Tnc Price of Commodities) Ciolna; lip The South Feels) the Decline In Cotton-Rice Firm. New York. March 7. R. G. Dunn & Co.'s weekly review of trade says Congress has adjourned, and the pos sibility of an extra legislative scs- 1 no longer hangs over busi ness t3 that the monetary losses cannot now be affected by any law making earlier than December next, nor is there much prospect nov mat any serious change will be mode next winter. Meanwnne, appropriations tuicu nave been so large and liberal that the treas ury surolus must be considerably re duced, and the available supply of cur rency increased within the current year. One of the unwholesome factors is that prices of commodities are moving up ward, the average having risen more than 1 oer cent, during the last week and exports of merchandise are thus liable to lie restricted. Reports of trade trom all parts of the country show bat little changes in the Inst week, though there is eriiaps a nine less activity forawhile. The South fcelsa continued decline in cotton, but the trade in that section is moderately fair. Kicc is firm at New Orleans, while molasses is strong and sugar dull. At Pittsburg the coke strike stiffens prices on structural iron and window glass is weak. Chicago reports an extraordinary decrease in the dressed beef receipts mid a heavy fall ol the receipts in grain, lard anil hides, but a large gain is incurred in meats and wool. MR. LOWRV8 EFFORT. It laaalfl to Have Been Realist Fine Mr. Reed'H Record. Kai.p.irh, March 6. This hns been n wonderful day in our legislature. Mr. Hiwry, of Buncombe, made the speech ol his life. The question was an amendment ol the constitution in regard to the home stead, lie was eloquent, logical and pa- lictic. Some of his flights were erauil. lie kept the house for an hour io tears or laughter. Old men say they never saw sucscbeering and such wild enthu siasm. The ladies in the galleries waved their handkerchiefs, while ull present were held as il by magic. He predicted the yrainl career of the democratic party and showed how deep the republican were buried. It was a memorable time, Kced, bis colleague, walked the floor behind the chair of the sneaker, now and then going to his seat, looking all aglow with astonishment. The coulusion at the cK.se was pro found. Members, friends, one and all rushed to congratulate the rising states man ol the west. His eloquence and flights in the memorable speech nomi nating Gov. Vance for senator apgiear as the work of an ordinary mau as com pared to this effort. Our other member, Mr. Kced, is a quiet thoughtful man of few words. He is prized for his good hard business sense. No member of the house is more popular than he and no one more highly appre- mted. "G." HE KILLED HIMSELF. Anything; Rather Than Be cap tured II y the Rnaalan Police. St. Petersburg, March 7. Dcgarjcff, the nihilist leader and murderer of the chief of the secret police in 1HH3, hns been arrested at Kostroma. A numlier ol other arrests have been made. To Succeed Mr. call. Tallahassee, Fla., March (5. Gov. CANADIAN ELECTIONS. The Government's Majorltv Re duced bv the Lateat Returna. Toronto, Out., March 7. There is still considerable diversity of opinion as to the actual majority the government ob tained in the recent elections. The Em pire, (conservative,) says: ' "More complete returns show that ihe conservative victory of Thursday was even of a more sweeping character than was anticipated yesterday. Our returns show a present government majority ol 45, a mugnilicent endorsement and one of which every loyal man may well be proud." The Mail, independent, places the gov ernment minority at 2i) with Cariboo, Aigoma and Huntingdon to hear trom The World, conservative, places the irov- crnment majority at 35, while 27 is the most the Ulobe, liberal, can make it Impartial authorities place the govern ment majority at about 30. the lollowing despatch has been re ceived from Wilfned I.aunerby the Globe: "The results of the general elections are still too uncertain to venture a definite opinion on. One thing, however, is made nut beyond doubt, that the policy of the government is doomed. Its fate is al ready sealed in so far as Ontario and Oueliec are concerned. Ixl, therefore, the liliernls continue to fight everywhere bravely and cheerfully." THEY'RE FoR PARNELL. SS..130 RalHed For HI ill In u Few Houra By a Newspaper, Dl'HLiN, March 7. Further on.tlie paper characterizes the object of Mr. Cornell's appeal to the United Mates as not liemg lor the aid of evicted tenants, but to bring grist to the l'nrnellitc mill. It is the intention of the McCnrthyites to use the new paper in pushing their campaign against 1'arnell, which com mences in real earnest to-morrow. 1 lie freeman's Journal to-day published the first list of I'arnell's leadership fund, in the total showing of a subscription in one day of .'.li.itl, and points with pride to this response made in a few hours by its subscri tiers.
