Charleston, S. C, March I. Ths following was received from Columbia, this state. Monday night: Ths fo "l.ag against O. 8. Turner, ths wealthy factory owner of Spartanburg, who seduced his sister-in-law and mur dered hls, brotlier in law. Edward Hnger, has been increasing in bitterness ever since the tragedy, and culminated this afternooa in an attempt to lynch him. About noon a crowd of 4D0 men assem bled in the city, and openly avowed that they had come to take Turner out of jail and lynch hitn. An organized party of 20U men from North Carolina was ex pected, but did not come. Sheriff Not hols took prompt measures to def ?ad the jail and had it mads known to the oniwd that hs intended to protect his prisoner, whatever might be the consequences. A C.tsaea Bronchi On. The would bo Ivnehers thought ts make their onslaught mere effective by the use of a cannon. They rallied and parleyed and threatened, and Anally some of them went to the encampment grounds with a pair of mules and hauled thence a twelve-iiounder field piece. This they planted on Magnolia street, near its intersection with Main. At the foot of Magnolia street stands the jad about 400 feet from Main and facing it, fir Brar rollcemoa. The cannon had just been placed in position hen Mayor Henneman mount ed the gun. ordered the crowd to dis srse and dire, ted his police to clear the streets. This was done, and the crowd, then reduced to alsiut seventy fire, met the drawn revolvers of th Ave police men. On thr lirst effort of the police to remove the crowd from about the can non, some of the latter ma le ready to draw their pistol", hut daaisted and re. treated. A shot fired at an, time would surely have led to bloodshed. Th Caaim Mplkad. The firm. irsa and uoolne of the police prevented serious troubles. A policeman spiked the cannon, and several of ths mob rushed in to gain possession of the niece, but were driven otf by Sheriff Nichols and his posse, who had by this tune arrived on the sceue. The lynchers, lacking organisation and leader from the lirst, were bndly de moralised br the ridiculous failure of their attempt to isimlrJ the jail. They soon scattered, and the trouble was apparently over. Persons in the crowd wen- heard tn say that the lynch ers had retired only for better prepara tions; that they woald romo for Turner later, and would have him yet Mnr Troabl Kspoelod. The general belief is that ths danger of an attack on the jail is not great, yet sutKrient to justify measure of defense on the part of thesherilT. That olficer, wiih a po.sse of picked men, well armed, is now in the jail budding. He says he mean to defend the jail with h;s life, if necessary, and nobody who knows the man doubts his purpose. If the Jail be attacked there will he bloodshed. Gov ernor Richardson has telegraphed the sheriff to call on trie Spartanburg state troops, if ne- essary. ON TM RAMPAGE.
