To the Cit incus of Aslieville: Kcferring to the announcement made n last evening's Citizen and Jonni.il that my nflme has been promised for mayor upon an independent ticket, beg to submit thr following: First I am willing to apjienr before he Community aa a people's candidate, irrespective of party, but cannot he hound by the published resolutions ac- compaaymg my nomination, Second With reference t: the improve ment Act, which ia the leading issue in this election, while I regard it as faulty in sonic icsprcts, yet 1 lielieve it to he farlicttiT than n general tax for street miiroveiiients. provided the Act is ad- miiiistiied hv an honest and efficient hoanl of officer. Third I have no political or partisan aspirations whatever, but deem it the luty ol every citizen in matters id public ntercst and importance to waive per sonal preferences and lie governed by what appears to be the best for the whole com muni t v. I bee to appear, therefore, as the rep resentative of no partisan interest, hut as a citi7.cn concerned solely in the devel opment of the real and commercial pros- fierity ol Asheville, under an honest, business-like municipal government. I'ourth With the understanding that my viewsareasexpressed herein, I accept the nomination and, if elected, shall do verythuig in mv power to secure an honest, fair and economical administra tion of the city government, . 7 . Collins. Asheville, April 1 1. From MeHHrH. Htnrnea and Rey nolds, Bnivim Tub Citizen; We notice in vour issue of yesterday the announce ment of a ticket in opposition to that nominated by t lie democratic prinuirv. e lullv recognize the naht ot the orig inators of the opposition to name and support their men. ' As to ourselves we shall be glnd to have as manv votes as the good people ol Asheville may wish to cast for us. Hut we arc the reuular nominees ot the democratic primary and will unfiinch ngly support the ticket named in that primarv. I ruly, etc., . t . Stamen. W. T. Rcyuolth. THli i-HintKv, What It Means and What IIh Re- aulta Ouirht lo Be. Kditok Tub Citizkn: Noting in your issue of (Ith inst. a combination ticket following the primary), in which the names of parties voted for in primary for aldermen, are associated with Mr Collins for mayor, 1 beg to dissent to any such arrangement as this, and ex press nn opinion at against the appro priateness or suitability of such a ticket being put out and voted for. The primary' election nst over was actively participated in only by demo crats. Members of this party only were allowed to vote in this election. The democratic nominees before this primary for mayor were Messrs. C. b Blnnton and ,W. B. Gwyn, each asso dating with them on their tickets four democrats to lie voted for as aldermen The primary, therefore, was the means of presenting to the people of Ashevilh through the democratic party niachin cry a democratic ticket to be voted for in the coming municipal election. This being the case, will it be appropriate or admissahle for the democratic nominees tor aldermen before this primary to give anv aid, comfort or encouragement to Mr, Collins as a republican asking lo lie elected mavor of the citv of Asheville ? If such a ticket is run with the consent and approval of the democratic noiui nees tor aldermen on it, docs not this absolve all participant in the primary who are disappointed in the result of the primary, Irom i-nv lenity or allegiance to the results ol the primary.' It would be just as proper and the po sition tie just as tenable in politics, for Mr. Illnnlon to give his mllucnce to the election of two other aldermen than those nominated bv the primarv, as it is for the democratic nominees for alder men to give their influence and encour agement to the election nf Mr. Collins as mavor, and they will certainly give to Mr. Lollins aid and comtort if they al low themselves to be put on his ticket. The results ol the primary election, if accepted at all, must be accepted as a whole, and not in part, or as individ uals think proper; il this is done the whole object ol the rleetion is defeated and is made inoperative and of no force or enect. In the primary just past about one thousand democrats participated. Act ing under the authority and direction of the :ity democratic committee the elec tion was held, and under every consider ation of honor and of principle the demo crats that participated in this election are hound bv the result. I he voters in this election will fail in their duty, and the democratic committee will tail in its duty, if in their respective capacity as voters and committee, they do not use every menus and endeavor to elect the whole ticket as presented for their Totes bv the decision of the primarv. If Mr. Collins, by his affiliations, for feits the confidence and esteem of those who would see Asheville governed by other than obstructionists and negroes, this is Mr. Lollins own annir, and until he puts himscii in ac cord with those who properlv appreciate what the public needs of the place are and aieof sufficient intelligence and good character to bring about these needlul public bench ts, then and not until then should he receive consideration and political preferment at the hands of dem ocratic voters. Let Mr. Collins get his political advancement and honors from where he expects to get his votes, the negroes and the enemies of good govern ment, the republican party. A Voter for Gvrjra.
