I'eaehtrce How, which has lor some time been weeding its unsavory pre cincts uielty, broke out in a fresh spot last nijjht, and as a result five men today are suffering from wounds of greater or less seriousness irflieted with knives and rocks. The facts so far as obtainable are that several visitors to Asheville, who came in to attend Federal court, went to No. 49 I'eaehtrce How, a resort presided over by two women named Davis and Austin, about 2 o'clock and applied fur admission. They were told that thcy could remain a certain length of time, when other persons were expected. The crowd went in, and wMle there the ex pected men arrived. Just how the trouble sprang up is known, but a fight ensued and l Cline of Dry-son City, N. Wheeler of tiilt niore, Deputy- Marshal Cogden of Gra ham county, Hud Cunningham of Frank lin and A. C. Galloway of lackson count v, were injured. Clmc was cut two or three times in the shoulder. Wheeler re ceived a dangerous cut in the lung on the right side. Cogd n was hit in the head with a rock, while Cunninuham and Gal loway received knife thrusts. Clmc is at G. M. Cole's on North Main street, at tended by Dr. W. I'. Whittington, while Wheeler is at the Worley house just be yond the French Hroad, attended by Dr. L. H. McHrayer. Cogden left on the early morning train for his home in Graham. Patrolmen Yeatman and Dowers took the case this morning, secured the names of the men injured an j started out to make arrests. They went to the scene of the row. accompanied by Mr. Gallo way, one of the men who was hurt. As they approached the house Al r. Galloway pointed out a man who, be said, had taken part in the cutting. The man so indicated started off, and Patrolman Yeatman ran after him, firing several shots over his bead to frighten the man. lie got awav, however, at the time, but a few minutes later was arrested by Patrolman Powers. The man arrested is Hyiium Trogdcn, who lives near the cotton tactorv. lie was taken before Justice Frank Car ter and by him committed- to jail to await a hearing, when witnesses can be had. i!niti:-i ntati." .-oi-sr. Nl- A Conviction for Ktiiioviiilf tro tilvcerlne. W. S. Saul, manager of the Nantahala Marble and Talc company, was defend ant in a suit beard in tl.e I'nited States court yesterday afternoon. Mr. Saul was charged with violating the laws by the removal of nitro glycerine. The ex plosive was transported over the Marietta and North Georgia railroad from Marietta to Murphy. The verd ct was "guilty." The fine has not yet been imposed. The statute provides a fine of not less than $1,000 nor more than $1(1,000. Hob Tate, W. C. Hall. scnr Ma rt in, lack King, Robert Williams, Thad Cathcy, W. U. Shope, Clavton Farley, Wm. Cline, jr., Robert Clmc, Krastus Downs and Jeff Drown hail judgment suspended in their cases upon the pay ment of $U0 each. Similar disposition was made of the cases auainst Thus. Hyatt. John McNeill, and Win. Mathis, the amount to be paid being $1(1 each. Fatcnton Mitchell paid $lf. John Wesley Johnson and Moses J. Peterson were found not guilty. United States vs. Harrison Mitchell; not guilty. REV Ml. Bl'RNKTT 1111111:1). Funeral Serviced at Alexamler'M Chapel YeHlcrclHy. The funeral exercises over the remains of the late Rev. J. S. Burnett occurred yesterday at Alexander's chapel, north of the city. A number of sorrowing rel atives and friends went from Asheville to pay the last tribute of respect to the beloved minister, and the chapel was filled with those who knew him din ing his long residence here. The services were conducted by Rev. Dr. lames Atkins, president of the Ashe ville Female college. Mr. Burnett belore his death expressed the desire that at his burial there should be no formal funeral sermon, but that if there were any pres ent who wished to testily to the help lie had been to them in a spiritual way, they should speak. Remarks were made by Gen. Robt. M. Vance, Hon. H. A. Gudgcr. W. B. Lyda, Rev. II. F. Chreitz berg, Cnpt. M. J. Fagg, Rev. Mr. Pick ens, Rev. Dr. Atkins and Rev. T. Iv. Wagg, all lienring witness to the great goodness of the dead minister.
