Fire Clilel Powell Tells 'The
Citizen" Something About I He
Illlt Eveul The Fire Depart,

ly aud the Affair Will be ( creat
success.
Twelve days from today !
Then will occur thcopening of Restate
firemen's (..invention in Ashcville
Wednesday, July 13, the second day of
the Gala Week.
And a great time il will be lor the fire
men from nil parts ol the state. There
will he a big crowd of them here, at least
100 delegates being expected .0 fay
nothing of the teams that wil. u me here
to take part in the racesand contest for
prizes. Besides these, every company
will bring a number of visitors and
Ashcville will see such a gathering of life
and property savers ns she has never
seen, and may never see again.
Hut ahout the preparations.
Tim Citizen had a talk vesterdav
afternoon with Fire Chief George S.
s r
A-
Powell, with regard to progress towards
the reception of the visitors.
"The committee," Chief Powell said,
"are all getting along very well. Those
who subscribed to the fund for prizes,
etc., are paying their subscriptions
promptly, as a rule, and all is well along
that line."
"How about the late unpleasantness
in the firemen's ranks?" he was asked.
Everything o. K.
"That Ins all been settled," he replied.
There is no difference between the mem
bers of the department, and all of them
are working harmoniously together for
one common end the making of the
tournament nnd convention a thorough
success and I believe they w ill succeed
full v. The men have taken hold with a
will that shows a determination to
leave nothing undone in showing the
rest of the state whut Ashevillc can do
when she makes up her mind. It was
at first feared that the new hose com
pany would be bartcd from the contests
on account of its recent formation. Hut
the matter has been arranged satisfac
torily, and the Ashevillc boys will be in
the race by a big majority hose men and
hook and ladder men.
"The committee has received letters
from several companies in South Caro
lina that desire to come here on this oc
casion if a prize be offered lor an inter
state contest. This is now being con
sidered and I have no doubt the prize
will be offered. It is a decidedly good
idea and will add to the interest of the
program, ns well us bring more people
to Asueviiie.
"The races will take placeon Montford
avenue, on the level stretch of street just
opposite the park. The ground has been
rolled aud will be in the bt.'t possible
condition for the event. You can tell
everybody that the Ashcville fire depart
ment is all right, the people 01 AsheviPc
are St.. OKht, and we will treat the visi
tors all right. The gonvention L 'ago.'"

A Pleasant Occasion lu West
Asbevllle Yesterday.
Yesterday morning R. M. Deaver, of
West Ashcville, circulated in all the re
gion round about the news that he would
give his neighbors and friends a barbecue
dinner that day in one of the fine hilltop
groves on his land just west of Smith's
bridge. By ten o'clock everything
was in' readiness chickens, beef, mut
ton, soda water, and every food
thing to eat and drink that any temper
ance crowd could wish; and about a
dozen men, women and boys went to
work grinding and making coffee, barbe
cuing meats, making nnd distributing
lemonade and ice cream. In the mean
time about 100 persons gathered in the
grove, and about 2 p. m. n sumptuous
dinner was enjoyed. The Lindsey brass

thanks of the assembly in the grove were
extended to Mr. and Mrs. Deaver nnd
