ASHEVILLE DAILY CITIZEN: MONDAY EVENING, JANUARY 5, 1891. PARENTS' RESPONSIBILITY RKV. C. M. CAMPBELL'S HER. MOM YESTERDAY. Parents Responsible to God In Train I air Their Children Flnn ncM In Family oovenment a Necessity. , Rev. C. M. Campbell preached yester day morning at the North Aahevillc M. E. church, South, on "Parental responsi bility to God in training their children." His text was: 'And ye father, provoke not your children to wrath, but brinr them up in the nurture and admonition ot the Lord." Kphesians "This responsibility," said Mr. Cump bell, "is founded upon the supposi tion that the parents are pos sessed of the knowledge necessary to niiike the character ol the child what God would have it. Hence God speaks to the parents and says: 'Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.' The way the child should go is God's way. Take the word train to teach, to form bv practice. The ideu implies time, patience and much care. God sees the child through the parent and the only demand upon them is 'Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is rijjht.' Here is the first place wc urc to learn obedience, "Parents tire under obligation to pro vide a living tor their children, Revela tions sa s very little on this subject. Paul settles the whole matter in these words: ' But if any provide not for his own and specially for those of his own house he bath denied the faith and is worse than an infidel,' or heathen. Par ents are under obligation to educate their children. I use this word in the com mon acceptance as the development ol their intellects. Cultivate their emotions. Put such things into their hands as will refine, elevate and prepnre them for use fulness. As tar as possible keep the float ing trash that is damning so many of our young from drifting into their hands. "If you would retain the love and con fidence of your child make home happv. Not tine, not luxurious, but happy at any cost. Make home sacred. Only once does childhood and youth come. It is the parents' opportunity. Call your children around you and talk to them. Get down and prav with and for them, calling each by name. "All these ure lost without good gov ernment. A boy or girl who does not learn obedience at home never makes a good subject anywhere, in church or state. Goon government is not a multi plieity ot rules, for this is a failure. The fewest rules possible is the best. Let these l)e good and if firmly adhered to you will succeed. "Firmness in tamily government docs not mean severity or harshness. 'The rod and rcproot give wisdom, but a child lett to himselt bringeth his mother to shame.' This method of correction in some instances should be resorte I to, but always in love and never when we are out ot pntience or angry. 1 here must be union in the govern ment. The lather or mother must not (inestion nnv action of the other in nd ministering discipline, especially in the presence of the child. The child's way ol destroying the lirmness ot parental gov ernment is by crying until the parents yield ; persuasion upon the purt ot the child alter parents have rendered their decision ; tre(iient promises not to repeat an act that deserves to be punished for the first offence. Give your child to un derstand that no means no, and yes means it can or shall be done. Whip as little as possible and then only for diso bedience to a direct and known com mand. "My opinion is that the only way to correct prulanity, lying, stealing, drink ing and such sins is to fortify the mind against these by showing its evils, and begin your fortifying belore these evils begin the attack. May God help you to meet this the greatest of all responsibili ties." MAIL MATTER. Wlial an Collected and Deliver- eel the Iant Mouth.
