Xyc.j i Every friend uf goml Rovfriutii'iit ami civilization will woleomo with a shrill , cry of delight tho news that wo arc go in;; to have liettor roads in this other wise well groomed reuuhlie. For over a century we 1 avo vied with each other to sco whieh .statu mid which city would excel in its its living wild beasts, its jails, its schools and its churches. Ever since the invention of tho loco motive merchants, mechanics and farm ers have fallen over each other in their efforts to suo who could be first to fran- i-A A HI CK SIlnAI.S KOA 11. cliise, irrant, bond, iiioit'i!i';i- and ntiier- wlso give land, ri.lit of way, e.i eineat, conveyance and general liiwiiiiality lo railroads, yet in the nieaniiiiie driviii.e into town on three wheels with the tarred axlo of the fourth one ridimr on a lltuiarao pole. Every iuilu.-lry has preceiled the civil izing inlhienco of practical roadlmil i lw'. I lio timo baa como for emauci pation. We havo really overdone the building of railroads, and cmi.-tnicteit theiu throui;'Ii space, hoping that agri culture would owrtal;e the hulfet cai but it cannot, bcrau:-e its wajjoii roads tiro inipassahle except to Serapiiiin. Jleli of prominence tbrutij,-lniiit tlie country have been receiving for some fimo Well penned letters from the type writer of Albert A. l'ope, of I'ust.m, who Uas discovered, uo doubt, that tho reason NVo crowd into tlw cities to live is because we can get from nuo stovelo anoiluT without getting mired, It; is now proposed to uiaho a road de partment in tlio exposition at Chicago. Wherein may be seen all manner o' roads, roadbuilding material, too i, nni cfiinery, etc., from a right of way villi a rut in the center of it to a sprinkling cart that will wait, for tho man with l lie fresh duck vest and tho linen trousers and newly polished buoU before it will sipiirt. An originally designed, tho roadniak ing machinery and material, as we'l as cross sections of roads, were to be so scattered over the ground, being in four teen groups, that the visitor must look through five immetiw) buildings, cover ing 7'J li-10 acres of ground, in order to sco what the world is doing in the way of Making roads, Wo have, very often homo grown products, 1 know as a farmer, which would yield something if we could take a profitable load to our nearest town, but whero we can only draw 500 pounds and talto off a wheel en routo we find that wo had better loso tho goods than try to market them under such circum stances. Referring to homo grown horses, 1 will add that we need, if we could ufford it, a strain of the better class of blood, such as thu l'ercheroii, tho Norman, and well known English families dating back to William tho Conqueror. I was never more mortified than last week. 1 had endeavored on my stud farm at Buck Shoals to rear a new and attractive mule, ami in 3-iy we were blessed with a little bunny mule of the, clay bank variety, sired by a Kentucky papa and dammed on the place. For years 1 have not been cursed by pride. Since tho artist has been practic ing on me with a view to some day illus trating a book called "Life Among tho Lowly; or, Eighty Years on tho boor for Mephistophelcs," lean truly say that I am not proud, but a week ago I wont to town with the mother of tho now mulo Marguerite, as I deemed it timo to wean her. So we left Marguerite moored to tho well curb and 1 drove on to Asho villo to market a bunch of fat pine. The day was beautiful. , Tlio odor of clover and the sweet, seductive smell of tlio azalia seemed to lift me oft the seat. A small black hornet also assisted in tho great work. "Oil, joy! oh, joy!"' 1 naid "what a gladsome day, Is it not indeed a plumb honey?" an wo say in Hooper township. The air was impregnated with ozone, and now and thou we could hear tho neigh of my palfrey ueighing. Sho neighed for her absent child with a mother's neigh. Tlio fact that bitter things had been said about her and social ostracism had come with the little Stranger did not steel her warm mother heart toward the little ono. True, she Ciould not remember any of her folks who ran so freely to ears as Marguerite did, but she recked not. When I bad marketed my fat pine kindling wood at the Keuilworth inn ami fought hay with tue inouqy, for I have to bfy bay In order to feed my stock on the farm, 80 that they can cultivate my fatm, 6a that I car) look forward to tho time Atherj I can buy more hay to feed ttiy team, bo that they will feel strong ilnd well onomili to cultivate fbn soil, so that I will lie cheered ou to buy morn hay for tho fame purpose. As I stood at tho porto cochcro of tho hotel, looking down into tho eyes of n bright young girl from Tuxedo, who is hero for her father's asthma, though ho is not hero yet, I heard, borne across tho beautiful bosom of tho Swananoa, the mellow bray of Marguerite. Sho came with a famished snort, and Sheridan some twenty odd miles away was no where There was a rattlo of tiny hoofs on the-gravel drive, a little, glad cry of recognition from tho mamma, and the clay bank mule Marguerite was monkey ing ith what is called tho maternal font. The reader can readily understand V now the mulo Marguerite, liy connecting herself with my palfrey, had hurt mo socially at Keuilworth inn, and how the young lady who c.mie here to try the balsam and the healing of the North