DlairuatlnK and Degrading HlKhta
at the Execution of Two French
men Accenaories) to Murder A
Desperate (struggle.
Paris July 25. Horrible cenei hare
been witnessed during the past week on
and about the Place de la Koquette, the
pliice where criminals are beheaded by
the guillotine. Crowds of the lowest of
the low have assembled there every even
ing and have passed the night eagerly
waiting to witness the beheading of the
murderess Berland and her accomplice
Do re. On Saturday morning, as al
ready cabled, a large crowd gathered
about the place dc la Roquette in expec
tation of seeing these criminals beheaded,
but the ghastly work was postponed on
account of the marriage of execu
tioner Daibler's son and assistant to the
daughter of a provincial executioner.
Since that time, Sunday morning ex
cepted, the voyous and their consorts, as
well as a certain numlier of people of a
letter class, have gathered each morninc
about the prison and thecxecution place,
singing, shouting, fighting, and usin ob
scene and profane language. This morn
ing the crowds were more riotous and
otherwise offensive than usual. Thejcon-sequem-e
was that the police were com-
lielled to chaige the crowds, making
many arrests and somewhat clearinu the
air of the neighborhood.
I he uargotes, cafes ami other public
resorts of the nciuhborhood have throuch-
outthe week been doing a booming busi
ness as a result ol this bloodthirsty ex
pectancy, and when the police had
charged and cleared the streets tl'ey had
another and quite as lively a task in
clearing out the most disorderly of these
Irinkinc places. Here, acain, many ar
rests were made, and drunken men and
drink-sodileu women, yelling and hght
inir, were escorted to the police stations,
soiling the very air through which thry
pnssen bv the horrible language with
winch they profaned it.
I aris, uly 2.1. I he execution ol
young Itcrluud and I lore, two accom
plices in what is known as the Courlx
vnic murder, took plnce this morning on
the Place De La Koquette. Unkind
walked calmlv to the guillotine, but n
desperate struggle took place on the
scaffold. Finally the executioners suc
ceed in forcing him down upon the
bascule and from there slid his head un
der the knife. Dorc did not make nm
resistance.
The execution of the two men occupied
only eight minutes. Thousands of siec-
tators, mostly ol a depraved class, wit
nessed the horrible scene and six hundred
soldiers had bard work to keep order.
No sooner had Berland s head rolled
into the basket than the crowd with a
combined mighty rush broke through the
cordon ot troops and police and rushing
up to the scaltold, gloated over the
blood-stained machinery of execution.

CLEVELAND'S LINE FENCE.
He Has None and Therefore Can't
be Quarrelled With.
Sandwich, Mass., July 27. The recep
tion to ex-president Cleveland lusted till
nearly 1 o'clock, when the assembly ad
journed to the casino, where a banquet
was served. When Cleveland entered
and took his sent on the stage he was
given a great ovation, ludics waving
handkerchiefs and gentlemen cheering.
Three cheers were given for the "next
President."
As Cleveland rose to address the as
sembly he was greeted with continuous
applause and cheers. When the enthu
siasm bad subsided Mr. Cleveland re
plied to the toast, "Our neighbor."
In introducing his remarks Mr. Cleve
land said : "I suppose that when you
greet me as vour neighbor today, you
nave in mind that 1 have come among
you to spend at least a large part of each
year, and that I intend to maintain this
sort of residence here as long as the ex-
pence ot farming and fishing enables me
from my slender purse to meet your rate
of tax and cost of provisions. In the
meantime, 1 declare my intention to be a
good neighbor. No quarrels can arise
over my fine fences, for I have nunc."
Mr. Cleveland went on and made a
truly neighborly speech. He said :
we can be tolerant to one another.
We can constantly test our political be
liefs by the light of patriotism and good
citizenship. We can be brave enough
and honest enough to follow where they
lend. We shall thus elevate our political
effort and find incentives to activitv in
determination to doso, and in making our
couutry as great as it ought to be, and
in securing to ourselves ami our fellow
citizens, thnt happiness and prosperity
due all of us under a free government by
the people.
bpeakmg of the high honors he had
enjoyed and of his presidential career
Mr. Cleveland facetiously said: "Of
course the subject would be relieved of
all uncertainly and embarrassment if
every president were to die at the end of
his term. 1 Ins noes not seem, However,
to meet the views of those who, under
such an arrangement, would be called
upon to do the dying, and so some of
them continue to live and thus perpetu
ate the perplexity of those who burden
themselves with plans for their utiliza
tion of disposition.
Mr. Cleveland's remarks were hnppy
and appropriate throughout and were
frequently applauded, and as he closed
there was another outburst of applause.
uov. Kussell was then introduced

San Francisco., Cat., July 27. Ad
vices just received from China give par
ticulars of fresh depredations by the
Chinese against missionaries.
The latest attack was made at Yan
kas, on June 29th, when the Catholic
mission was methodically looted, the
crowd of Chinese passing things from
hand to hand in a chain. The buildings
were alterwards set on fire. A few days
previous four chaels were destroyed in
Kiangsi, near the city of Puchow.
The chapel, school and residence of a
priest were looted and burned on June
26. On the same day some predatory
bands completely destroyed the French
orphanage at a place called Haimen. In
addition to the destruction of this or
phanage, eight or nine of the wretched
little children cared for in the building
were carried off.
A correspondent writes to the China
Mail that there is a rumor in Canton
that a disturbance has taken place in
I'Ukin.'in province. It is said the rebels
are several thousand strong and have
captured a city. The intelligent Chinese,
lie adds, think It will be difficult for for

UOINS AT KENIL WORTH INN.
The Wlldon Fire Eftcape to be
Publicly Tented Tomorrow.
Those who have not already witnessed
the interesting and severe tests which
the Wilson fire escape is having imposed
upon it bv the proprietors of Kenilworth
Inn, wouid be well repaid for their visit,
to see that nlone.
Dr. Browning says that Mr. Seldon.
who is giving personal attention to the
setting up of this novel fire escape in
every room in Kenilworth Inn, has
proven its wonderful efficiency by first
throwing himself from the window, fol
lowed by male and female employees of
the new Inn, all alighting gracefully on
terra firma, with intervals of a few sec
onds each.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, afternoon at
5:30, a series of tests will be made from
the top floors. Mr. Seldon, first illustra
ting the method of workinir the fire es
cape, then in rapid succession, dropping
a number of employees from the window
of the uppermost bedroom floor.
Music by the loveliest orchestra in the
United States will add greatly to the at
traction.
The public is assured bv the manager
that, although the most unusual precau
tions have been taken against fire at the
Kenilworth Inn, a thoroughly reliable
and efficient fire escape affords the same
style of comfort to the guests that a
mouldy insurance policv does to the own
ers of the hotel.

Ont the Injured.
Paris, July 27. Late reports sny 200
people were either killed or injured by
a collision yesterday at St. Marde.
It was a most terrible affair. The
engine of one of two excursion trains
telescoped three carriages loaded with
excursionists, and at the same time a
reservoir of gas on the damaged train
exploded and set fire to the wreckage.
Scores of people were pinioned down,
wounded and helpless, beneath the
rains.
Three carriages were in a very short
time in flames which spread to such an
extent that numbers of the wounded
were slowing roasted to death before
they were reached by those who were
doing their utmost to rescue them.
Many of the unfortunate people im
prisoned beneath the wreck were
drowned while partly roasted, by the
firemen who were summoned to the
scene and after a delav of forty minuti s
poured in such torrents of water that
they drowned many ersons.
