News-Observer: Almost the wholecity was aroused on Sunday nifjht by a ter rific explosion. As officer J. H. Marshall was im; home about six o'clock p. m . he passed by the manhole on Wilmington street, at the intersection of Market. Noticing a very offensive odor which emanated from the manhole he concluded to stick a lighted match to the place and see if it would ignite. Hestruck a match and held it over one of the little holes in the iron cap to the manhole when in stantly there was a terrific explosion. The poisonous fjns had been ignited by the match and the explosion was the result. The iron cap was blown liijfh into the air and wuit whizzing by Mr. Marshall's head, knuckiii): oft his hat.
