We were struck some time since with the absurd boost of 4 GrerssUrro pprr or a Oreentboro correspondent, we do not rccaA which, that that town had aa- attmed a very city like appearance since the beautiful (hade trees on Elm street Dad been cat away to make room for nrw sidrwalki. The sidewalks, if they were food onea, were city like; the' de troctioa of the trees waa not city like, because, if it were possible, every city would retain them, or supply them, and nourish and protect them. That tbey do not hare them, that the streets present themselves "all shaven and shorn" is the result of conditions which are themselves misfortunes. Fires. Jcttkthg gas pities, waste cd jDsiarral substances hostile to Xtgetaiion, careless, malicious mischief. sometimes exigencies of business, combine to destroy or remove that which is not only the ornament, but might be the comfort of citizens and the protection of property. It is ridiculous affectation to commend the examples of cities which cannot help themselves to the imitation of towns which have at their power a certain degree of rurality, a delightful rut inurbt aspect, a blending of the town and country, the grateful shade in eon traat to the open glare, the song of birds mingled with the roar of business, the re freshing sense of rest and coolness so close to the bustle and beat of the open streets; and, as of material value, the stay to conflagration by the outspread . ing foliage of well grown trees. So fnr from cities advising the example of their condition, like the nx In the fable, after the loss of his tail, they would urge upon aH the towns able to grow and protect trees), the preservation of, and addition to, their chief ornament and use. Es pecially is this to be urged in southern towns where the summers are prolonged nd the beat and glurcof thesun unpleas ant. Many absurd vngaries of human fashions owe their origin to the physical defects or deformities of people in high rank, who adopt strange devices of dress to conceal what is unpleasant to the eye of others. What, in itself, may be riilku Ions or objectionable, becomes the la w be cause It has the anthority of the great or fashionable. iTpon this principle the compulsory nakedness of great cities is lauded, and commended to the Imitation of small towns, whose shade trees form their chief beauty and ' attraction, and tinea, tneir cuiei protection, ix't us rather commend the example of Raleigh, whose redundance of shade once entitled it to the nam of the City of Oiiksj of Augusta, with Us 6ne double rows of trees ia its broad streets which transform them into king forest avenues ; of Savan nah, withjits tret-lined streets and its al ternate squares densely shaded and grate ful resting places from the midday bluie of the southern sun; and of multitudes of ' many other places where taste and good sens combine to restore what nature suggests as essential, and which she had once provided, riant, protect and cher ish. Never remove or destroy, npon the principles of false fashion or imitation. MPM.EADINO IDEAS. Men arc a long time learning what is the essential principle of self-government. Uecausetbe people of the I Initcd States have pros)cred under a constitution and the liberty to choose their own rulers, the panacea for all bad government claimed to have been found. The conclus ion is leaped to that all people are 6tted U govern themselves, if only the bur- , den of old systems are removed ; and that all happiness and prosjierity is attained when the rules of public conduct art once set to paper. The New York Times quotes appositely in connection with results adverse to the above theory a remark of Curlvle thai "what is good for men is not necessarily gtod for monkeys;" and we may extend the idea by saying that "what is good for the Anglo Saxon is not ncccxsnrilv good for all other people." The French tried tlie experiment of a Republic, with all the horrible results oflkicnse, mistaken for liberty. The Spanish American colo nics, throwing off the royal yoke, adopted our forms, copied our constitution, and embarked on new national life with the fallacious idea that they could flourish in absolute inexiierieuce iu the training needed to make nations as well as indi- 5 vidnnls of self-respect ; and a more prcg nant example is that of Hnyti erectinj; the horrible travesty ofa Republic founded oa mussncre and ruin, the builders of the fabric liberated slaves, themselves de scended front mi inimcnioriul line tit ' slaves or savages. Such fabrics, liilivr ently false and vicious, exist iu discord and violence, and jicrish at last in an archy, or