President Harrison and Mr. Cleveland
walked out of the chamber arm in arm.
Oirectly behind followed a quaint figure
in a. rusty black overcoat, carrying a
rustier black umbrella, poised upon the

Reverently and with almost touching
dignity this figure trod past the attend

It was ex-Senator Clingman, once a

IMPORTASCE OF OOOD ROADS.
C. D. Stnilli in Pranklin Press
During my confinement of live months
to my room and consequent exclusion
from the usual intercourse with my
neighbors and friends, 1 have done a good
deal of thinking on various subjects
which concern the public welfare anil the
future prosperity of our State. The one
subject which comes uppermost has been
suggested by the reports which come to
me of the terrible condition of the public
roads.
During the spring and summer of
1853, I traveled in a buggy over a large
part of Middle Tennessee. The macada
mized pikes leading out from Nashville
in eight or ten different directions were
then comparatively new. The building
of those roads formed an epoch tn the
material history of Nashville anil Middle
Tennessee. Although rich and fertile in
an eminent degree, the vast products of
the country were locked up on account
of the numerous bad roads which for a
part of the year were practically impas
sible for carrying out products or bring
ing in needed supplies. Finally troir-
sheer necessity the public mind was
Water Taking the Place of Coal.
One of the most interesting processes
now going on is the. conversion of water
into light, beat and power. The great
obstacle in the way of cheap electric
lights anil power has been the cost of
coal and other fuel. But all over the
northwest water is being utilized for
running electric plants. An electrician
who has recently been looking over Mon
tana and the northwestern states finds
that everywhere water powers are In-ing
taken up and utilized to create electric
ity. So cheap is this process that the
use of coal is out of the question. No
light and power can 1h created so cheap
ly as that where a mountain stream has
been made to do the work. What was
an experiment a short time ago has now
become one of the most remarkable in
dustrial developments of the time. Ex
change. Chloride of Kllij l.
A new local ana-sthetic has been in
occasional tise in surgery for the past
year. Previous to that time it was chief
ly used by dentists. The name of the
Kinesthetic is chloride of ethyl, which
has a jH-culiar odor, not nt all offensive;
on the contrary, pleasant and a sweet
taste. It will take the place largely of
chloroform and ether, which require
considerable time to have effect on a pa
tient. Moreover, it is much safer. It
can be used, for example, in the cutting
of an abscess or any other such slight
operation. It issimply a matter of spray
ing the affected portion of the body. Its
chief component is alcohol. Xow York

'KEM-ICOM"
Is n. chemical compound, harmless in every respevt, and isrrfectly simple in its ap
plication. It is a powder which ia dissolved in water, and this solution sprinkled
over tbe coal.
This material is for use on either hard or soft coal, in tbe boiler furaace, stove
and range.
Sayea 25 per cent, of the coal; also labor time dind dirt; destroys the deadly coal
gas which often permeates tbe home, producing? diphtheria and nil kinds of naaal
and membranous diseases, thus insuring bealtb and pure air in tbe homes, school
houses, and all places where coal is used.
Coal treated with Kem-Kom ignites quickly, lasts longer, and gives out intense
heat. Starts a vigorous 6 re in one fourth of the time it takes without Kent Kotn.
Largely lessens tbe ashes, prevents clinkers and cinders, burns tbe soot and a
large portion of tbe smoke, thus keeping tbe flues free from dirt.
With Kem-Kom an inferior coal, such as screenings, can be mixed with tbe ordi
nary coal, and a still greater economy effected.
