Lillington this week and much. interest is be ing manifested in the work. Prof. J. Y. Joyner, of the Greensboro Normal and Indus tral College for girls, is conduc ting the Institute. There are be tween forty-five and fifty teach ers in attendance-nearly vevery teacher in the county. Prof. Campbell says it is by far the largest attendance and the best Institute ever held in the county Prof. Joyner is very much pleased with the enthusiasm and interest ' in educational work of the teachers present. The average age of the teachers in attendance is 25 years, and hand the average experience in teacliing is oi years. This shows that our teachers are of considerable experience and much better prepared to give instruction than formerly.) Everybody in the county in-, terestedin education is cordially invited to attend the session of the Institute Friday. Prof. Jovner will then de liver an address to the public. There will be other addresses also and recitations and decla mations by the teachers, inter spersed with music. A large crowd is expected. Millions Given Away. i It is certainly gratifying to the public to know of one con cern in the land who are not afraid to be generous to the needy and suffering. The pro prietors of Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, coughs and colds, have given away over- ten million trial bot tles of this great medicine ; and have the satisfaction of know ing it has absolutely cured thousands of hopeless cases. Asthma, bronchitis, hoarseness and all diseases of the throat, chest and lungs are surely cured by it. Call on N. B. Hood, druggist, and get a trial bottle free. Regular size 50c. and $1. The most beautiful book of the year is "The First Fallen Hero," which has just been published by Mr. Sam W.i Bow man, of NorfolkrVa. A Clever Trick. It certainly looks like it, but there is really no trick about it. Anybody can try it who has lame .back and weak kidneys, malaria or nervous troubles. SVe mean he can cure himself right away by taking Electric Bitters. This medicine tones up the whole system, acts as a stimulant to liver and kidneys, is a blood purifier and nerve tonic. Holloway for Register. I notice that Monday, Aug 15th has been selected, as the - ' time for holding the county Democratic convention. On that day we are to nominate a candidate for Register of Deeds. I hear there are several can didates for that! office. Of course only one of these can get the nomination. I beg leave to ask the Democrats; of Harnett county to let's nominate Prof. Alvis C . Holloway for that of fice. I believe he will accept the nomination and I know of no other young man . in the county who would make a bet ter or more -competent officer. He is-of pure, genuine Demo cratic stock. Many of tire read ers of The Union know him personally and all of thein ought, by all means, to know something of this "" noble young man. .He was assistant teacher at Buie's Creek Academy for three years and we do not hesi tate to say that Buie's Creek Academy has never had a more faithful teacher nor one Wsjio was more universally loved and honored by every student under his charge. Nobody who knows him will doubt his fitness for the place. He had a great deal of experience in the work of the office while H. T. Spears wTas Register, and is fully competent to take charge of that office. Fellow Democrats let's nomi nate Prof. A. C. Holloway for Register of Deeds and we will have one man, at least, -who will be elected for he is univer sally popular and will carry a stronger vote than any other Democrat in the county. Of course every white man in the county 'will vote for Holloway and tyuite a number of the col ored people.. Nominate him and we will have a young man of learning, ability, clean of char acter, honest, social and an up right christian gentleman. He would make an ideal Register, and the convention, would hon or itself by nominating him. C. II. Biggs. Kyerylody Says So. You hear some white Repub licans say that they are as much opposed to negroes holding office as any Democrat, yet we see these same Republicans go into their conventions presided over by negro chairmans and by negro secretaries, or as at the convention in Lillington last Saturday, a white chairman and a negro secretary, and re commend and vote for them to be delegates and members of the executive committees etc. Their actions belie their words. The deceased came to Dunn from his home in Sampson county some thirteen months ago and lived with the writer, being employed by the South Dunn Manufacturing Com pany. For several days he had been complaining and left on Monday, July 4th, for his father's home in Sampson coun ty to recuperate, but was taken that night with typhoid fever frorn. which death resulted. Ho lay for days with a scorching fever which refused to yield to medicine uid careful nursing until 3 o'clock on July 21st when tlie death angel appeared and took tlie life unto God who gave it. The efforts of his physician and his brothers and sisters could not stay the hand of the Reaper. , His remains were buried in tno graveyara at nome, wnero he had told his brother-in-law, Mr. R. M. Crumpler, when in good health, that he desired to be buried when ho had finished this life. We desire to express heart felt gratitude to the many friends who were so kind and attontive to him in his illness and gave us muali help and comfort in nursing him. May God help us all to walk upright ly and deal honest as he did, and make many friends and no enemies. He was prepared to enter college in '1897 but never did.
