The promt class of passed midship- sneti oi in Annapolis Accadcmjr waich baa jtiat returned from a two year's cruise around the world, contains repre sentatives from five North Carolina dis tricts. All of these young men stand well, and will set commissions in the United States Nary next month. They . ft i' . I i r it mtv i a. ii. ocun, nepnew oi uovcrnor ocalrs, W. G. McMillan, Thos. Washing totj, A. J. Long and A. H. Davis, Their friends in North Carolina may be pre pared to bear some very interesting re ntals of travels from the Pyramids ol Egypt to the Siberian Coast. 1 have beard some of these stories charm ingly told, with alt the enthusiasm ol youth and natural gift of the average naval officer for spinning yams. These five compote one-eighth of the class, and hare upheld the honor of North Caro lina at the Naval Academy to an tin precedented degree. 1 am sorry to say, that all the candi dates from North Carolina, who reported for admission. May 15th, failed entirely, wito tne possible exception of young Mr. Wishart from Col. Rowland's district. His case is still under consideration by the Academic Board. These young men need not feel discouraged, for they will bt given another chance next September. The entrance examination was a very severe one, and less than twenty-live ol the fifty-five who reported, were suc cessful. Naval Cadet Ferguson, of Buncombe, stands very bigb, and after the examina tions which begins to-day, it he holds hi. own, will have a gold star placed on hi niform, thus becoming a star cadet, an honor that is very rare. Naval Cadet Jenkins of the second dis trict, is too much of an athlete mentally. tic nos Knocked out tne wnoie academy as a boxer, and is nitihcr of the has ball nine. He stands fairly well, however; M very popular, and bus through the consideration of hisCongressman, Kepre sentative Cheatham and the Academic Hoard been turned back for his third class year. This will insure bun a com mission in the navy. Cadets Mallison of the first district. and Flowers, of Col. CqwIcs' district, will, I hope, get throueh all riitht. A recent act of Congress which put Calculus in tne tnira class year this session, was the main trouble with Cadet Jenkins, ana a large numiier ol tnethirtlclussmen. la preparation for the academy a slight knowledge of geometry will not be amiss. as the average lesson In geometry after entering the academy, embraces fifteen to twenty propositions. This shows bow the naval cadet has to study to stand nign, There is a most interesting lady in Annapons, wno is reiHteato some ol your Ashcville readers. She is Mrs. Jnmes Iredell Waddcll, the widow of the gallant Captain oi the Mlienandotih, C. 8. N. This lady applied for a pension for service rendered by Cant. Waddcll, during the imhmp oiw hh justly entitled to H under the terms of the Mexican veteran act passed by Congress about two years ago. Commissioner Mack flatly refused to grant it. About two weeks ago, however, she received, to her great astonishment, a notification giving her back pay for two years and the pen ston for lite. This is greatly to the credit of Corporal Tanner, and speaks well mr tne fairness ot tnis administra tion, la Mrs. VYaddeU't parlor nanus a splendid nainting of the Shenandoah in the act of capturing eleven whaling ves sels ia the Arctic seas. Captain Waddcll really performed this feat and the paint ing was executed by an English artist soon after the event. At Mrs, Waddcll's death it will be bequeathed to the State of North Carolina and hum? in the State capitol at Raleigh. Capt. James Iredell . naddell was a double hrst cousin of Hon Alfred M. Waddcll, his mother having alst: Iwen a daughter of Judge Alfred Moore the first native North Carolinian who ever sat on the supreme court bem-h of the supreme court of the United States, Mrs. Waddcll ia a well preserved hand onw woman and tells many thrilling in- cidenta connected with her lilt ia t'aris and Uvcrpool while tbeShenanhoah was bring matte readr for ber adventurous career in the confederate navy. She was arrested and kept a prisoner in her fnth er's bouse in Annapolis after the capture of tne wnniiug vessels commemorated in the painting above referred to. It was eighteen months after the close of the war when she was released from an oath and a $10, (MK) bond not to write to her husband. This release cume when it was thought that Capt. Waddcll was oving in ungianti. it win ue rememiieretl that Capt. Wadikll surrendered to Great Britain alter be beard ol the defeat of the cunfrdrrary, thus raising a hitherto un known point in international law. His log book and pnjiers relating to his won- cieriui ei prints on the nigh seas while the Khrnandoah floated the flag of the Con federate States is still in possession of his WKiow, ana woum ue a most valuable tvlilittoa to the history of that ieriod if it rim Id be printed.
