They are inteLi cenee, honesty and simplicity To successfully manage the in- t terests of a municipal coipor ation the keenest intelligence is necessary. Conditions aie con stantly changing and new prob lems arising. The men charger, with the responsibility of ad ministration must be able u> think and act quickly and make > few* mistakes. They mus.. above all things, be progressi\ e. peering into the mists of the future for new landmarks an•; guideposts rather than i:ig i ,_ ressolute among the unchange | able errors of yesterday. Without moral and poiitica honesty government Lecom.' dangerous and corrupt. il( esty in the conduct of muni > ■ pal affairs needs to be positive | rather than negative. It must be of that sterling and energetic 0 character that will render and •; compel faithful and loyal ser- 1 vice. There are other ways of robbing a city than stealing i from its treasury. It may be j 1 robbed by careless and incom petent work. It may be robbed j 1 and permanently injured by in- ' ferior skill, and the honest and 1 capable public officer is the one c who guards the interests of the L people at every point. ' The government of the town , of Dunn during the past year j 1 has been in the hands of men j : who have had every interest of the people and of the town at ' heart. They have tried to give 1 the public satisfaction and now 1 that the time is drawing near 1 fur another election it is time 5 that the citizens are looking about for men upon whom they 1 will cast the responsibility of government for the coming 1 year. I Died. Monday night about * o'clock ' Mr. W. J. Jarmon, oi this place, passed quietly away after several weeks confinement, his death resulting from consump tion. He came to Dunn about eight mouths ago and entered; the mercantile business which j he conducted successfully up to a few weeks before his death. He was about 30 years of age and was an industrious young man, possibly too much so for his own physical good. He connected himself with the Catholic church about three weeks before his death. The funeral took place at the ceme tery where his remains were interred yesterday afternoon at 2 :30 o'clock under the direction and charge of Father John, of Newton Grove, in the presence of quite a number of friends. Opererta—The Merry Milkmaid, j We clip the following from an Oxford exchange which speaks in complimentary terms of Mrs. John B. Booth, the charming wife of our townsman, Mr. John B. Booth, who has bought tobacco on this market during the past season. Mr. Booth left for Oxford Monday where he will spend several weeks. He will return at the opening of the tobacco season accompa nied by his wife, and expects to make Dunn their permanent home. The exchange says : "No rarer treat has ever been offered an Oxford audience than 'The Merry Milkmaids,' which will be rendered at the Opera House on the evening of .April 19th by r>o of our most talented young people. Under the man agement of that enterprising and gifted music director, Mrs. John B. Booth, the public may feel assured of a choice musical treat. Mrs. Booth's native tastes and talent, together with superior educational advanta ges, have given her exceptional charms in this line of work, and the church is to be congratu lated on the possession of so skilled a manager. Hear what The Dunn Hardware & Furniture Co. have to say. Sincerely yours, ] LONGMAN CT MARTINEZ. Texas Cotton Crop. The State cf Texas is turning into market in the present cot j ton year the greatest State crop ever marketed in the entire history of the staple. In 1808- >9 the State marketed 3,05~>.- 000 bales, at about five cmis r. 1 pound, receiving for it about j j .f."vS.S7C».OOO. Already this year j 3.300,000 bales have come int -•(•lit in 1 exits. and it is esti mated that fully 300,000 bales j more will be brought out. making the total crop of the State 3,000,000 bales. Miu-h of this magnificent crop \va- sold at nine cents a pound. It is safe to say that 3,000,000; bales brought nine cents a pound, leaving 600,000 bales to be sold at an average price of ; eight cents. This would carr\ the total value of the State'.- cotton crop to $ 1G9,000,000, or nearly double the sum that the ( crop lSi)B—'99 yielded. A cash cVop of such magnitude would make any State prosperous, and | Texas feels the monetary im | pulse, and enterprises of all [sorts are freely started from it. The 3.000.U00 bales that the State probably held on April 1 will be marketed at a lower price, but this cotton as a rule is held by men who will not severely feel the loss. The lo*s will be made good throughout the State by the check that the lower price will give to over planting. It is now believed the new acreage wi'l not be excessive—perhaps not larger than that of last year, and it the season be an average one the ci op of the State will not exceed 3.000.000 bales. At any rate no increase in cotton acre age is now anticipated, and this is due to the recent decline in the prices of cotton. Is the man or boy who can alway rely on him self at all times.
