C EM SHOT LUTHER TWICE I.ITTI.K DISPUTE AND HOW IT ENDED, Cripple Creek, the Cesspool or Crime, Furnishes Another Case for the Courts A Dusky Damsel With Blood In Her Eye. Cripple Creek does not propose to let the decent portion of Asheville forget that pestiferous burg. There was a little shooting matinee wn there yesterday afternoon, and the result is one badly wounded man and another inmate in Sheriff Reynolds' bus tile. Monday was "sugar day" for the rail road boys, and as is the usual castnm, several of the colored men took a few days off in which to spend the lucre men was hurnine their Dockets. One of these was Luther Sherrill, who employed in (.ant. Aderholt's souad of material train men. Luther went down to Cripple Creek yesterday to while away the dull hours with some friends who inhabit that unhallowed precinct. One ol these was Lena Adams. Lena is an exceedingly dusky damsel, ith u reputation for the careless manip ulation of the triggers of a gun. Lena was in a pad humor yesterday hen Luther accosted her. and replied to is pleasantries in a style that his proud spirit could not submit to. Various uncomplimentary expressions passed lietwccti them, when Lina picked ) a rocg aniitnrcw it with all her might ; Luther. The rock struck him on the head and brought blood. lie started toward the infuriated dam- when she nulled out a danuerous oking 3X-caliber pistol and began firing t Luther. She fired three times. One shot missed him, another struck him in the left groin, and the third grazed the in on ins leu side and Iodized in his oat pocket. Luther then wrenched the pistol from lie woman, and fimliiiur that it would not fire, threw it at her. Hut she was not hurt. Sherrill was then taken to the house a womau friend near by. and Dr. II. L. Uaird summoned, who did all he could relieve the suffering of the wounded man. 1 he wound is a dangerous one, but Sherrill may pull through. umcer McDowell arrested Lena Adams ithin a few minutes after the shootine. She wus confined in the lockup until thin morning, when she was removed to the ounty jail, where she will be held to await the result of Sherrill 's injuries. i ne woman is a tre'iuent visitor to the police court, and is snid to have been en gaged in at least hall a dozen shooting urnys in cripple Creek. HANDSOME HOTEL. Kenllworth inu Relnsr Rapidly Completed. The Kcnilworlh Inn is now in an ad vanced state of construction. The frame and stone work are almost entirely com pleted with the exception of the tower at the southeastern corner of the build ing, and the covered carriage entrance in front. Painters are at work and the plasterers have bad sway in their de partment for some time, and as a result large number ol the rooms have been plastered. Hie dnvewnv from the Swannnnon river to the hotel, previously described i he citizen, is being rapidly con structed. This approach will have its origin nt the river drive and a few hun dred yards above the iron bridce at Biltmore. I-rom there it takes a pictur esque and circuitous route through the mils and woods to the building. The road is being macadamized and will. when completed, make the Kenilworth one of the tnoBt accessible points of inter est in the vicinity of Asheville. The hotel itself is a mammoth affair. Built as it is on a magnificent eminence, itn its eight story front, it presents a most impssing appearance. The build ing is a decided addition to the hotels ol Asheville and is well worth a visit. TO SHOOT TO-MORKOV7, The Pigeon shoot at the Old Fair Ground at a O'clock. Frank S. Mead, of Knoxville, tliccham pion amateur shot of the south, is in the ty. The pigeon shoot between Mr. Mead and Mr. Lorillard for a purse of $'.'00, will take place at the grounds of the Asheville gun club, near the passenger depot, to-morrow at 2 o'clock. Sonic difficulty has been experienced in procuring the birds. Two hundred live pigeons were wanted, but to-day only oO had lieen secured. Of these Mr. Mend sent 110 from Knoxville. It it not probable, however, that this lack of pigeons will interfere in any way with the contest. Sportsmen are taking a great deal of interest in the match and there will doubtless be a targe crowd at the club grounds when the contest takes place, THE NEW HOTEL. Stock all Taken and Work to Be gin within a Month. The big hotel of the Asheville Park and hotel company will soon be begun. The Inst $25,000 of the stock of the company has been sold to a northern man, and the financial matters having thus been settled, work is to be begun on the building as soon as possible. That will lie within the next thirty days. The contract lor the construction of the hotel hns not yet been awarded, but this will be done within two weeks, There are a number of bidders for the contract, among them the Plank hotel system company, of Chicago. Pastor Pounded. The members of the North Asheville Methodist church, South, pounded their pastor, Rev. C. M. Campbell, last night, A targe number of his flock were present bringing everything needed in the way of nousenoia supplies. A very enjoyaoleeven ing was spent by all those who partici pated in thus showing their appreciation of the efforts of their popular pastor. Young: Men's Meeting To-Nlght. Mr. R. V. Chicago is in the grasp of tbe grip. The disease stems to be more prevalent tban it was any time last year. It strikes all classes of society. It is felt in every line of business. In one store employing 160 clerks, forty are sick. Ten per cent, of the police is laid up, and fifty men in the fire department are off. Fifty out of cue loll mail carriers in the postomce are suffering. All of tbe hospitals are over crowded. There is scarcely a boarding house in the city, it is said, but has from one to five persons laid up with the dis ease. It has invaded the hotels, and fully one-third ot the guests are ill. To make matters worse for them, many of the managers and hotel employes are also sufferers, and there is such a dearth of help that some of the guests, by their own request, have been sent to the hos pitals. THE APPROPRIATIONS. There Amount as Estimated By Republicans. Washincton, March 11). Chicago, III., March 19, A private ublegram from a well-informed officer of the Italian navy received by L'ttalia and ated at Spezzia, where the chief navy yard of Ituly is located, says: Current rumors are that secret in structions have been dispatched from Home to the admiral commanding the squadron in the Mediterranean at this port, in view of the recent turn of affairs America." Another dispatch from a private source from Rome, just received here, says that secret session was held between the minister of marine and the chiefs of the general staff of the Italian admiralty.
