The news of Alderman T. C. Startles' withdrawal from the mayoralty race, which appeared in The Citizkn (which, by the way, continues to print the news) literally caught the town by the ears that portion of it which takes an inter est in politics, at least. The rumor that Mr. Starnes had withdrawn had been bruited on the streets, and everybody wanted to see the confirmation, if it was a fact. Anions the Detn'crats who read the news the must common expression was one ot regret that Mr. Starnes bad taken such a course. "Even if we had been been beaten, and we don't admit any such event," they said, "it would have been better to go down fighting." The Reformers were in high leather. taking it as an admission that the Re form ticket was on top. There, was witb them, however, no appearance of an idea of adopting Mr. Starnes' sugges tion that Capt. Patton follow the exam ple he (Mr. Starnes) had set. One Democrat remarked on reading the head line in The Citizen, "Demociats Can Now Unite on One Ticket," that Thev'll never do anything of the sort." Several prominent Democrats, feeling somewhat bitter over the turn affairs had taken, made bold to declare on the streets that if a straight Republican ticket were put out they woul 1 lenil it their support before they would vote the I'atton ticket. It is hardly possible, however, that in their cooler moments they will for an instant harbor such an idea. Mr. Dlckermn Declines. 1-1 r-.ii : l . . ........ . . Tlw.u BTj LBS I A. Tones today: "Thos. The paper states that the alleged attempt upon the Prime Minister's life was made while Mr. Glad stone was walking- t brought St. James park at midnight last night on his way to his lionic in Downing street. The accuracy of the report of the Ga zette is denied by the friends of Glad stone. They say it is probable that the story is based upon the fact that a man now in custody on a charge ot tiring a revolver in a public thoroughfare, had in his pocket a notebook containing a number of entries detailing the recent movements of Gladstone. Nevertheless there is a growing sus picion that Gladstone was nearer to being fired at than his friends are willing to admit. The man under arrest is Wm Tonend. He i'33 years old. and a resident ot Sheffield. The officers who arrested him saw him mount the steps of Gladstone's residence shortly after Gladstone had entered. When the police ordered him to descend he fiicd. at the officer and subsequently struggled des perately against being arrested. Town send asserts that the discharge of his revolver was accidental. "Well." he con tinued, "I never saw such a state of things oolitically as there is here now. I think Mr. Starnes made a mistake, for more reasons than one, in withdrawing from the contest. 1 honestly believe he could have been elected by at least ISO majority. But as it looks now, the 'Re form' ticket will certainly le elected. And it will mean trouble for us in the next campaign in this district. 1 he Ninth is riot any too safe, and Buncombe conty really is the balance of power in the district. This factional tiyht in the Democracy will hurt us in the next Con gressional election. Why, Jeter 1'ritch ard is here now, getting every point he can pick up that will be of use to him. "If the 'Reform ticket is elected, it will be, in mv opinion, a Republican victory. There is'little ta'.k of running a Republi can ticket straicntout. n tnis is aunc, the fight will merely lie one ot popularity of the candidates. If no Democratic ticket is in the field, then I am willing to let these men go in and run the city govern ment for one year. Then at the end of that time let there be a comparison of the work of that and the present admin istration. I am perfectly willing to have the comparison made. Then one or the other must go down under the proofs of a year's work. "But, mind you, 1 am a Democrat, and if there is a Democratic ticket in the field I am for its success, tooth and nail. If there is not then I am 'handsoiT.' There is nothing in politics for me; I have lost money every day since I went into it but I'm for the party every time, and don t forget it. A. CSov. Tillman Ulves I'P Man Who HonKht His Prolecllon. ColI'Uiiia, S. C, April 2. Tohn Pet erson, a negro, was hanged to a tree tonight at Denmark, a small village, and riddled with bullets by a mob of GOO men, under the suppositon that lie had assaulted a 15-years-old girl named Bes sie Baxter. The assault was committed ten days ago. There is every reason to believe that Peterson was innocent. He bad been suspected of the crime and came to Co lumbia last Saturday and delivered him. sell to the Governor, asking his protec tion. The Governor turned him over to a constable to be taken to Denmark for trial and wired a deputy to have present witnesses whom Peterson claimed could establish an alibi for him. Peterson was thus sent by the Governor to be tried tor his life by a mob court - He apiieared like an innocent man. He told a straight story and looked fear lessly at his questioners. They took him betore Miss liaxter. tlic saiu tnat he was not her assailant. A colored woman swore that Peterson was in Denmark on the morning of the assault. The court adjourned without getting any tangible evidence against Peterson, the odds being greatly in his favor. But the crowd was so frenzied that it could not be restrained. Gov. Tillman is severely criticised for having sent Peterson to his doom in Denmark. N. V. World. All New York awoke this morning to find a steady downpour of rain ushering in the day of the great naval pageant. A chilly north east wind added to the discomfort, and some hundreds of thousands of people who had arranged to view the grandest marine spectacle ever presented in Amer ican waters were disappointed. The rain, however, did not keep all at hom . There was a stead- stream toward Vnrtli River all the morniiiir. and hun dreds of excursion boats, steam yachts, j tugs and other cratt were filled with sightseers who were not to be kept at home merely by disagreeable weather. Other crowds, who sought places along the docks, on the tops of buildings and at Riverside Park, plodded through the mud find stood in pools of water with umbrellas and mackintoshes. At 10:30 the signal boat Cushing started out and carried to each vessel in line the information that the review was postponed until 1 p. m. by Secretary Herbert at the suggestion of the Presi dent. President Clcv.-ln nd and cabinet were driven from the Victoria hotel to the toot of West Twenty-third street, shortly after 1 o'clock. When the President went aboard the Dolpbin there was a ruffle of drums and the marines presented arms.
