Maj. V.' If : Malone was called l the our distinguished Senator Vance in the sentiments which he has recently uttered in his published letters to the people, "That we request our members of Congress to oppose any legislation which tends to the elevation of the value of gold and the consequent demonetiza tion of silver." Upon the adoption of Maj. Malonc's resolutions the meeting adjourned. Washington, Aug. 5. Inquiry at the Treasury department elicits the informa tion that the government has now on hand a ho lit 130,000,000 ounces of fine silver costing $118,000,000. The coin value of the bullion on hand is about S1C7.000.000. If this were coined at the present ratio the government would realize a profit of about $S,000,000. It would take, however, with the pres ent coinage capacity of the United States mints about five years to convert this bullion into silver dollars. Major Malone said that the present crisis in the financial affairs of the coun try needed the spirit ol compromise iu the days ol Clay and Calhoun to bring about a. satisfactory solution. The South and West should not be held to be disloyal if they do not accept the ideas of New England. The cry from Denver is for bread and the cry from Wall street is for gold. States manship and patriotism must come to the front and the politician must tic sunk out of sight. The present assemblage can do no better tiling than pass resolu tions endorsing; Senator Vance for his firm stand in his country's need and for bis repudiation of the shuffling politicians who would sell their souls for a tness of pottage. J. K. Dubosc was callcJ for and iu re sponse said the time hud come for every body to put their shoulders to the whctl to f;et the country out of the present dilemma. lie stood squarely on the Democratic platform and believed that il its principles were carried out the relief needed would come. 4fehc people of the South and West do not desire an advan tage over their brethren of the East, but they do want relief that will be equita ble to all. Congress should place gold and silver on an equality. Judijc J. 11. Metiimon answered the call of the house by saying a fair prop osition would be that not a man on American soil understands the great question under discussion, not even the President, nor yet Senator Vance, for whose opinions he hud the greatest re spect. Judge Mriimon read extracts Irora the platforms of all the parties showing that the people have spoken for silver and that Grover Cleveland is in line with the people if the utterances read are sincere. The straw that broke the camel's back and compelled the call for an extra ses sion, said Mr. Mcrrimon, was the act of the English government in destroying free coinage in India; that ac' dropped the price of silver, closed the mines in the west and sent up the wail for bread from those dccndcnt upon the miners who are leaving that couutry by whatever means they can secure. Wall street says the hard times are the result of a loss uf confidence in the silver dollar; the state ment is false, as the daily transactions ol every citizen will prove. Wall street and a subsidized New York press shout the destruction of the country if the free coinage of the silver product con tinues, but the tale is utterly fallacious. It is the croaking of a horde that is fat tening upon the calamities of the coplc. In conclusion Judge Mcrrimon i said with great earnestness: "1 may be wrong but 1 am going with silver. 1 stand by the silver dollar. 1 stand by Senator Vance and pray that he will be given strength to stand up in Congress on the platform of Democracy until the great issue is settled. I may be wrong, but I'm in a mighty big crowd under the leadership ot many able men." Captain Natt Atkinson said that lie had read the letter of Senator Vauec and that he had listened to the remarks of Judge Mcrrimon and was convinced that there was honesty in the country yet. Ninty-niue hundredths of the people ol the Old North State are solid friends of the silver dollar, and here comes a onc hosa, flea-bitten, wormy, spavined, little fellow, one Joe Caldwell, who tries to teach statesmanship to Zebulon 13. Vance! Judge T. A. Jones said the financial problem, if too great for the minds of the statesmen ot the countrv was most certainly beyond him. The interests of Wall strcetrand tlie interests of the toil ers in whatever calling were opposed to each other. A damnable conspiracy has been plotted for the ruin of the country. It compels the gold standard and its grab of the poor man's all, and there are men in this community who arc parties to i tie crime. Col. T. 13. Long said he had come out to bear Judge Merrimon and to listen to the subject. A remark of Judge Jones had called him to his feet; he wished to be distinctly heard on tbcgreatqueslion. All the parties profess to agree in the demand for free coinage. The patriotic men ol the parties mast show their hands, uud the good element of the par ties are going to combine to whip Wall street out of its boots. The way for patriots to do was to rally to Zcb Vance and his ideas as enunciated in his letter; stand with Messrs. Mcrrimon and Jones, who hud conic out and said they were with Senator Vnncc. Two things bad brought the couutry to the condition she is now in the demonetiza tion of silver and the national banking system. "Maryami I3utler," Col. Long said, "the man who has been ridiculed so much, and the conservative clement in the Democrat, Republican and Prohi bition parties and the People's Party ites will stand shoulder to shoulder and show Wall street that the people she can impoverish no longer. Mr. I'lamondon introduced a bet of resolutions of some length, and spoke to them briefly. His resolutions en dorsed the views of Senator Vance, re sol ycd for "the amendment of the vari ous coinage acts so that gold and silver may be converted into bullion and de posited in the treasury ol the United States and gold and silyer certificates be issued thereon tor circulation," and closed with the alliance demands. Chairman Malone introduced the fol lowing resolutions, not because he op posed Mr. Flamondon's resolutions, but in order to present the sense of the meet ing in the briefest form : "Resolved, That we cordially endorse New Kugland Hard Hit bv Present Depression. One of the biggest schemes for the es tablishment of an industry near Ashc villc that has been known iu this section was made known yesterday. W. K. Whitson, esq., us attorney for the United Industrial company of New York, appeared before the Hoard of Al dermen and gave that body an outline of what was proposed, for the purpose of learning the Hoard's views before work was begun. The United Industrial company pro poses to erect a mammoth knitting plant, for the production of every con ceivable article of knit goods, on the Swannnnoa river, 21 i miles above the city water works. A dam 85 feet high is to be built at this point and a num ber ol buildings for machinery and oper atives are also to go up. The company wislnd to know if the -city would raise ;tny objection to the construction of the dam on the ground that the city wa ter supply might be contaminated thereby. It did not care to begin work and afterwards be stopped by the city. 1 He Hoard told Mr. Wuitsou the ques tion was one tor the consideration ot ex perts; that the city would object if there were any danger ot contamination. Utn wise the city would, not make the slight est objection. The matter will likely come up at a future tncetini;. Alderman Jones said the city could enjoin the com pany Irom building the dam it coutanii nation were probable. 1 he company winch proposes to estab lish this industry has been quietly at work for some time, looking over laud, etc. W.
