Jan. 22.t-In the senate this morning Mr. Al(Jrieb. said that the journal just read furnished a record without a parallel in the history of the senate. It disclosed the fact that it was blondined type ot Christianity, and the determined policy of the democratic senators to prevent any legislation or any action unless their wishes ns to cer tain measures should receive considera tion and be acceded to., Mr. Aldrich moved that the senate proceed to con sideration of the resolution to amend thc rules by the adoption- of a plan of closure. The following article is taken from Tuesday's New York World, and will be of interest to many of Tub Citizen's readers. Dr. Rankin was pnstur of the Central Methodist church, south, in this city, up to a few months ugo. The World says: "On a recent Sunday Rev. G. C. Ran kin, Methodist, of Kansas City, referred to a sermon of Rev. J. E. Roberts, Uni tarian, as 'musty utterances of that old rat eaten literature. Dr. Roberts was present, and it was thought by some of the congregation that he would wait outside and administer a thrashing to Dr. Rankin, but he didn't." AFTER A CHARTER. All- Asheville May Soon Have other Water Company. Notice has been given by Messrs. M. B. Carter and S. H. Reed, attorneys, that application will be made to the present legislature for a charter for a water com pany. The incorporators of the proposed company include Messrs, S. II. Reed, Ulas. McNnincc, K. Thereuiwn the vice president ruled that Mr. Aldnch's motion to proceed to consideration of the closure rule was in order nnd overrules Harris' point of order. Mr. Aldrich then moved to proceed to consideration of his resolution (closure.) Mr, Gorman moved to table it. The purpose of the Meeting Is to Unite the Agricultural and La bor Organization! to Secure Friendly Legislation. Washington, Jan. 22. A large number of Farmers' alliance delegates from Texas and Georgia are in Washington at tending the meeting of the National Par rs' alliance committee on confedera tion. There will be a meeting of the presi dents of the state alliances on the fourth of February, next, at this city. The delegates present at the meeting to-day represent the Knights of Labor, Farmers' national beneficial alliance, Fanners' alliance and industrial union and the colored Farmers' alliance. These national organizations will unite as the executive committee of the National con federated farmers' and laborers' or ganization. The general purpose of the meeting here is to carrry out the recommenda tion of the Ocala convention looking to the union of agricultural and labor or ganizations in pursuit ol the common subject of legislation, but it is distinctly stated by Chairman Terrell, of the ex ecutive committee, that no third party movement is contemplated. Strike on the Chicago and Erie. Chicago, Jan. 22. There is a strike on the Chicago and Erie railway. "We are completely tied up," said General Man ager Tucker, ol that road to day. it may last one day and it may lust a week. We will not accede to the de mnnds of the strikers." J. s. PH. Five new alliance senatorial candidates appeared in the field to-day. Some of them arc avowed candidates, while others are only talked of by friends. Most prominent among the latter number is ex-Governor lohn V. St. lohn, a prohibitionist. In an address last night before a larire audience he de clared himself in favor ol the object o( the farmer s alliance and severely criticised Mr. lngalls. Another candidate is Gen.C W. Blair, who fought on the union side during the war with great honor He is a democrat and is considered by many as a good compro mise candidate lor state treasurer and commissary general respectively. "THERE IS NO APPEAL." London, Jan. 22. Further advices re ceived in this city in regard to the weather on the continent are to the effect that heavy snow storms arc still prevailing throughout Belgium, and that the mails in Germany, France and Holland are ureatly delayed, owing to the interrup tion ot truttic, caused by the heavy tall ot snow. 100 KILLED. Real Estate Men's Convention. Roanokr, Va., Jan. 22. Two hundred real estate men met here yesterday to form a state real estate exchange. Every leading town in Virginia is represented. The grand jury has returned an indictment of mur der in the hrst degree against Judge 1. A, Warder, who shot bis son-in-law last Sunday. In the house at the conclusion ol the chaplain's prayer Mr. Rogers, of Arkansas, raised the point of order that there was no quorum pres ent. After a few minutes delay the spcuker counted 168 mcmliers and directed the clerk to read the journal. While the clerk was engaged in that duty Mr. Enlor questioned the correctness ol the speak' er s count. The Speaker: "The chair overrules the suggestion and the clerk will proceed. Representative Langston has introduced in the house a bill appropriating $1,000,000 for the es tablishment of a university in any state in the union, where unappropriated pub lic lands may be loinid, tor the education of the colored youth of the country. Four Kansas Banks Fall. Atchinson, Kns., Jan. 22. The Caw- kcr City State bank has failed and is in the hands of a receiver. Liabilities and assets cannot be ascertained.
