C., Oct. l, too-2. Trusts. Every one knows that our people are opposed to trusts, and that nearly every State m the Union has upon its statute books laws that distinct j t e dare that no combination snail shall be formed for the purpose of controlling any article o trade or commerce, and the lie publican national platform de clares that if that party was elected it would destroy all mo nopolies. There may be some Mckinley Republicans here. If so. I want to call their attention to the fact that in his innaugura: speech he declared that if the present laws were not sufficient to prevent monopolies,he would ask Congress to enact others tot said he, "These huge combina tions, usually called trusts, are dangerous conspiracies against the people and should be abol ished. President Roosevelt is the President who says that trusts are good things and only re quire publicity in order to be ei fectually controlled. The Democratic party, said the speaker, places man above dollars and says it is wrong to shoot men as the Rapublicau partv is now doing in order that a few coal operatives may mine their coal at starvation prices. Our party has placed itself on the side of right, and there ii will remain.—Claude kitchin at Wilson. What has become of Marion Butler and Hal Ayer, two Pop ulist chairmen? We never hear them out crying for the ' dear people now." They 'nave gotten all they could out of the party and let them go. Butler is now an attorney of a syndi cate of capitalistsand is reputed to be almost a millionaire, while Ayer is a Wall stieet broker in New York. It was not the people they cared for, but the "pie." The Two Forties. When the Democratic State Convention met in 1898 the peo ple were confronted by ihe two records, one the record of the Democratic party, during its twenty-three years of ascendency prior to 1894, and the other the record of the Fusionists during the four succeeding years. In that campaign we had only t > point to those two records as object 'lessons and invite the people to compare and consider them. The confidence which we had from the beginning of the campaign in the result of the election of that year was predicated upon the conviction that the people of North Caro lina possessed sufficient intelli gence to distinguish between good government and bad gov ernment, and sufficient virture to prefer good government to bad government. —F. M. Sim mons at Greensboro. True. The Democratic party stands for a clean, upright-judiciary, for the protection and care of the unfortunate insane, for the education of the deaf dumb and blind of the State, for a longer school term than has ever been known in the history of the State, for the maintenance of the unfortunate and decrepid Confederate soldier, for the pro tection of tlie weak against the strong, for justice to all man kind.—J. M. Guder at Robbius ville. The Republican Campaign Text Book says: - "The Republican party has never been influenced by hys terical impulse, but has resisted that tendency in its own ranks. Probably the G. O. P. will call the lowa and Idaho declarations for tariff revision hysterical im pulses, and when they success fully smother the righteous de mand fortarill' revision within their own ranks, they will "point with pride" to that as another instance of successfully "resisting the tendency to hys terical impulse" in its own rank. A Runaway Match. x ——- "A Runaway Match" at the Opera House last Friday night was a side-splitter The mix ups were ludricous, and made everybody laugh whether they wanted to or not. You forgot your troubles and thought of nothing but how they would get straight. The specialties by the members of the company were all good and added a great deal to the amusement of those who attended. The next on the programme is a play entitled "Reaping the Harvest." which is highly spoken of by the press of the State. Abundance of wit and humor and a-sufficiency of sen timent and pathos, telling a story of the heart, all of which is the work of a finished writer, whose ambition is to please and never offend, will be presented next Tuesday night, Oct. Gth. Mrs. Fowler Dead. Mr. Thomas' Fowler died at her residence in Dunn last Sat urday night after an illness of several months. She had a complication of diseases and it had been evident for some time that she was fast nearing the end. She was a noble christian and had a sweet assurance of the hereafter. The interment took plac» Sunday at the Old Field ceme tery near her birth phtce, among many relatives and friends. She leaves several brothers and sisters to mourn her death. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones in their hour of sadness. Henry Huggius Dead. Henry Iluggins, the negro who was shot in Fayetteville some months ago by constable Goddard, while in the act ot' trying to escape, died Monday night at 8 o'clock. It will be re membered he was tried under a charge of robbery and bound over to court. He jjave bond and "leaked out." The coro ner summoned a jury and after examination decided that the shooting was justifiable. The school districts No. 1 and 2of this township have been consolidated. They are now building a large school house at Pleasant Union. SNOOKS. The mere fact that the Re publicans ami Populists are go ing to hold their Senatorial con vention here on the same day is conclusive evidence that they expect to work together in this campaign to defeat the Demo cratic nominee. This is too thin. They cannot fool the good people of this district any longer. NOTICE. I wish to announce that I have bought the stock of goods formerly owned by W. I).
