Christmas in Asheville will be a merry
time for the young people. Their elders
have done more ihis year thun ever to
insure them a good time and a great
many treats are ia store for the children.
Almost all of the churches will provide
festivities of some kind for them.
The children of the French Broad Bap
tist church will enjoy a Chnstmns tree
Tuesday evening. A genuine Santa
Clnus will be on hand to distribute the
presents, and Christmas carols will be
sung by tbe members of the Sunday
school. The committee has been hard
at work for some time and the children
will fare royally.
There will be no tree at the North
Asheville M. B. Church South. Iustead
there will be an entertainment for the
Sunday school children some evening
during Christmas weik. Monday after
noon perhaps. Recitations and Christ
mas carols will be on the program. Each
child will be given Iruit and candy and
some other token, Sunday morning tbe
regular service will be dispensed with
and the Sunday school and church will
unite in a Christmas service, with songs
suited to the occasion. An address to
the children will be made.
It has been decided to have no Christ
mas tree at the First Presbyterian Sun-
day school. Some evening during the
week there will be a social gathering of
the children in the Sunday school room
Bach child will be expected to bring
some gilt, and the collection of articles
thus made will be devoted to the Christ-
mas celebration for the children of the
Southside Presbyterian chapel.
Tbe Sunday school ot tbe Unitarian
congregation will meet in Milliard hall
on South Main street at tbe regular
time Sunday morning, 10 o'clock. The
celebration will consist of Christmas
carols and an address by tbe pastor,
Rev. Frederic W. Sanders. At the morn
ing service at 11 o'clock, Mr. Sanders
will preach a siiccial Christmas sermon
and the collection taken up will be de
voted to the tree Kindergarten tund ol
Asheville.
At Trinitv Episcopal church the Sun
day school celebration of Christmas will
occur Sunday alternoou at 4:du o clock
The children have spent considerable
time practicing on the Christmas carols
to be sung at this service, under the di
rection of Organist Peacock. Much in
tercst has been manifested and
was spent in kindergarten games and
singing of appropriate Christmas songs,
then a package of confection and toys
as given to eacn cnua.
At the Alms house tomorrow at 2 p.
a generous Christmas dinner will be
provided tor inmates. This is done by
the Flower Mission and donations will
be needed. It is requested that those
ho have articles to send for this occas
ion will see that they are left at Mrs.
Sluder's on North Main street before 12
'clock tomorrow. A Christmas tree
will take place atthe Almshouse at 3:30.
The Children's Home will be handsomely
provided for by a tree Tuesday atternoon.
The Sunday s.hool of the Lutheran
church will enjoy a Christmas tree at the
. M. C. A. ball Monday evening.
Tbe Sunday school Christmas tree at
the M. E. church at the corner of Hay
wood and Buttrick steets will be shown
Monday evening at 7:30. Each person
who attends will be expected to pay an
admission fee at the door, of an apple or
an orange, or some such article, and tbe
collection thus made will be given to tbe
poor.
Tbe colored churches are all making
plans for Christmas celebrations. The
one on College street maintained by the
M. B. Church will have a Christmas
house" Tuesday evening.

every wish has been gratified by loving
friends, will be glad to give to their less

dred Methodists, and a great many mem
bers of other churches in the city wel
corned Rev. II. F. Chreitzberg, the new
pastor of Central Methodist church.
The rooms of the Association were filled
almost to the point of crowding.
The fc-iests were received in the parlors
on tbe second floor, and were introduced
to Mr. Chreitzberg and his family. These
rooms were decorated with Christmas
greens in the best of taste. From each

while on every picture and in every cor

consisted of salads, sandwiches, coffee
and chocolate, ice cream and cake, bo
ureat was the crowd that both the lect
ure hall and tbe gymnasium had to be
used tor serving the edibles. Notwith
standing the large number of persons to
be provided lor. however, there was an
abundance and a considerable quantity
was left over. Those who waited on the
tables were : Misses Clara and Bertha
Nelson, Anna and Louise Smith, Bonnie
and Bessie Reeves, Daisy Sawyer, Sallie
Crawford, Nora Ware, Dollie Sevier,
Pearl Fitzpatrick, lessic Merrick, and

