The most pitiful object in any community is the narrow-guag ed man " who vaingloriously imagins that he is the whole thing and that the balance of the citizens must see all things from his point of view, and do as he savs do, anil let him boss the machine, or else he will have nothing to do with mat ters in which the community as a whole is interested. There are narrow-be tween-the-eyes men in almost every community, save this one. They may be rich or they may be poor, but in either instance a public spirited, town-improv ing scheme would rattle around in their brains like a mess of pot liquor in a hungry dog's belly. Such men are to be pitied rather than censured. Their complaint is a constitutional one, aggravated in a small de gree by the success and pros perity of their neighbors and business associates. In any community they can be set down as a minus factor in all measures calculated to uplift and elevate and broaden the peo ple, or to increase its import ance as a business center, or to make it more desirable as a place of residence. Were there no night, we could not appreci ate the sunshine ; were it not for sorrow and cares our joys would be negative pleasures: were it not for disease and pain ; we would not thank God for good health; were it not for town killers we would not sing the praises of the broad-minded business men and community builders. We are thankful for a few wet blankets in a town ; the}* make the enterprising men work harder to attain the success of; their ambition. DON'T FORGET to take a bottle of Dr. Worth ington's Remedy home with you. It is the best Pain Cure in the world and may save your life. No cure, no pay. Price 25c. at Hood & Grantham's. Saturday's Fire. On last Saturday about 1 :30 p. m. it was discovered that the Free Will Baptist church, the upper part of which was used by the Mason's as a lodge room, was on fire. The blaze was a very incipient one when discovered and could it have been reached, could have been easily extinguished ; but being on the roof of a two-story build ing and no fire department or water works available, the peo ple were forced to stand by and see the building destroyed. Fortunately the Mason's were in their Hall at the time and thus were enable to save all their furniture and rega'ia. The property of the church be low was also saved. The fire is thought to have originated from a small fire built in the Mason's Hall but a few minutes before the fire on the roof was discovered. 'Twas only by the heroic work of the citizens aided by the gallant efforts of the coun try people who happened to be in town, that neighboring resi dences of Messrs. P. C. Setszcr and V. L. Stephens were saved. Had they caught it is more than probable that the busi ness portion of the town would have been swept away. OPENING OP WINTER Tor JUST SEASON. The Southern Railway, which operates its own lines over the entire South and forms the im portant link in the great high way of travel between the North and South, Florida, Cuba, Mex ico, the Pacific Coast and Cen tral America, announces for the winter of 1901 and 1002 the most superb service ever offered. Its splendid regular service will • be augmented by the Southern Palm Limited, a magnificent Pullman train, which will be operated between New York and St. Augustiue, Florida. | A shew M. Pittmnn, On theniorning of the 19th of April, i»O2, the dark-winged Messenger again visited our town, and bore hence to its eternal reward the soul of Mr. Asberrv M. Pittman, sun of Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Pittman, and brother of Mrs. J. N\ Lane and Mr. J. P. Pittman, former ed itor of Tun BANNER. of our town, also brother of Mr. S. S Pittinan, of Richmond, \ a. At the time of his death, Mr. Pittman was in the forty-first year of his age. Eleven years . prior thereto he was married t> Miss Mamie Ford, of Warren ton, N. ('., who, with four small children, survive him. We cannot explain the mys teries of God's dealings; we cannot understand why the husband, father and friend has been called away at the very meridian of life and in the very zenith of manhood's strength ; we cannot, by words of sym pathy, dispel the dark shadows which have been made to gather around that home, and yet J through tin 1 rift of the cloud the ! bright ray of a silver lining ap peal's, as we are assured that early in life, our departed friend placed his trust wht>re confidence is not betrayed, and laid up his tr?a-ures where thieves may not despoil nor rust corode. For many years, Mr. Pittman had bien a devoted" member of the Missionary Baptist church. Quiet and unpretentious in ins nature, he yet preached the silent, but eloquent sermon of a Christian life. We, there fore, bid the loved ones who have been separated from him for a while, to "sorrow not a* those who have no hope;" he is not dead but has fallen asleep ill Him whom he trusted in life and whose rod and staff sup ported him through the dark vally. Card of Thanks. I desire to express through the columns of Tin-: PANNE N my sincere thanks to the good peo ple of Dunn f•»r their kindness and sympathy shown me during j the illness and death of mv :husband. While the shadows jof death have enshrouded my 1 home, and taken from me and I the little ones, him whom we loved, we have been comforted by the words of sympathy ex pressed, and the deeds of kind ness rendered, by so many kind friends. May the Lord in His abundant love and mercy, guide u> all safely o'er .ife's sea. and I the ties that are broken heie be J re-united in that City, where parting will be no more. Respectfully, MRS. MAMIE PITTMAN. DRESBMA KING. I am now ready to do any kind of sewing you may need upon short notice. You will find me on tlu* corner next to the Disciple church. Mrs. .1 no. L. Phillips. Mutual Admiration. One of the most pleasing in cidents of the President's visit to Charleston to North Oaro-' linians, was the strong attach- 1 ment the chief executive of the nation formed for our governor. It looked as if he was partial to Governor Aycoek on all oc casions. It'he was in speak-! ing distance of the Governor, J he was conversing with him. It the Governor was not in sight, the President would ask for him and make some pleas ing remark concerning him. It was the talk of Charleston how the President fell in love with North Carolina's Governor. It may be added that Governor Aycock too was greally im pressed with strenuous Teddy. —Charleston ♦ correspondent to Charlotte Observer. CARD OF THANKS. MR. EDITOR: Permit me through your col umns for myself and family to thank the good people of Dunn and surrounding country for the heroic and unselfish as-j sistance they gave us in saving our home from destruction during the recent lire. We can not hope to repay the debt of gratitude we owe, nor to ex press in words, the apprecia tion we feel. We can only as sure our friends that their kindness will never be forgotten and that they will ever carry I the best wishes ot our hearts. Sincerely yours, V. L. STEPHENS. WINTER EXCURSION RATES.