Carolina mountains for her father's asthma excusVd herself to get a heavier wrap, thereby intimating that there was a coolness between us, also that I needed a heavier rap. Anyway, I have never seen her since. To return to our national roads, it is a wonder that we have, as Americans, so long submitted to the savage and danger ous ruts over which wo haul our empty, wabbly, worn wagons. Tho reason is, doubtless, that wo generally select our choicest and densest ass to superintend the building and repair of our roads, and in many cities our streets also. Ho works on the muds in summer and sits on the jury in winter, lie is generally a man who is selected because he has never been outside of the county, lie is noted for his gravity, gloom and the opacity nf hi:i mind. Another reason is the same that has been fatal to most all fanner movement, though started with the im.t holy and honest motive:!, viz., thit wo farmers cannot, like tho residents of cities, seo each other every twenty-four hours and plot against other trades. When we have done over nineteen hours of work and another honr's wholesome thought interchange with our calf kindergarten, and tlujn mutton tallowed onr bunion, we must needs rest in order to be up and combating with tho early bird for the ill advised worm. Still, somehow tho foreign peasant in several European countries, far inferior to ours otherwise, has a road over which he hauls a carload as compared with tho silly little convention jag which wo seo so often here. I am patriotic, I had almost said, to a degreo. I shot away two solid hours of fireworks here this year, sent to me by tho manager of Pain, the international pyrotechnieker and fuller of Sebastapol, Peking, Koine and other cities that hail formed the habit of falling; did it, too, where the celebration of tho Fourth of July has so long remained unobserved that the best bird dogs here tried this year to retrieve tho common crackers, and looked thoroughly ashamed when they thought they had flushed a three pound rocket; and yet I say that, patri otic and enterprising as we are in other things, in education for instance, and the ambition to havo about eight more churches than we can support in each village, together with other real evi dences of advancement, we have got the worst country roads that havo been per mitted since tho days when the earth was a vast hot, steaming ball of mud, lit only for a mighty lizard farm. Some states havo by nature a delight ful country ro ul. Kentucky was born with good road;'. So were Colorado and Wyoming, In the very heart of tho Ilocky mountains these last, two stales have a natural roadbed wherever it is needed. Forty and fifty miles per day with an ordinary team is the rule rather than the exception, while In the spring, when the frost is coming out of the ground and tlio new milk cow is a burden in the laud, the rich, deep, black country road of Iowa and Illinois cannot bo passed even by a two-thirds majority. Hut what are wo to do? Wo may laugh over it if we choose. Homo people have a wonderful control over themselves in their grief. Once thero was a young man ou board our steamer, coming from Queenstown homeward bound, who was the life of the party. When others were ill and had gastritis rpiito a considerably, he was always our bit of sunshine. Ho could tell stories funny stories tell them, too, so that they sounded liko reading from a largo leather covered SAMPLES 0? Till! MOUTH CAKOUNA 1WAHS. tome, never failing to put in the "said he," or tho "oh, she replied," just as the book did. Ho could play the tumbler ouicon and a voluntary on tlio mouth organ. Ho was liko a buttle of cham pagne, ever fizzing and tho life of the party all the way over. When wo got to Sandy Hook he broke off suddenly in the midst of a joke and said Boftly to a passenger whom ho led aside behind tho smokestack: "I am gay, as you 6eo; gay to the age. I spread joy among tho passengers wherever I go. I uua a ray of sunshine here, thero and everywhere. People cluster about mo to get a hearty laugh and catch the contagion of my merry atmosphere and enjoy uiv iocxhaustablr JraS of anecdote, but my heart is realij sad on the insidd. fcI am coiner homo to burv mv rnuutf wifo. Sho died in Chicago and will be buried hi Brooklyn on my arrival. Have you any idea what it costs to bring a re wains from Chicago to New York over tho Pennsylvania roadr" Again returning to tho matter of wagon roads, let every ono who reads this letter reaolvo that he or she will not rest content till our roads shall lie equal m every respect to our Ixmndlcss enter prise iu other respects, instead of being at tho everlasting tail of barbarism, They are inhuman for ono thing. V form societies for tho prevention of cruelty to animals and then beat our dumb beasts through swamps and muck holes, over roads that it would bother a peri with eleven foot wings to go over lightly. Let every ono with an idea on roads go to Chicago with it, taking also a change of umbrellas and a scrip con tabling tho prico of two weeks' board and credit at the home bank. Mr. Pope also suggests tlutt cross seC' tions of wagon roads lie shown at the exposition. I am collecting a few in North Caro, lina, and am getting cans inadttoput them in, r I have not decided yet whether to filter tnein or not, s CHURCH NOTICES.
