The t'anal Result When an itiHane Asylum Takes Fire The Saved Inmates Huddled Together In Outhousea. Nashville, March 14. The beautiful Central insane asylum seven miles from this city is almost a mass of ruins, and beneath it are the charred bodies of half a dozen inmates. In the out houses near by are huddled the poor demented crent utes who found an asylum in the struc ture now laid in ashes. At 10:15 last night a tongue of flume broke through the roof on the western main wing. An alarm was given and tour hundred inmates of the institution were thrown into wild commotion. Twenty-eight men were in the wing when the fire caught and twenty-two of thera were quickly removed to the main hall. The other six were left to their fate behind the impassable wall of fjame. The lost is heavy, but the building was insured. IT'S FIRST FORM. How the Improvement Bill Went to RalelKh. From a correspondent at Raleigh The Citizen has learned a few facts concern ing the mnnner in which the much-discussed appropriations bill was passed. The bill as it was finally passed by the legislature, differs vitally from the form in which it was first introduced. City Attorney Cobb, after consultation with a number of citizens at a meeting called lor that purpose, went to Raleigh and mul the bill introduced in the house. As the bill read then it gave the board of aldermen of Asheville absolute authority to issue bonds to the nmouiit of $.11)0,- 000 for the improvement of the citv's streets. Had it passed that wav, the people of Asheville would not have been allowed to vote on the proposition at all. The bill wns relerrcd to the house com mittee on corporations, to be reported on. Kepresentntive Mark Kced, in the committee room, in the presence of Muvu. Blanton, who had been tele graphed for, Mr. Cobb and several others, declared that it was an injustice to the voters ot Asheville to allow the bill to pass in its original shape. After that it was considered advisable to change the bill, allowing the voters a chance to say at the polls whether or not they desired to have the city im proved. That change was made, and in that shape it was passed. A GOOD I DIC A. Mr. A Mlt Will Bring- His Mineral Water Into the city. B. J. Armstrong, who lives in Chunn's cove, about two miles east of Asheville, received permision from the hoard of aldermen last night to lay a line of pipes from his house across the mountain and through one of the streets to a point near Court place. His object is to bring water from his spring to the city and keep the water on sale. The spring furnishes an excellent chalyb eate water, which has been much sought for by visitors to the city. The experi ment will, no doubt, be a paying one. Mr. Armstrong has contracted with J. W. Garrett, of Spartanburg, for the con struction ot the line. The power is to be furnished by a Garrett hydraulic motor, of which Mr. Garrett is the inventor. Work is to be begun very soon, and will be pushed to completion. CHURCH NOTICES. A WHOLESALE LYNCHING TERRIBLE TIME IN THE STREETS OF NEW ORLEANS, The Sicilian AaMaaalns Found Not Oullty by the Jury aud the En. fined People so to the Jail and Hansj and Shoot the Murderers, New Orleans, March 14. In the Hen. nessey case yesterday afternoon the jury rendered the following verdict as to those charged with being guilty of mur dering Chief of Police Hennessey: Mis trial as to Holizzo. Not guilty as to Macheca, Marchesi, Baguette, Marchesi, the boy, Cardoni and Matrunga. The afternoon papers got out extras, spreading the news of the mis-trial far and wide. Intense excitement was thereby created and as if by one impulse the people began to flock to the square around the Clay statue. There speeches were made by several persons indig nantly criticising the finding of the jury. As the shaking proceeded there were cries of "Lynch them!" and when the meeting adjourned it was to go to the Parish prison, which was soon sur rounded by several thousand people. The doors were forced open and six of the Sicilian assassins were either shot or hanged. The killed are: Manuel Pallet, Pietro Monastorio, Antonio Scaffcdi, Jos. P. Macheca, Antonio Marchesi and Anto nio Bagnetti. The excitement is at fever heat in the city and the streets are thronged with people discussing the lynching and the finding of the jury.
