July 3, 1893. MEWS IN OUR OWN STATU. MONDAY. JULY 3, 1893 After all President Cleveland did not call Congress together; it was the people who did that. They spoke through the press in a voice not to he misunderstood "And whereas the present perilous con dition is laruelv the result f fin.-.oci.-.l policy which the executive branch of the government hnds embodied in unwise laws which must be executed until re pealed hv Congress." tuna ine residents proclamation. The unwise laws to which he rcVrs were placed there by the Republican party an it be possible that any Democrat will vote to keep them there? i ne citizen rejoices with the rest ol the country that an extra session ol Congress has been called, though the seventh of August was not its idea of an earlv session. Indeed, we believe that Congress should have been culled in ses sion not later than May first. Had it been, the same causes that have com pelled the calling of an extra session now would have brought its business to a head by tins time uutl the country's interests would have been better served because earlier served. The only gain to the country that is to be seen on the sur face by the delav in calling Congress to gether lies in the fact that Congressmen will hayc had every opportunity to in form themselves as to the opinions ol their constituents; they will know their wishes in i he matter of t he financial leg islation now being agitated. ii it suggested mat Congress meet only long enough to give the President power to deal with the Sherman act as he deems fit, and th n adjourn, leaving everything in his hands. Thk Citizkn does not believe this plan can obtain tin approval of a majority of the Congress men. Certainly it should not. Congress is the legislative body; let it attend to its work as it sees it, not delegating it 1.0 executive nruticn 01 tne govern ment, any more than to the judicial. Moreover, the silver men will have some thing to say Irom their pwint of view; and it is hardly necessary to say that that point Is not the President's. The whole question is likely to be rediscussed from the beginning down to the suspen sion of free coinage in India. In the end the silver men will be de feated, but it cannot he expected of them, as men sincerely holding certain opin ions, that they will lie down at the first demand of the majority and deliver sil ver wholly to those whom they regard as its enemies. Nevertheless, the Sherman law must go. The mere belief that its days are numbered will revive confidence and stimulate declining industries. Grange LETTERS FKOM THE I'EnPlM. The Oreaaed I" I j Knc?.