survive as tyrannical orleru cious despotisms. . "The sudden incorHiration of tlie slaves of the Southern SHates Into tlie body po title as "free and enlightened citiicns," with all the rights to make laws, iniKiic taxes and public policy, is scarcely less fraught with mischief to our Republic than the disastrous career of the blocks ia llayti have been to that swilled Re public And the peculiar and anomalous feature of such interpolation of incongrsv otss and dangerouselrmcnts with ourss tem Ulhattt Is altogether the work ofnieu whose ancestry bad the hardest training Is the srboul of liberty, men who knew hw slow the growth of liberty ... l. cava impeded at every stage by time MoctkMKxl oppression, rhiu.n might rejoice that the slave is freed ; com mon sense must bluah that the gift of freedom is supposed to do enough for tlie slave by a stroke of the pen what apt. of severe training wus found needed for the Anglo Saxon. We quote from tlie Times tlie following which marks the dawn of a sentiment which will in time find lively and bold expression: "Hayti is in every respect worse off than ft was a century ago, and it is re verting every year more nearly to the condition of an African tribe. The most formidable of our own political dangers st piesent is the growth of a Hayti in the Southern States. That danger has been averted heretofore by the avowed deter mination of tlie Southern whites to rule without reference to the blacks, whose legal right to take part in the Govern BKnt is as clear as their own." A SOLDIERS' HOME. The poor success of Col. Stewart, of Texas, in raising funds in New York for a Confederate Soldiers' Home in the Lone Star State seems to have had a most ex cellent effect down South in stirring up the pride of the people to help their own soldiers. Col. Stewart's zeal was no doubt admirable, but we have thought all along that it was somewhat misdi rected, - His mission was hailed with courtesy and good feeling by the great majority of the northern people but it gave occasion, to come of the malignants like the pious editor of the New York Mail and Express to renew their ex pressions of enmity towards the South. The Atlanta Constitution in an eloquent editorial calling upon Col. Stewart to comeback home has struck the right chord, giving timely utterance to a feel ing which was entertained by many who were restrained.from speaking merely by the reflection that it was none of their business. Out the Constitution has jus tified its boldness by calling on the peo ple of Georgia to build a Confederate home for themselves. The first day brought a response of $12,000. Here is an example -for the people of North Carolina. Our Legislature has pensioned our disabled veterans, but the pensions are fur from sufficient to keep some wasted by diseases contracted during the war from the hardships of abject poverty . The convention of disa bled pensioners assembled in Raleigh last Junuary authorized VY. H. Hamilton at Auburn, Wake county and J. II. Wheeler, of Wadcsboro, Anson county, to take tlie matter in hand and call uion the people to make a home for these helpless veter ans. These gentlemen have issued the cull and wait the response. Let it not lie said that they wait in vuin. Gen. R. R. Hemphill, editor, of tlie Ab beville Medium, in an editoriulagives an account of the maimer in which lien. Roger A. I'ryor, who is now predicting tlie Republicanism of the Southern Slates, lmpicned to relinquish his South ern citizenship,. "A hort time before the full of Petersburg be came to the picket line of McGo wmi's brigade find crossetl over, pretensivety to get news alniut tlie Yankees. He waved a newspaper at tlie Yuukec officer. Tliey met lietwccn the liiieh, conversed for some time. I'ryor locked arms with htm and walked in the lines of the enemy. He turned his Imek on old Virginia, his own State, and everything Southern. He left his people in the darkest hour in the face of the enemy, who hud their cannon trained on tlie city where he had left his wife. W know this to lie true, for the editor oftbe Medium wrote out for Gen. Lcc the full particulars of his desertion, as it was narrated by Lieut. Reeder, of Orr's Rifles, who wus in cominund of the part of the picket line where the desertion took place." hot. nam, one 01 tlie American com missioners to the Samonn conference, like the Hon. Eugene Schuyler and Murnt Hals tend, Is about to lie bereft ofhishon or by the ghost of printed things. He wrote an article for Scribnrr's sometime since upon the Samonn question, in which he charged the German government with insencerity and falsehood.
