THE ASHEVILLE DAILY CITIZEN. Wednes lay livening, July 12, 1893. 'Wt4 MOT KILLED. Futlber Acconut ol The AITrav Near Webster. Col. John C. Tipton, editor of the Shelby Review, and State statistician of the Agricultural department, came iu this morniiiR from a shot t trip to l-'rank-lin, Macon county. Kranklin was Col. Tipton's old home, although tliis was liistiist trip there in more than HO years. Col. Tiptou yives Tiik Citizi:n some additional particulars of the stabbiii affray near Webster which was men tioned yesterday. It appears that a crowd of men were on Savanna b creek Sunday afternoon drinking and carous ing, when Will Morgan and "Ccbc" lvast ride ( not Ivstcs as printed yesterday I Rot into a lifjht and Kastridc was tabbed four or live times by Morgan. lCastridjc was not killed, as stated yes terday, although he is thought to be fatally injured. Coh Tipton also tills of how be unin tentionally "Kt up a race" tor a "dis penser ot the liquid ijneer. While I. ul. Tipton was crossinu a mountain on his way to 1'raiiklin lie saw Ivinj in the road a man's hat. lie had the driver ,gct out and pick up the hat. Soon alter Tie overtook an ox wajjon driven by a man who seemed to be on the lookout for something- Col. Tipton talked a little with the man, nave him the hat and passed on. When he reached Franklin he casually mentioned the circumstance to United States Com missioner Cunningham who eairtv requested a description of I he man. When it was Kiven the Commissioner remarked that that was a moonshiner for w hom they hail been looking a hjiij; time, but who was always too "slick" tor the otlieeis. Deputv marshals were at once sent out to catch the moonshiner if possible. They came near him, but thoughtlessly galloped over a bridge, which gave warning to the blockader, and when thev overtook the wagon everything was there except the man. The officers set out in the mountains on the fleeing man's trail, hut at last ac count he hail not been caught. ;o:hi; wi-:ht. llaiwontl and Clan Hear 1 rom Collector 1-:iIum. Collector Klias today appointed 1'. K. Moore of Clay county, distillery sur veyor, the compensation of which posi tion is $1 5() a day and a day for ex ciiscs. The appointee is a son ot the late Chas. Moore oi liuucomhc, and is an uncle ot Judge Chas. A. Moore of Asheville. Maj. W. V. Sti ingtield of Haywood county, was also appointed lodav, the place given him being a $t.uM clerkship in the Asheville otlice. Maj. Stringlield is one ot the most prominent men of Haywood, ami at one time owned anil cotnliic'.cd the Haywood White Sulphur Springs hotel aL W'a y ticsv ille. All of Collector Klias' appointments so lar have been of men of prominence in their sections, and have been made with the idea of carrying out t he intentions expressed by Collector Klias to Tin: Citi-.l-.N that is, to elevate the revenue ser vice in every possible way. The Collector has sent out an older to stamp deputies to the elfect that thev are to receive nothing but currency or postothce money orders in payment ot I'niteil Slates taxes. Checks will not be taken. The last Marion 1-Yce I,nncc says that Collector ICIias has formed a new divis ion out ul Mcliowell. Yancey ami Burke counties. This has not yet luen done, but probably will be soon. The Charlotte News says : "Mr. S. 1'iice Klias of Charlotte is a tirst cousin to Hon. Kope Klias. I'rice is averse to meddling in politics, but he has been prevailed upon to write several letters, to Colonel Kope, iu behalf of his friends. Kope is evidently short on stamps, as his Charlotte kinsman gets mail Iruni almost evervbod v else exept t be Colonel. I'rice thinks that a born politician has a much better pull than a tirst cousin." . InlcrcHtltiK UIscunhIoii, Advisor J. I'. Sawyer, Senator J. M. Campbell, Geo. S. l'owell and 1 r. K. Ilairil had an interesting discussion this norning iu I'owcll Snidcr's stoic. The discussion was on a question put this way by Mr. I'owcll: "Is it better to live as 'Jack' Campbell does, an easy life, with nothing to do and wear tan shoes, than to live as'loc' Haird iloes, hard at work every day, wearing a neat but not gaudy calico necktie, and storing shekels for rainy days?" It w as suggested that the discussion be referred to the Lyceum society, and the talk turned into other channels. I .ft ticatioiial Ihmi It iiit-M 1'iesidcnt Charlcsl.
