Final Disposal of Hie Estate ot a Wealthy Virginian. Richmond, Va., June 10. A special dispatch from Wythcville says : The su preme court of appeals today decided the celebrated Bettic Lewis-Thomas case in favor of the plaintiff. By this action a colored woman, who is a resident of Richmond, becomes the possessor of an estate valued at about $l!00,OO0. Her father, W. Chicago, June 18. "Cleveland will be nominated on the first onllot." So spoke the Hon. Wm. C. Whitney, of New York, in a very emphatic manner as he emerged fron' the conference of the Cleveland managers which had lasted from 9 o'clock last night till ancarly hour this morning in Whitney's private pa lors at the Richelieu. The gathering was by long odds the most important one that has been held since the political hosts began to center in Chicago. It wa called for the express purpose ol looking over the entire line of battle and of determining any weak points if they existed. rorcmost among the conlcrces were Whitney nnd Don, M. Dickinson. It was no ordinary gathering of Cleve land enthusiasts. On the contrary, every man who came represented a section ol the country Irom which the Cleveland strength is to be drawn and each man was a icndcr ol national prominence Adlai Stevenson, ex-assistant postmaster general under Cleveland, and probably temporary chairman ol the convention was present. The southern stales were well reprc- sented. What was done in the hours of earnest conference is briefest told in the first duotcd statement of ex-Secretary Whit ney : "Cleveland will be nominated on the first ballot." The strength of Cleve land in every section of the country was examined with minute detail. "I have thought from the first," said Mr. Whit ney, "that Cleveland had a majority and would be nominated, but it was not until I heard these reports from conserva tive and thoroughly posted leaders trom all over the country that 1 became ab solutely confident that Cleveland would he nominated on the hrst ballot." "Is this feeling ol confidence based on (inures ? 'Certainly, but ve have no figures to offer for publication as yet. In a word, however, they show that there will be only one ballot and that will nominate Cleveland."
