The latest .Trial dis aster is reported Ironi Macerata, capital of the Itwi province of the same name, about twenty miles south of Aniona. Macerata is situated on nn eminence above the Potcnza a small river emptying into the Adriatic, and is midway bet ween the Appcnines and that sea. The peasantry and others of the neigh borhood gathered in large numbers yes terday to witness the exploits of a dar iug balloonist who had acquired tariie bv frequent previous anil successful ascents. All went well at the commencement of the exhibit. The balloon ascended amid much applause and enthusiasm, swept grandly towards the blue waters of the Adriatic. It was not the intention of the .crouaiit to he carried out to sea so he atlc iiptcil to descend and was seen to be vigorously pulling at the exhaust of the safety valve. The rope of the latter did not seem to work proierly und the balloon nnd its occupnut were slowly but steadily carried seaward. Finally the balloon was seen hoveringover the Adri atic. A cry of horror arose from the crowds who hail followed the course ot the balloon and suddenly the aeronaut was seen to fall headlong from the car and after whirling over and over twice or thrice in the air, dropied into the sea and was drewned belore some fisherman who had put out lo rescue him had time to reach the unfortunate man. One of the at tract ions at Coney Island Saturday was a balloon ascension by Miss Annie Ilar kass, whose home is in Terre Haute, Ind. At an elevation of ."inn feci the parachute was let go and slow ly began to unfold. Suddenly the parachute closed, nnd with its human Ircight fell with (rightful ve locity. The silence was broken by the shrieks ol fainting womeiiandof children wailing and crying, and men turned away their faces to shut out the awful sight. Faster and faster descended the parachute. A fire in the business portion of Nor folk, Va., which started Saturdav after noon, destroyed oyer a quarter of a mil lion dollars north of property. The fire originated in the warehouse of the Nor ilk Storage company, at Church and 9'atcr streets and burned down Water street to within a few doors of Market square.
