Farmers, Hold
Your Cotton.
Mr. Editor:
With war clouds hanging
heavily over nearly the entire
civilized world, causing almost
complete demoralization of com
merce as well as serious "financial
cmbarassmehts the ' most stub
born problem that confronts
us
of the cotton belt is the profit
able disposition of this years
crop. -
Just now the buyers as well as
the growers are from present in
dications completely at sea as to
the proper method to persue.
There are and. will be any num
ber of plans and projects ' turned
loose on the general public, most
of which will prove, as I believe,
of no avaiL They may be all
right in principle but not feasible
or available Just at this time.
While I am not presuming to
act as adviser to -4he people gen
erally not being capable of that,
I will flay this: That I believe
irhere it is possible for him to do
' or that each individual farmer
should hold his own cotton in
: the seed, most planters are pre
pared to safely house all they
4jror and if not can easily get
-prepared.: This will certainly
hold the crop ofi the; market and
out off the hands of : speculators,
and I believe have a decided ten
dency toward strengthening the
market not only as to lint but
. the seed as well.
Let every grower that is pre
pared hold and let the stronger
help the week. Mark the pre
diction. Cotton is going up after
it leaves the grower's hands.
There was no more excuse for
cotton, taking such an abrupt fall
than for sugar taking such an
abrupt rise. As to the alleged
tightness of the money market
and the timidity of banks and in
dividuals in making loans it is no
aorc than we might have reason
Ably expected. After a storm
these is always a calm, and we
have had the storm . Yes a
storm of overtrodding at fictitious
prices, based credit; of debt and
bonds of every kind and class, of
high living and a general mania
for extravagance in every direc-
rThere is an end to all things
and the end of this wild cat finan
ciefing I believe, is close at hand.
It simply means that the world
18 waked up to the fact that its
. time , to settle up. Many of us if
WC settle at all will - have to re
sort to the popular practice, sell
bonds in time of peace and the
hond market is about as shaky as
tbe cotton market: c 1 j
In other words we will have to
find .. the; indebtedncc h.
money -to pay it and if it turns
put there is nobody to loan to us
n the Janguagc. of Flanagan of
Texas, "Where are we at?":
Biit all dangers are not : death
. d, to every cloud J see, a ailvey
lining and no doubt these diffi
culties and perhaps disasters into
which we have seemingly plunged
will be one .of our strongest as
sets in the future. Perhaps it
will teach us some hard lessons
we will not soon forget, teach
the importance of practicing
economy before we have to.
