Kar- NeKlecl of the Architects Reaulta In a Terrible Traicedy In Mew York Saturday I'pwardH of a Muudrt d Killed. Nnw York, Aug. 2. Thecollapse Sat urday afternoon of four five-story stores, 68, 70; 72 and 74 Park place was in stantly followed by fire. The four stores were all occupied, and it now seems probable that more than a hundred lives were lost. There is a con siderahle difference of opinion jas to the cause of the disaster. It seems probable that the weight of the printing presses, which were on the upper floors, together with the vibration caused by their mo tion, proved too much for the building, and caused the collapse. Not since the Brooklyn 1 heatre lire has there lieen such a terrible disaster. When the body of the last unfortunate is re moved from the wreck and ranged with its poor lellows in the long line of those that wait lor recognition it will be well if the list is iiiimlicreil in tens. No one in the building who is now alive heard the report of an explosion. There was a rumble like the roar of thunder, they say, and then the crash It was as il some gigantic truck with wheels of iron, Widened with tons on tons ol steel bars, had rolled over a pavement boulders and dropped its tremendous loatl with one burst of sound. Then came the lire and the smoke. Instantly, before the frightened people in the building could collect themselves to attempt escape, there rolled thestifling clouds of smoke and the roaring flames. ith one accord the people rushed to the main entrance, on Park place. Already it was impassable. And then, almost tumbling over each other, men and wo men, bovs and girls climbed and tell down the tire escaie on the Greenwich sitle of the building, 1 hose who were on the street sav thev heard the boom of an explosion. Hardly three seconds alter the report a hundred feet of the outer wall pitched out into the street. It buried in u mound ol brick men resting In mi their work, children it their pin v, and people passing along the sidewalk. It caught a horse hitched to a truck, and before the poor brute could realize where the blow of the first brick came from thousands of other bricks pounded it to death. By one ol those rare streaks of fortune its driver escaped. The brick ol the fallen wall had not stopped rolling along the street when the space they had occupied wns a red sheet of tire. The black, thick smoke rolled up as from the funnels of a thousand ocean steamers. Hie south wind wafted it awav, but its volume and its color told folks miles away its story of disas ter. Then came the firemen, but it was not till late Saturday night that any bodies could be tukeu trom the heated ruins. Ten of the injured arc at the hospital, of whom Barnett. ot Johnson City, Tenn.. is most seriously htire. His skull has been trepanned. The building was known as the Taylor building, and was condemned by the building department thirteen years ago. Thcaiithorities arc no nearer the solution of the explosion mystery than at first, but whatever caused it, there is no doubt that the condition of the building is re sponsible for the utter collapse ana -om pleteness of the wreck. New York, Aug. 2t. Nine additional bodies were taken from the debris ol the Inllen buildings last night and this morn ing, none ol which have been recognized. 1 Ins makes a total ol Jo. At the office of the boiler inscctor at police headquarters today it was staled that according to the records there the Taylor building had no steam boilers of anv kind, nor had there been any there lor several years. The steam power used in it was supplied from outside sources. During the morning one of the Italians working in the ruins stop)ied over the body ot one ot the victims and took silver watch trom the vest pocket. He whs arrested and taken to the station, lollowed by a mob, many ol whom shouted lynch him. IMPORTED AND DOMESTIC GIGARS AT Wholesale Prices.
