Alderman Gudger and Advisors Hunt and Williams excepted. His first sallv was at City Engineer Lee, when Advisor Miller, for the committee appointed to investigate alleged damnttes to the property of T. C. I Hough had withdrawn as candidate for aldeiman on the Democratic ticket. Mr Hough denies this. The campaign will wind up with Reformers' rally 'in the court house this evening. The terms of office of the officials to be elected Monday will begin at noon on the third Monday in May. 1 he mayor will serve for one year. The Aldermen from the First and Third wards will serve two years, and those from the Second and Fourth wards tor one year. The mayor will receive a salary of $500 while the Alderman will receive $200 each per annum. The Mass Meeting. A mass meeting will be held by the Re formers in the court house this evening. The gates of the World's Fair city were opened wide t .is morning to receive the advance guard of distinguished visitors who, on Monday lext, will dignify by their presence the formal opening of the World's Colum bian Exposition. The reception committee met the train bearing the Duke l.e Veragua and party at tbe Grand Crossing, which the tram reached shortly after 9 o'clock. Here a stop was made to enable the committee to get aboard. Tbe meeting was en tirely informal. The train reached the Union depot at 10:30. A large crowd had assembled and a rousing cheer was given as the train stopped. w nen tne ducal party alighted, President 1'almer formally welcomed the Duke to the World's Fair and to Chicago. The Duke in a tew words expressed tne nonor, pleasure and gratification it gjave him to hud h-msell within the hortlers ot a citv with tbe greatness of which, to a certain extent, he was to become tamil iar. A nrocession was theu formed and the ducal party escorted to the Audi torium hotel. At 2 o'clock Mavor Harrison and the aldermanic committee presented to the Duke the freedom of the city. Hot words ensued and Dickson tried to borrow a plank with which to compel Grant to get off the earth. Before Dickson could carry out his threat a policeman arrested them and Recorder Miller this morning fined tbem $1 each and costs. Henry Saunders and Amanda Saun ders, husband and wife, colored, were up for a family jar, which originated wben Henry informed his wife of his intention to go serenading. The Herald this morning has the following: "An unsuc cessful attempt to steal Christopher Columbus' ashes was made last evening. The glass containing them was broken and the priceless remains were lifted from their resting place by an unknown thiet whose presence desecrated the sa cred convent La Kahida at Jackson park. The ashes were carried Irom a dark cor ner to the light of the window and care fully examined that no mistake should be made. But the delay for examination p-oved disastrous to the nurpoae of the vandal and saved to the exposition and posterity all that is left of the mortal remains ot the great explorer and bene factor."
