SATIRDAY. MAY 25, 1H89. NCtiRO KDI CATION. The Charlotte ChrouieleantltlieStates villt Landmark, in commenting upon the declaration ol the Northern rresliyterinn General Assembly, that education is the true solution of the race problem, both express views to the effect that ex perience has not home out the truth ol the proposition. The Landmark declares that the smatterinK of education which the negroes have received is exactly what mukes the race question one of dif ficulty. The Chronicle declares that the negro has shown no improvement from his education since becoming a freeman. We cannot agree with either of these views. That "a little learning is a dan gerous thing" is a false proverb, livery jot or tittle of knowledge iu any human mind is a gain to civilization. It may he true that as a producer tliv negro is not what he was as a slave, hut the fact is not due to what little education he has gained since the war. Tlie complete change in the system of labor uml the general demoralization following the awl den emancipation of a densely ignorant race amply accounts for the discrepancy. Education will bring them back to and beyond their productiveness as slaves. If we do not hoie so and believe so mid strive towards thai, end the prosiiect lie- hire us is indeed a gloomy one. Th Southern Assembly has conceded the point in agreeing to co-o-ratioti with the Northern churclvin the work of edu cating the negroes. Neither docs our observation iustifv the Chronicle's assertion that the negro is not advancing- Improvement is most noticeable in apiearance, in manners, in conversation in morals. The aggress iveimiertiiienceor sullen insuliordimttion which characterized the race just after the war is giving way to sell-resiieetiiig courtesy and in many instances the dig nity of freemen. The privilege of learn ing undoubtedly had some effect in mak ing them contemptuous of the class ol work to which they must look, but they are rapidly learning that industrial pro ficiency is the better part of education Witness the report in yesterday morn ing'sCmzKNof theexhibits at the I lamp ton (Va.) Normal and Agricultural School for freedmen. Southerners should (eel both pride and interest in such schools us those. The race problem "will Ik with us as long as the negro. Us collisions and tlie realization of Its direst threatenings can be best avoided by the guiding torch of knowledge. DKATH OF HON.THOM. RI l'FIN The Orange county llillslioro Ob server gives information of the death of this very distinguished gentleman which occurred at his home on Thursday morn nig, the 2:ird hist. He has been long an invalid, with heulth sufficient however lor the lull exercise of his giant intellect Judge Ruflin wus not far 'from sixtv-tivv lie wns tlie son of tlie Chief Justice Thus. Ktifhii, a man whose legal fame was co extensive with the Iinglish shaking pro frssional world, and resembled his falhei largely in person, more so in mind and attainment. On the Is-nili it was hard to say to whom, in tin- balance of judge ment, the scales inclined, whether to the father or the son ; for very rarely baa ever liecn exhibited as it was in the younger nomas Kiittin such greatness of ipialities by inheritance. In depth ol learning perhups the father ex lied, iter haps, also, in judicial cast of mind. As an advocate and an orator (crimps the son was the superior.. In whatever he uudetook in his unites. sion Judge Kuftin, like his father, was great and successful. There was no pe riod ol Ins career when lie was nut chit nent, There was no 1m. v hood of proles sional life for him. He was lite mntnrcd lawyer, the profound jurist, the eloquent advocate from the lieginniug. Honors awaited hisevcry footstep. He was placed Uion tlie bench when his own interests ntigni nave well postHined the Matter ing confidence of his friends ; these would have fixed him for life to the Isnch. if that exalted station he honored so much hud not brougt to him with his tiililc and suflering frame a servitude as painful ns that of the galley slave, when he came bock for rent into the ranks of his nmti-a- - sion there to labor and fall at length ex hausted. He served throughout the war with great gallantry, attaining tlie rank of Lt. Colonel ol the UUh North Carolina, Gen. Scales' regiment. I.OOKINU TO AHMI.VII.I.IC.
