Hut ahout the preparations. Tim Citizen had a talk vesterdav afternoon with Fire Chief George S. s r A- Powell, with regard to progress towards the reception of the visitors. "The committee," Chief Powell said, "are all getting along very well. Those who subscribed to the fund for prizes, etc., are paying their subscriptions promptly, as a rule, and all is well along that line." "How about the late unpleasantness in the firemen's ranks?" he was asked. Everything o. K. "That Ins all been settled," he replied. There is no difference between the mem bers of the department, and all of them are working harmoniously together for one common end the making of the tournament nnd convention a thorough success and I believe they w ill succeed full v. It was at first feared that the new hose com pany would be bartcd from the contests on account of its recent formation. Hut the matter has been arranged satisfac torily, and the Ashevillc boys will be in the race by a big majority hose men and hook and ladder men. "The committee has received letters from several companies in South Caro lina that desire to come here on this oc casion if a prize be offered lor an inter state contest. The ob ject is to raise more lunds for the races, and it possible increase the amount ot tered in prizes. The cause is a most worthy one, and the dummy line should be taxed to its utmost to carry the peo ple who desire to help the firemen. 1 here are doubtless many ladies 111 Ashcville who are willing to assist in the way of furnishing cakes, ices, etc., or presiding over booths at the pavilion. Twelve daya yet ! Remember the dummy line excursion next Thursday for the firemen's benefit. BARBECUE- A Pleasant Occasion lu West Asbevllle Yesterday. Yesterday morning R. M. Deaver, of West Ashcville, circulated in all the re gion round about the news that he would give his neighbors and friends a barbecue dinner that day in one of the fine hilltop groves on his land just west of Smith's bridge. By ten o'clock everything was in' readiness chickens, beef, mut ton, soda water, and every food thing to eat and drink that any temper ance crowd could wish; and about a dozen men, women and boys went to work grinding and making coffee, barbe cuing meats, making nnd distributing lemonade and ice cream. In the mean time about 100 persons gathered in the grove, and about 2 p. m. n sumptuous dinner was enjoyed. Gaines, who entertained the assembly for about twenty minutes. The thanks of the assembly in the grove were extended to Mr. and Mrs. Deaver nnd their daughters, Mrs. Ur. L. B. The North German Lloyd's steamer Trave, from New York, June 21 for Bremen, arrived at South ampton this morning. She had on board Cnpt. 15. F. Hulbcrt, of the British ship Fred B. Taylor, from Havre May 12, for New York and nineteen of the crew of that vessel. The Trave was in collision with the Taylor June 22. The Taylor was so badly damaged that, it is presumed on board the Trave, she sank shortly after wards. The chief officer ol the Taylor was crushed to death und Capt. Ilulbett had his leg injured. The grand jury of Orange county reconvened at Goshen today and examined ten or twelve new witnesses about the lynching of Bob Lewis. " Death lu Shelby. A telegram received here thisafternoon by J. B. Bostic announced the death in Shelby at 11 o'clock this morning of W. C. Bostic. Mr. Bostic had been suffering for several days with pneumonia. He was 35 years of age and leaves a wife and five children. Messrs. J. B.,J. T. and L. Bostic, brothers of the dead man, will leave Ashcville tomorrow morning to attend the funeral. The Prohibitionists. Cincinnati, June 30. When the prohi bition convention was called to order today the platlorm committee was still in session. The committee on creden tials reported !)72 delegates present, Louisiana and South Carolina ticing the only states not represented. Police Report. According to the reports of Recorder Miller and Chief of Police McDowell there were during the month of June just closing 17 urrcsts by the pa trolmen on the torce, The total amount ol fines wns$U2G, of which $1 1 0 05 was collected in cash. The costs in all of the cases was $24. Lynched. Nashvili.h, June 30. Tom Lilliard (colored), who outraged Miss McKnight near Woodbury on Monday, was lynched by a mob at that place last night about 11 o clock. Argument Cloned. The argument in the habeas corpus case before Judge Shu ford was concluded this morning. The judge will render his decision tomorrow at 12 o'clock. Entertainment lu Washington Differences on the Naval BUI. Washington, June 30. In the house today Mr. Torney, from the committee on appropriations, reported back tie legislative appropriation bill with the senate amendments and moved that the amendments be nun-concurred in nnd conference ordered. The motion was agreed to. It took the conferees 011 the naval ap propriation bill just about half an hour this morning to agree to disagree and to rcpor' that disagreement V tbeif respec tive houses. The points, at issue arc the increases in the naval establishment made by the senate amendments, includ ing the provision for six torpedo boats, one sea-going battle ship, one harbor de fence vessel of the Monitor ripe and four light-draught gun boats, The house conferees also refused to accept the sen ate amendment appropriating money for a naval rendezvous during the World's tnir. In the senate today Mr. Hale, from the conference committee on the naval appropriation bill, reported that the committees were unable to agree. He moved that the senate further insist on its amendments and ask tor further con ference. Agreed. The conference report on the District of Lolumuia appropriation bill was pre sented and agreed to. All points of dif ference between the two houses, Mr. Allison said, had been arranged except that on the question of entertainment ol the G. A. R. The bouse conferees con tended that the amount should be re duced from $100,000 to $7f,000 nnd should be paid exclusively out of the taxes of the District, while the senate conferees were satisfied that even $100, 000 would be inadequate and that it should be paid as other expenses of the district. Foster to be secretary of state and the president signed his commission. AS ACCESSORY. The Trial of S. E. Shellou at Mar shall Yesterday. Julius C. Martin, of the legal firm of Gudger & Martin, has returned from Marshall, where he was engaged in the prosecution of S. E. Shclton, who was charged with aiding and abetting Wm, M. Shclton in the murder of Grant Tweed on Spill Corn creek, Madison county, about two weeks ago. Shclton was bound over to the next term of court in the sum of $500, us an accessory after the fact. The Parnellitc's seized the speaker's platform before the arrival of the Tan- nerite's. Dr. Tanner made determined efforts to get on the platform, and each time was knocked down.
