On Friday cTCiiini; a scries of tableaux vivanti were presented at the Battcrv Park hotel, for tbe benefit of the Mission Hospital of Asheville. The entertain ment was given under the management of Mr.Jas. Barton Key. wwli the assist ance of a committee of ladies consisting of Mrs. Battle. Miss Folsoin and Miss Stockwell. It is sate to nay that no more brilliant living pictures were ever composed than those which werepresentcd under the tal ented direction of this gallant manager. The scenery and slajjc settings were the most elaborate and beautiful ever shown here with any tableaux. The properties and decorations, manv of which mere superb, while all were picuircsipie, ar tistic and rare, were provided fur the oc casion through the kindness of Col.L'has V. Woolsey. The fine art gallery was opened by the appropriate disclosure of an artist's stu dio, where a Iiviiil' portrait, area, pretty and lascinatiiiL', was personated bv Mrs. luliau Lvnian, touched up by the hand of Mr. Seymour Men ell. Master W'estray Battle. A complete change ol the tuisc-etwenc disclosed Mrs. Iloleoinbe, in the enchant ing ndc of Mane Antoinette amid the charming surroundings ot the beloved Trianon. A glorious puce of coloring and grouping, in the well known picture of tile Florentine I'oct, was enacted by Miss llougliieliiigand the Messrs, Sharp, Bingham, Ualley and Child. The exquisite scenes from Faust were personated by Mrs. lloleotnbc, Miss I-!. I'eniiimau, Mr. Child and I'r. Battle. The latter, m the role o! An effective and tulcresung panloininu "The Call to Anns" was mimm excellently acted by Miss l-'olsoin and Mr. Herbert Child, while a chorus sang the "Mai.eil laise." Miss I-'oImmu's graeeail poses and evident lecbtiji ol the pari elicited much applause. The audience was completely fascinated bv the familiar and lovely pictures from 'Tinatorc." when Mrs. Lyman again fascinated as" Butter cup," while Lieut. King as the "Ad miral," Jr. Baltic as the "Captain" and Mr. Merrell as "hick Ucailee." were all capital. The "Sislers and theCouins and the Aunts," were acted bv a bevy ot pretty girls, in costumes, among whom were Mrs. SlwUr. Mrs. Burgess, Miss Hale and Miss Caliger. all in stunning costumes. The program was concluded with a reminiscence hum patience, in which the same pretty girls again appeared, assist ed by Mr. Bingham, as tiie "Kvcryday Young Man." During the intermission a delightful recitation was delivered by Miss Blandy, to winch all listened with pleasure. Throughout the evening the audience wat most eu th u siastie; so much so indeed, that every picture had to be repeated one or more tunes. Lverytlnng passed off smoothly, and all connected with the affair deserve the highest praise for their exceedingly suecesslul ellorts. Mr. Key, in particular. gave histiineaud attention, in the most indefatigable maimer to the promotion of the undertaking and lie cer tainly is to be congratulated on the bril liant success ol the evening. The management of the Batterv Park helped the cause excecningly by their generous co-operation; indeed, nothing could have been accomplished without their kind assistance. The dance alter the tableaux was en joyed by the many Aslievdle notables present, and furnished a delighllul con clusion tor the evening. The pelorinance was repealed this af ternoon at 3 o'clock. I. E. Dickerson left yesterday on a bus iness trip north. Theodore Harris, of Dillsboro, is in the city on business. Revenue collections vesterdav amount ed to $7,115.87. At Grant's pharmacy at 1' p. m. today, the thermometer registered i0. Recorder Miller had another blank docket in his court this morning. Col. Jas. G. Martin was out yesterday, alter suffering some time from the grip. Alderman Brevard and E. P. McKis sick returned yesterday from Cincinnati. Marriage license has been issued to T. A. Long and Leotia Lindsev, white, of Buncombe. A number of young people attended a very pleasant party at Miss Mary Pen laud's, oil lVulaiul street, last night. Prof. H. L. Smith, of Davidson College, anil L A. Coulter, state secretary of the V. M. C. A., are in the city, guests of C. H. Graham. It was E. U. Burr instead of Charles Iv. Burr who died on Grove street Thurs day night. The remains were shipped to Philadelphia today. George Manderhack, advance agent of the "Little Nugget" company, which comes here next Saturday night, the Until, is in the city. C. H. Goff, of Knoxville, is in the citv in the interest of the Covenant Building and loan association, the home office ol which Is in Kuoxvllle. The board of aldermen held the short est session on record yesterday afternoon at o'clock. Aldermen Startles. Gudger, McDowell and Leonard were present, and Mayor Hlanton presided. After the meeting had been called to order, Alderman Starncs arose and in troduced the following resolutions: Whereas, It has pleased the supreme council of heaven to take from our delib erations our able friend and fellow coun cilman W. T. Reynolds, who died on Sat urday morning, the loth uist., at o'clock. We submit humbly and at once to the Divine will, but be it Resolved 1. That m his death this body loses an able member whose ready thought and good judgment will be sad ly missed in making up our future decis ions. Resolved 2. That the whole city ol Asbeville. and the county of Buncombe has lost an intelligent, energetic and progressive citizen. Resolved 3. That we tender to his heartbroken wile and children, his moth er and family severally, our deepest sym pathy, and prav that an all wise Provi dence may watch over and keep them. Resolved . That a page of the city records be set apart for a memorial, and that these resolutions lie inserted therein. Resolved ". That a ci.pv of these reso lutions be sent to the wife and mother of the deceased, and that the city pliers be requested to publish these resolutions. After the reading of the resolutions. Alderman Gudger moved their adoption, which was carried unanimously. Then on motion of Alderman Gudger the board went into the election ot a successor to the late Alderman Reynolds. The mayor announced that the board would proceed to the election by ballot without nomination. When the ballots were counted, the mayor announced thai D. C. Waddell had been elected unanimously as Mr. Reynolds' successor. Then on motion of Alderman Gudger, the board adjourned out of respect to the memory oi the deceased nicmiicr. Has Not necltled. Maj. Waddell, the alderman-elect, w as seen by Tub Citizen this morning and asked it he would accept the position to which he was elected yesterday.
