Crawford presided over the House of Representa tives, by the courtesy of Speaker Crisp. This is a distinction rarely conferred upon so youiiK a man, and shows the estimation in which the Congressman from the 9th district is held by his com peers. Mr. Crawford held the chair for a considerable time, and presided with ease and ruled promptly on a number ot questions under consideration by tlie House. H4V4MNAI1'N l-.Mt'A I 10 Savannah has just had a most narrow escape from repeating the experience ut Roanoke, Va., with a lynching mob. A deaf mute ",irl was crucllv assaulted by a negro, so that her life may be sacrificed to his brutish passion. The negro w;is known, but made his escape. One Wil liams, who much resembled the K11'"' negro, was arrested, but though be told contradictory stories on being suddenly charged with the crime, it was never theless fully proved that he was vh lly innocent. The Savannah I'ress says: "This circumstance should put an end to all future attempts at lvivhing here. If Williams had not been iiicntiueii hv Mr. Smith arid had been brought to Sa vannah by .Mr l.utliurrnw the mob at the depot would 11 tuloubtedl v ha vc ta ken him from the officers without waitmu for identification, and an innocent m m s life would have been sacrificed to satiate the bloodv appetite of self-appointed ex ecutioners. "but before the negro would have met his death innnv of the mob would hav been turned into corpses. Sergt. Kit- lourhv ami Detective Bossell thoroughly canvassed the situation together am both determined to fire with dcadlv in tent as soon as the rush commenced. In such a crowd, at least "hi. a vollev ot lead would have furnished lots ot work for the undertakers of the city." The incident again illustrates the fact that too of tin a lynching mob does m so much demand the life of the guiltv man as it does the life of some man, matters not so much whose, so long he is accused. It is generallv agreed that the crime o rape is one that calls lor the life of th cuiltv one; but until it can be shown that mob law is lessening that crime not demoralizing the community which the mob works, and does result in the killing of in.itiv innocent men until then lvuchiug must be d nounced bv everv lover of law and order I Chicago Skicing Tin-: Faik. "And the rioor of the house he over laid with uohl. within and without." "And Solomon made all the vessels that pertained unto the house of the Lord: the altar of jjold, and the table of Hold, whereupon the she w bread was. "And the candlesticks of pure gold, five on the riht side and tiveoii the left, before the oracle, with the flowers und the lamps and the tonus of'old. "And the bowls and the sunders and basins and the Simons and the censers ut pure old: and the hi tines of "old, and for the doors of the inner house, the most hoiv place, and for the doors of the house, to wit, of the temple." The Sun adds : "No mention is made anywhere in this chapter of" vessels cf silver. The reason ot it is yiven in Chapter X, verses I'l and 127:" "And fill KinK Solomon's drinkint; ves sels were of jjold, and all t he vessels ot the house of th- forest of Lebanon were ot pure ijohl. -Voiif vve-e ul silver: it whs tie thing uecmintcil 'it' in the iluvs utSul onion. Moreover, the next verse alter the one which says silver "was nothing ac counted of in the days of Solomon " rea d s : "Once in three years came the men of Tharshish brinuiiiH jjeil-l and silver, ivory, apes and peacocks;" Showing that silver was, after ail. in good standing m those days and in that locality even if nothing was"arcounted" of it. In f act, that phrase, one cannot help thinking, has the sound of exagger ation. Klsewhere silver is mentioned side by side with gold; as for instance: 1 Kings. VII. 51 : . . . And Solo mon brought in the things that Ilavid his father had dedicated; even the silver and the gold and the vessels did he put among the treasures of the house of the Lord." Senator Morgan was as nearly coirect as his critic. No doubt a vast deal of silver was used in buildiug and orna menting Solomon's temple. There are frequent references to it. Cltanme The I .aw. Men who have seen criminals of the most depraved type lie in jail a year or two after the commission of some terrible crime, pending the hearing of motions for nev trials on technical grounds, feel that the effects of their sub sequent punishment are lost on other men of similar brutal instincts. Actuated by this knowledge, and the desire to teach a lesson that will not be speedily forgotten, they override the law and deal out justice without the intervention of the conrts. ou a 1 1 1 a c lead 111 l he tit mi v papers about, the queer way restaurant waiters have ot iMvuiir orders tor meats. 1 was coinage. would oppose the repeal of the Sherman law itliout substitute legislation. I'rom that dav to this Mr. Vance has not been civeii a single appointment within or without the State ot North Carolina. Indeed, l.lias seems to have been making a tight against anci- ii t he State ever since his appointment. Had he gone to North Carolina and be haved himself, although Senator ance h id oimoscd his appointment, he would not opposed his confirmation. Now, however, Vance w ill do all 111 his power to prevent the confirmation of a man who seems to be working to knile nun in the State. Any other selt-respeeting man would do as Vance is doing. Senator Vance expects to defeat the confirmation of Klias. He does not ex- pect to have Coulter appointed, lie will not ask it, but he does expect that the man w ho is appointed and confirmed by the Senate will not b-.- politically antag onist ic to him.
