order promptly at 10 o'clock this morn
ing. After the presentation of the decis
ion in regard to the county democracy,
the committee on resolutions reported
the platform and it was read. Upon
motion of Mr. Griffin it was adopted
with cheers. The following, offered by
Mr. Carter, of New York, also passed:

Afferty, lineman for the Western Union
Telegraph company, was talking to
some Iricods in front of the court house
today, and then liegnn to climb a tele
graph pole to adjust a wire, lie had
reached a point bevond the first cross
bar. when, with a shriek, ne ten nncK-
ard. his spurs cauirht in the iron steps
of the oole, and he hung dowuwaru.
A telephone wire had fallen across the
electric light wire, and McAfferty received
a terrible voltage in his bony. I lis nice
and arras were burned black and he
hung fully three minutes before a bidder
could be had witn which to take mm
down. He died oa the way to the hos
pital.

Then T. F. Gillev moved to proceed t
nominations, and Mavor forier noini
nated Roswell P. Flower for governor.
In the course of his speech he said that
the dcmocrncT of the state at their pn
maries and district gatherings, with a
unanimity rarelv equalled, have pro
uounred their choice ol a person whom
thev desire to have made their leader by
the delegates to this convention. He
closed with a sketch of Flower's career.

Uourke Cockran seconded the nomisn
nation of Flower. Cockran was at one
time prevented from continuing his re
marks oh account of the veiling, presu
mablv from the Chnpin side, and when
these demonstrations subsided Cockran
remarked: "1 suppose this is the first
exhibition of a surly temper on your
part, turning to the Lhapin men
(eiieral Lutlin, ot King s county, sec
onded Chapin s nomination.
1 he convention then proceeded to vote
and Koswell P. Flower was nominated
on the first ballot, receiving 334 votes,
Chapin 34. Chas. P. Adams, ot Kings,
chairman of the delegatioa, made the
nomination unanimous amid the wildest
scenes of enthusiasm.
W. F. Sheehan, of Ituffalo, was unani
mously nominated tor lieutenant-governor.
Frank Rice was nominated for secre
tary of state by W. C. Fly, ot Saratoga,

Col. L. M. Hatch, at the Lyceum last
night, filling at short notice the place of
speaker unexpectedly absent, read
largely from an address to the cadets of
the Citadel academy at Charleston by
Hon. Geo. W.Dargan.
Mr. Dargan bad quoted largelv the
debasing views as to our cirilization ex
pressed by many writers, going so far as
to rank us with Australian busbmen and
the like. He had replied simply by ex
tracts from hostile critics, in some cases
the same now assailing us offering their
testimony to the fact that in statesman
ship we had excelled the north and had
produced able leuders in war, writers
and poets of the highest order. He gave
northern reasons for the superiority of
the south in statesmanship, and distis-

mental selections, poetry glided into his

the republican state convention to order
in Trcmont temple at 11:10 a. m. today,
he spoke to one of the largest gather
ings thut lias ever attended th; delibera
tions of the party's delegates. The floor

Ottawa Sept. 16. The strike of mill

was called out today. Deputations rep
