ASHEVILLE DAILY CITIZEN: MONDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 19. 1801. ASHEVILLE DAILY CITIZEN. Br RASDOLPH-KERR PRINTING CO. Tn Dh.tCithk. Democratic. I. published erery afternoon (except Sunday) t the fol lowing rate ttnctiy can : On Vb Six Monthi Thiii Month. On Montii On Win .(8.00 . a. oo . l.SO . 60 MONDAY. OCTOBER 19, 1891. Si'HAKiNoeditorially of the death of Gen. w u u the Snrinufield. Mass., Re- lican Said: "Jn 1888 he waschosen torgov ernor of Virginia, defeating John S. Wise, the republican candidate." It was Gen. Fitihugh Lee, a nephew of Gen. Robert E. Lee, who defeated John S. Wise for governor in 1885. The Mountain Home-Journal declares that it is not a republican newspaper, that it is not a democratic newspaper, that is is not an alliance newspaper, that it tint a third Dartr newspaper. In fact, up to the present moment it is tn nhaticallv the ereat "What is It?" Until it proves itsell to be something the public is entitled to look upon it as the great of American journalism. The Asheville Banner, a Sundav news tinner, made its aDDearance in Asheville yesterday. It is neatly gotten up typo graphically, and makes a good appear ance. It is republican in politics, and as such deserves the support of those who are "built that way." Messrs. Roberts & Haymond are the publishers, and B. Roberts is the editor. The subscrip tion price is $1.60 per vear. Many papers ot the state have spoken in terms ot praise concerning the exlnbi tiou of Buncombe county's products at the Raleieh exposition, some saying em phatically that it surpasses any other on the grounds. The News and Observer has not withheld from other counties and sections favorable mention, but up to date Buncombe has been left ant. Has this been oversight, or is it attribu table t a disposition to ignore Bun combe? Are the farmers of North Carolin complaining of the burdens put upon them by the state government? No, What the farmer complains of is the un just, unequal and burdensome which have been put upon him by the federal government. Whohascontrolled the state government since the war The democrats. Who has controlled the federal government? The republicans Col. Long, the editor of the Mountain Home Journal, has voted against every democrat elected in North Carolina since the war, and he has voted for every re- publicaa for whom he could vote, that has been elected to a federal office since the wur. Col. Long has voted against every man who has made the state laws which do not oppress you, and voted for every man who has made the federal laws which do oppress you. The farmers do not want a third party, what the; want is to kill the republican party and kill it quick. STATE NEWS. Kings Mountain is going to haye another cotton factory. Chapel Hill has 225 students, Wuke Forest 224-, Davidson College 14-". Evangelist Fife received $670 for eight davs service in Lumlierton, N. C. B It is intimated that Geo. C. Sliulock, ci.lored, will be appointed postmaster at Faycttcville. David Rosenthal,!!' Raleigh, has made an assignment. The total liabilities art something over $15,000. There were 10,1-00 persons on the exposition grounds at Kaleighon Friday, says a dispatch to the Wilmington Mes senger. Kings Mountain News: Mr. R. I. Watterson in prospecting Tuesday found a valuable sulphur mine. The sulphur is found Iree and pure in pockets in quartz. The general assembly of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church will meet at Stntesville this week. This is the highest court in the Associate Reformed church, South. The case of John M., Clias. H and Caldwell Molz, was culled at Lincoln court last week and after affidavits and counter affidavits Judge Graves decided to move it to Cleveland and set the trial for Tuesday, October 27. Cameron Morrison, at one timeeditor of the Spirit of the South, and at present a member of the State Republican Execu tive Committee, has sent ia his resigna tion to that body, and will henceforth vote the straight democratic ticket. Col. Walter L. Steele, of Rockingham, N. C. died at Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore Friday morning, aged sixty nine years. He was at one time a mem ber of congress from North Carolina. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina, and recently had the degree of L.L.D. conferred upon him. There was a livelv incident in the capitol square at Raleigh on Friday. The students of Wake Forest college seized State Auditor Sanderlin, placed him inside the railing of Washington's statue, called upon him for a speech and when he had finished it gave him three cheers as the next governor of the state. Newbern Journal: Rev. P.T. Ricaud, in bis lecture last night, look the posi tionand backed up his statements and arguments by scriptural quotations that the inferior racesof mankind did not originate with Adam ; that some races were in existence prior to and co-tetnpo-ra neons with him ; that the flood, con trary to the generally received opinion, did not' extend over the whole world; that those races did not therefore be come extinct, but that their descendants arc inhabitants of the world today, and the separate origin of their ancestry ac counts for the vast differences so manifest in the various types of the human family today.
