AiiiNtiiioN, March 8.-The second trial of Dr. I. A. P. Baker ior tne murder of his wife by poisoning was ended last evening, the jury bringing in a verdict of "not guilty." The court house was packed with peo ple and when the jury came in at 4 o'clock, after an absence of an hour and the clerk had read the verdict, a most unueuul scene was enacted. Shouts ol 'hurrah," "hurrah for Dr. Baker," "hur rah for Botetourt," were sounded from hundreds of throats of the best people in the county. The most sensational occurrence that has ever stirred the hearts oi the people of Southwest Virginia and East Tennes kpc was developed on Sunday, May 3, 1801. when Dr. lohn A. P. Baker, a leading physician of Washington county, Virginia, was arrested on the streets 01 Abingdon for the alleged poisoning of his wife, Susan Baker, on September 0, 18'JO. On Mm 5 was published a thrilling ac count of the deplorable scandal, bringing out in brief the following iacts: la Feb ruary, 1891, Dr. Baker sold the old Baker homestead at Baker's Chapel, some three and odd miles from Abing don, and moved with his children to the latter point. He sold the farm to Mr. u. C Cf Tiilm who throuch some hired hands on the place, found some old let ters in the foundation of the Baker man sion. These tell-tale messages indicated that the aged doctor had been intimate wit h Mrs. Mariraret Gilmer, the charming wife of Mr. Wvndham Gilmer, a highly re spected, middle-aged farmer ot Washing ton county; and it is alleged indicate" that in order to legalize this cliargeu 1111 i it relation. Dr. Baker had killed his no ble wife bv slow poison, and, together with his naramour, had by similar tac tics unsuccessfully attempted the life ol Mr. Gilmer. The officers ol the law ar rested Mrs. Gilmer first, and she, imag ining that the public knew all the facts, made a full confession to W. L. Cunning ham. esq., implicating Dr. Baker in the tragic affair. r, u.,bur wna t:.lpn tn iail. and on 111.
