News has been received here of the wholesale were poisoning of negroes who attended The Vote Was Mot Bo Larsre as That of Two Years Ago, When Messrs Blantun ana Own were Candidates. Asheville has gone through a number of primaries, but che Democrats never had a brighter day for the primary than dawned this morning. The air was cool and crisp, but not cool enough for over coats, and the first peep o' sun over Beaucatcher spread a flood of glory over the town that contiuned all day. The average voter did not get up early Workers were up. however, and bright and earlv set about doing what their hands might find to do. The Straight outs were the busy men. while the "Re formers" stood off and looked on. Some smiled and some didn't. There was onlv one tkket to vote, and that was the Straightout, as follows: For Mayor T. 1-. Starnes. For Aldermen First ward. H. A Guduer: Second ward, I. E. Dickerson Third ward, W. V. Low; i-ourm ward. W.J. Hough. Advisors I. M. lvorick. who nas de clined I. I. H. Carter. I. M Cr.cn. The executive committee left three places on this ticket to be filled by the rtepubli cans At 9:30 o'clock there bad been not more than 10 votes cast at both boxes This caused a uoet to break out with this freak : n those days shall come out a man Irom the land of Us . Who wont Jto into the primary, and will defeat the man that does. But the Straigbtouts onlv winked the other eve and smiled, as if to say "lust wait awhile." About 9:50 Alderman Baird went to the East ward polls, took up a ticket and started to deposit it in the box. "Hold on a minute," he said, and began looking it over. He read the ticket aloud caretully, remarking alter each one "good enough'' and "all right. and then at U-.50.30 shoved tne Dai lots in. Two Vears Ako. At the Democratic primary held in Asheville on April 8, 1891, the votes were as (olio ws in ?ach of the wards: East ward, C. D. Blanton, 201; W. B. Gvyn, 1G6; John W. Starnes, 1; total, 368. West ward, 1). Uianton, u; W. B. Gwyn, 200; R. M. Furman. 1; r. M. Miller, 1; total, G72. This makes a total ot 1.040 votes cast in the two wards. In the nrimarv today, up ,o d o'clock there had been cast in the bast ward 111 votes, and in the West ward 1H9 votes, a total of 280. It must not be thouirht. however, that Mr. Starnes necessarilv received bis full vote. Many men who will vote the Straightout ticket did not go into the nrimarv because thev did not consider it necessarv to do so, as there wasonly one candidate for mayor 10 be voted tor, To Warm Things l'p. Next week will see one of the hottest campaigns Asheville local politics has ever known. Plans arc being made for an oratorical canvass in each of the wards, und meetings will be held nearly every night. STRONG DRINK BE CURED ? at MOVHsin: It is needless to moralize on the direful effects of intoxicating liquors when nsed to excess. Moralists have written thousands of books thereon; philanthro pists have founded asylums and reform atories; physicians have labored and ex postulated; wives and mothers have pleaded tearfully, yet the terrible fact remains that the curse is more rampant than ever. What is to be done? Legis lation has proved unavailing. So far as it goes, law is right; but appetite cannot be controlled by the statute book. We must treat the drink habit intelligently and understasdingly, and when we claim it is a disease and should be treated as such, we believe we have come near the method by which the problem can be solved. Arguments, threats and punishment have proved futile. Let ns now try rea son and common sense. Drunkenness is the outcome of a nervous disease, either acquired or inherited. The patient, in the great majority of cases, is willing, nay anxious, to be cured,. His will power, however, has become paralyzed, and he must have all the aid obtainable to re new the battle for the recovery of his manhood, and maintain it successfully. The Houston Narcotic Cure Company make an urgent appeal to the public in the interest ot humanity, temperance and reform. We would respectfully ask that all good people lend their aid and that church, charity and temperance organiza tions, also all persons who have seen and felt the influence and evil effects resulting from the use of alcohol or narcotics in their own families or otherwise, co oper ate with us in securing the attendance at our institute for the treatment of men and women who have been so unfortu nate as to fall victims to the excessive use of alcohol, opium, morphine or to bacco. We guarantee an absolute cure for these habits or will cheerfully re fund the money. Correspondence confi dential. Address for terms, circular and testi monials. The Houston Narcotic Cvre Co.