Laredo, Tex., Dec. 23. Information
was received here yesterday that Gen.
Estrada, stationed at Micr, Mexico, is
missing from his post of duty and is
thought to have joined the revolution
ists, who are said to be marching toward
the interior of Mexico.
It is known that there was a battle on
the 17th on Mexican soil, near Guerrero,
between the Mexican troops and the
revolutionists, with a victory (or the
latter. Five soldiers were killed .
The revolutionists, 400 strong, con
tinued their march toward the interior.
When last heard from they were within
few hours march of the town of Ccral ve.
This information is from a person high
in authoi ity. He further states that the
Mexican troops down the river have
been given orders to march into the
interior and that no further trouble will
come at present from this side of the Rio
Grande.
Nueva Lakedu, Mex., Dec. 23. Re
ports although conflicting, come from
several parts of the northern side of Mex
ico indicating the growta ol tne revo
lutionarr movement. Despatches are
rushinir from Mexican officials to United
States officers of the frontier, and in the
near future there will be a genuine revo
lution in Mexico. It is positively known
that there was p. battle on the 17th, on
Mexican soil near Guerrero, about tuirt
miles from the river, between Mexican
troops and revolutionists, with a vie
tory for the latter. It is reported that
another battle took place on the 19th,
when ten men were killed at Coralve,
where there is a garrison of Mexican
soldiers. Five of them were captured
and burned, half alive. The revolution
ists cave and asked for no quarter, but
in every way out-fought the regular
Mexican soldiers.
The revolutionists sent two spies into
Texas to spread the rumortbatthe revo
lutionists were on this side, and while the
Diaz forces were asleep, and the united
States forces hunting throutjli the mes
nuite brush for men who were not even
on the north side of the Rio Grande, the
revolutionists were growing in strength
and pilagmg the Nortn Mexican garri
son.
It is reported here that the government
has seized tbe railraads for olhcial pur
poses. A special train of twelve coaches
left Monterey last night for Lanpasas
Gavos. with eight companies ot cavalry
and they will march with all possible
speed toward Guerrero.
No intormation has been received irom
United States troops down the river, but
it is reported they arepatroling the fron
tier with little expectations ot capturing

His Administration Hostile
South Carolina industries.
CoLVMniA, Dec. 23. Nearly four hun-d.-ed
railroad employees of South Caro
lina met last night and decided to
organize an Iudustrial Union of South
Carolina to fight the present adminis
tration. All laboring men in the State
will be invoked to join the luiion. Some
speeches were made in which Governor
Tillman was denounced. Resolutions
were adopted condemning the Wilson
railway law as inimical to the working
men, aim declaring mat mere is a gen
eral disposition on the part of the present
administration to work injury to maus
trinl pursuits in South Carolina.
VOTED DEAD MEN.

Arrests at Once.
I'akis, Dec. 23. A conference between
Ribot, Prime Minister; Bourgeois, Min
ister of Justice, and Loubet, Minister of
the Interior, was held this morning, with
the result that orders were issued to the
police to make arrests of all persons im
plicated in the Panama scandal.
It is expected that, in consequence of
statements made before the Panama
investigation committee yesterday by
Floquet, President of the Chamber of
Deputies, he will be advised to resign his
position in the chamber.
The Figaro today says that before
Clemenceau and Deroulede fought their
duel yesterday the latter directed his
seconds to inform Clemenceau that if he
( Deroulede) did not lose his life in the
duel he would continue to attack Clem
enceau in the Chamber. The paper adds
that Deroulede refused to shake hands
with his opponent.
A panicky feeling prevails on the
Bourse and considerable full has occurred
in the price of three per cent, rentes. At
the close last night these securities were
quoted at 98 francs, V. i centimes. When
the Bourse opened this morning the
price offered was 97 francs, 32 cen
times, and the quotation steadily de
clined until at this hour (2 p. m.) 9G
francs, 70 centimes, is the market price.

promises startling developments. Chns.
F. Day, Republican, was declared elected
over John O'Neill, Democrat, the present
incumbent by fourteen majority. O'Neill
believed that frauds had been perpetrat
ed, ami at once set on foot a searching
investigation, which resulted in a show
ing to bis satisfaction that some 800
dead men had been voted for his oppo
nent, and that a wealthy manufacturer
was privy to a plot to defeat him and
send a Republican to Congress.
Crisp's Chances.
Washington, Dec. 23. Mr. Outhwaite
of Ohio, who was one ol" the shaker's
most trusted lieutenants in his fight for
the present sjicakership savs :

Jeksuv Citv, N. J., Dec. 22. Edward
W. Hallinger was hanged in this city at
10 o'clock this morning for murdering
his wife. He was a negro, but asserted
that he was born in Trabc, Ireland, and
he invoked the aid of the British minister
to preserve him from the gallows upon
the ground that he was a British subject.
The date of his execution has been sev
eral times postponed by the efforts of
Lawyer Pasball who appealed to the
United States supreme court upon tech
nicalities ot all sorts, it was announced
today that Pasball would today muke
another effort in tbe United States Su-
court and a telenram was received from
him at 9:30 o clock, asking the snenii to
wait until 2 o clock this atternoon, but
no attention was paid to the request.

for the better and his spirits have risen
pruportional. The physicians, how
ever, give no reason tor supposing that

An Awful Double Murder.
Tallulah, Ga., Dec. 23.-While Capt,
B. B. Pierce and J. W. Garrett were sit
ting in the former's office at Altoona
Station last night some unknown person
approached one of the windows and
placing the muzzle of a gun against
pane of the window glass fired two
shots killing them both instantly.
