TUB QUAKER POET, The Venerable Man's) 84th Birth day Occurs Next Week. Oh the 17th of December, 1891, John O. Whittier will lie eighty four years old. The event ol bis birthday will be celebrated by his many friends, eminent und obscure. The poet lives in the ut most retirement in bis home st Ames bury, Mass. He and Oliver Wendell Holmes are the latest survivors of the group of eminent American poets that Hou'ished in the tirst half of the nine teenth century, nnd included Longfellow, Brvnnt, Emerson, Poe, Lowell, Halleck, and several others. She hud proceeded only a short listance when her boiler exploded, and she sank. There were thirty-three per sons on board. Twentv-oae were drowned, the other twelve tiring picked up by boats from other vessels near by. Bad Blood In Good Families. Decatur, Ala.. Dec. 12 Tolley Wil liams, son of Dr. Williams, and Will Wilhoite met at Mrs. Nelson's, where a dispute arose between them. Wilhoite drew his knife and cnt at Williams. C, Dec. 10. At Sno Hill, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Grimsley, liv ing together unhappily, were arranging to separate. Grimsley having deserted her she was going to her parents. Grim tley suspecting bis wile, secreted himself under a bed. , Rev. J. T. Abernathy, pastor of the Methodist church there, who is widely known in North Carolina, entered the room with Mrs. Grimsley, and it is said tried to console her. As he was about to leave he kissed her. At this moment hir husband came from his hiding ilacc and aiming his gun at the preacher's head pulled the trigger. There was a misfire, but the second barrel went off and tt Abernathy threw up bis hands he was struck by the shot. His nnndi was torn to pieces. Some shot struck hit forehead and mouth. He is severely injured, his luce badly disfig ured, but his wounds are not considered latal. Grimsley wus arrested and held to appear. Preacher Abernathy telegraphed bis presiding elder to come to Snow Hill, and also tendered his resignation as pustor of the Snow Hill circuit. His action in kissing Mrs. Grimsley is condemned as a gross indiscretion, though it is not thought his intentions were evil. The affair hus created a great sensation in that section, Mrs. Grimsley is a daugh ter ot Sheriff Murrill, of Onslow county. Richmond Dispatch. TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION. The County Organization Meets lu This Citv Today. The meeting of the Buncombe county teachers' association, held in tbe Orunge street graded school building today, wrs a lurge and enthusiastic one. Nearly one hundred teuchers were present, the large majority of which were ludirs. The association was culled to order by President C. B. Way, at 11 o'clock, and Secretary Jus. H. Cooper assumed his duties. There was considerable business trans acted, und a number ol discussions. Among the subjects were: "How can reading be langbt qu'ekest and best ?" The discussion vas led bv Prof. II. L. King, in an able address, and participated in by Mrs. N. B. McUo-vcll, of Weuverville college; Prol.J. B. Luns ford, und Prol. P. P. Claxton. "What shall lie made of tiie ubility to read ?" Discussion opened by Prof. P. P. Cluxtou, whose address was most thorough. " The relation of the teacher to the com munity in which he teuches."
