How Good Roads Reduce Distance and Increase Values. Two men were recently dis cussing the respective merits of their farms. Said oue, I am only three miles from the mar ket while you are five," "Yes," said the other, " hut my five miles lie along a level road over which my horses easily haul two tons, while you road i= hilly and rough and you would not think of putting more than a ton and a half on your wagon." Farmers are just beginning to realize that the distance they; are from market is measured in ! time not in miles: hence the movement in favor of good roads. The cost of getting a! product to town is borne by the i producer. A bushel of corn; has different values in differentl parts of the country and this j value is the value in the ulti-i mate market less the carrying charge. It will be easily seen then,! that any reduction in the cost! of marketing a product is to the advantage of the nation, for if the producer does not make the difference the consumer will. It should not be difficult to con vince the city man that he is directly interested in the con struction and the maintenance of good roads. If he can be convinced of this fact he will be willing to be taxed that road building may be carried on in every part of the county of which he is a resident. The value of land in remote sections would be incaeased 20 per cent, and in some ca«es ono hundred percent by cutting and filling and smoothing the roadway. CURES CANCER AND BLOOD POISON. Having Grown Up in the School Tliat Furnished Those Skilled Minds That Have Prepared Tariff Legislation, the Dur ham Man is Especially Fitted For the United States Senate. A Confederate Soldier and Author of the Pension Bill of 1885 Asks His Comrades and Their Sons to Support Gener al Carr. To the Editor of the Charlotte Observer: At this point of time we mu9t look men and motives squarely in ihe face. The careful reader of current history, the optimis tic observer of passing events, cannot shut his eyes to this fact that the ideals of expansion and centralization have lured us on like a will-o'-the-wisp un til the sovereignty of the states is overshadowed and the South ern's last hope in this highly favored land is threatened with extinction. We have been taught by ex perience the useful lesson that the love of power is inseparable from the ambition of man and whenever the vigilance of the people shall slumber under the sedative poison of misplaced confidence, their downfall may be reasonably ascribed to the triumph of selfish demagogues over a people who put their trust in the frailty of human virtue. We have had the evan gelizing ministry of "benevolent assimilation" in the Philippines until there is scarely a poor na tive to be tortued or massacred. We have had the "brotherhood of man," in Cuba until the ad vantage of reciprocal trade and commerce have had to yield to the cupidity of monopolists. We have had the anti-trust law with the power of government to en force its execution, and today capitalistic combinations are crushing to death thousands of poor in the sweat-shops and mines. We 'have a president asking a grant of power to deal without responsibility to the people -with monopolists and wage-earners to be placed in his hands. What a commentary upon the "government of the people, for the people by the people!" What a travesty up*n the civilization of "benevolent as similation !" Will constitution of the country warrant the des potic transfer of the highest ex ecutive power? Legislation, too, is differenti ating from former years. Sketch over tho situation all the gossa mer meshes of logical and po litical sagacity, it still looms to this, that the safety of the peo pie is menaced by the capitalis tic tendency of legislation in the United States Senate. We ought to have representatives in the United States Senate whose especial fitness and edu cation will enable them to grap ple with conditions; with the perplexing problems of indus try. It is idle to say that this or that lawyer is disciplined to such a task; we know the fact does not agree with the state ment. If a treaty is to be discussed in the Senate, it is the interna tional lawyer who can give the bast opinion; if some question in diplomacy, it is the man who has had experience in that business ; if the currency, it is the skilled financier who con sulted ; if a question of consti tutional precedent, it is the statesman whose equipment is thorough; if the tariff, trusts and social and commercial prob lem, it is the great master of industry aud economical re form. There are no private or individual reasons why I should support General Carr for the United States Senate. My in clination as a lawyer would be for a lawyer would be for some other candidate. For three successive terms one of the distinguished candi dates was my colleague on the judiciary committee. We were rival candidates'for the speaker ship when Col. Holt was elect ed ; we were and are friends. I am proud of that gentleman, of his integrity, his learning, his patriotism. The old State and her interests will be safe guarded as long as he lives. The State says of these gentle men as Cornelia said of her sons, "They are my jewels." I have in an humble way observed the trend of human events, of (Continued on fourth page.) Our Homes What we have said about the barns and cattle are more im portant about ourselves and households. The home should be comfortable. See that every pane of glass is in. No room is comfortable with a pane of glass out of the window. It is cheaper and better every way to keep the cold out than to warm I it when once let in. Look to the supply of fuel. Whether it be wood or coal, see that it is at hand. Carelessness along here causes much expos ure and suffering and often sickness. It is easy to work now. Colds do not pay. They sap the foundations of life. There will be bad day, cold day? and rainy days. Provide against these so that you will not be compelled to expose yourself when they come. See that the women are cared for. Is the kitchen comfortable for winter? Is the stove wood convenient ami plentiful. Very mauy of our wives and daugh ters suffer unnecessarily. It is the result of carelessness. But all the same they suffer when getting the morning meal in an open stove room or cooking with green and wet wood. We canuot go over the list of winter duties, but wish to say it is important that you make ar rangements for some good read ing. The happiness of your family will be greatly increased by having some good books at band. Your success next year may depend much upon your plans now. See where you have made and where you have lost. See what pays you to plaut. Cast up your accounts and see where you stand.—Southern Planter. A COLD WAVE. No. 49 Regularity in Advertising. The unanimous verdict of those merchants wh »iiave made great success iti their respective trades, is that advertising has been the foundation upon which thev built their business, and from it secured success. And the advertising which has brought this success has been of the regular and systematic kind And combined with this regu larity has been an attention and intelligence in directing the style of adverti-ini? which has given an added value to it. The value of publicity is to day, as an asset to the merch ant, but the publicity wanted is the advertisement which ap pears daily, not the kind which is seen for a few weeks and then disappears, leaving it a matter of investigation with the public whether the merchant is still in business or has gone away. Ihe merchant, every merch ant has an hour for opening, and usually one for closing his store, so that customers know when purchases can be made. There is a regularity in this daily opening, in the continu ous hours when gooils are to be shown the trade All this is a matter of professional business. Its regularity assures the trade which passes iliac the store is open. And yet merchant? who are thus regular in their store open ing, are too often spasmodic in their advestising. They regard a few weeks in the year as suffi cient to let the public know that they are in business. The re sult may not appear so directly in their own business, but what they lose by neglecting to ad vertise regularly, is easy to be noted in the building up of the rival merchant who is the per sistentjjjand regular newspaper advertiser.—Newbern Journal.
