ASHEVILLE DAILY CITIZEN: TUESDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 8 181)1 Y ASliEVILLEDAILY CITIZEN. By RAMX)l.PH-KERR PRINTING CO TUEsDW. OECEMHER 8. 1iU Tub nrticle in yesterday's Citizen on "the nssnult on Rusvll Sage" should have been credited to the New York Her ald. It was a striking piece of work. C'riHp. In the ecction of Crisp, the first con gratulation is lor the democratic pnrty, iu that its representatives in congress have had the good sense not to prolong the contest till the country was tired of both them and it. It would have been a serious error to go on balloting through the weei with no exhibition of anything but bulldog tenacity. Crisp has some friends Tammany, for instance whom we do not lanev, and who are likely to influence him race or less in his exercise of the great power that gois with the speakership and makes it so attractive to men of ambi tion and capacity. His make-up of the committees in the house will, therefore, be anxiously awaited and closely scruti nized. If he does not make Mr. Mills chuirman ol the ways and means com mittee his influence will lie too marked for the good of the democratic party. It is pledged to a reform of the tariff, of which the menlier Irom Texas is the chief and most intelligent exponent now in public office. The Citizkn is gratified more than it is necessary to say that the speakership has come south. Crisp's personal quali ties are of such a high character that his election will do much to put to sleep tin sectional issue and the charge that it is not "safj" to give the south the power its ability anil votes entitle it to. A Soulln ni I.tU-rury MUKuxliie. The Lyceum lor December is on our table, and impresses us as one of the best numbers yet issued. There is an im at higher intellectual loftiness and n better ifgulated imagination, both fea tures of which are illustrated in a series of articles which would do honor to a magazine of greater literary pretensions. Among the (lescriptieearticlesisone that is especially interesting to thoscofus who watch the urourcss ol the meat Vander- bilt enterprise, as a school, not only in architectural art, elaborate landscaK gardening, perfected road making, but also in botany in a held so naturally rich and splendid as afforded by the for ests, hillsides, copses and valleys of Wes tern North Carolina. Mr. Ohnstead tells us and proves to us how our native treasures may be combined and con trasted with the forest and floral wealth of all the world besides; what we can adapt and what we must reject, what we can acclimatize and what is beyond our ability to domesticate; and teaches us what vast and bcaulitul additions each one may make to hisgrouuds. great or small, and refine and gratify still far ther iliosc pure tastes which loveol How crs, shrubbery and foliage always be gets. .Major Westall treats us to a very eruiliteauu luulilv instructive article on "The Star Depths," u subject that wi nlw ays lusciuate, w hile it will ahvavs bewilder, the cnquiiiug, yet unlearned mind. In some parts of the coun try ; money is already spoken of as "plenty."! There is more of that elusive but ubso- , lulely necessiii-y element conniience man there was a few weeks ago. What has brought about this change? Undoubtedly the results in the late elections had much to do with restoring confidence. There is now a pretty gen eral belief that, for some months at least, there will Ik- no financial IrKislatiun pro- , . posed except by conservative men who realize the sensitiveness of capital and wiil make haste slowly inbriugingabout financial reforms. We mny be mistaken in thinking that in this change in the financial situation, with its consequent benefit sooner or later to all industries and all classes, there must come to the rank and file, il not to the lenders of the alliance, some reflections Unit will result in good to thetn as well as to the country as a whole. One is that it was rertainlv mistake to allow any one in the name of the alliance, or in the name of any con sidei able body of men, to enter upon wholesale denunciation of capitalists, banks or bankers. It did not better the financial situation to speak of them as "robbers," as "sharks," as "Shylocks," or of Wall street as a "den of thieves." Money was none the plentier for such talk; nor wns the farmer any the quicker accommodated at his nearest bank be cause of the lact that its existence had been tbreatenrd by a "reform press" or by the lust "lecturer" who passed by. Asa mutter of fact the money market tightened with every such expression. We by no means intend to say that there were m.t other causesooerating to brinu about this result f but the kind and amount of the agitation we have spoken of was a very large factor among all the influences exerted. The man or set of men who have money want to keep it, and they want to keep it at its full value. At the first intimation that great financial problems are likely to be Juggled with by men with no experience in such matters anil wbo have little to risk, capital it called in, money becomes scarceandtheconsequeiit suffering is general. It may be expected," therefore, that we have seen reached theextremeo! denuncia tion of our bankingsystem and that fri'in now on calm discussion and well consid ered legislation will take its place. The problem is safe witb the democratic party. " " , - TO A TEAM. From a Member of the Lent Leff iHlalure. EniTOR The Citizen: "Pete Frizzle" and "OldChcd." Gosh, what a team!
