Negro Wanted Iu Cleveland
A neat capture was that made yester
day afternoon wheu deputy sheriffs ar
rested and jailed Lawsou Howard, a
colored man wanted in Cleveland county
on a charge of murder. The scene of the
capture was the old Murdoch house, a
mile and a half north of the city, occu
pied now by n colored family. This
house had been searched a few days ago,
but Howard had evidently scented a
mouse and skipped. 1
Yesterday the ottu-ers located Howard.
When they approached the house they
were seen by Howard, who ran from one
room across a hallwav and into another
room. Deputy Hampton saw Howard
as he rode up, and hastily dismounting
ran in and tound Howard braced against
the d or. A hnrd shove forced the door
and the bunted man was run down.
Howard made no resistance and threw
up bis bands at the first command, lie
was brought to the city and placed in
jail and the Cleveland authorities noti
ced. Howard admitted to Jailer Jami
son that he was the man wanted. He
stands six feet two and weighs over 200
pounds.
Theni'irder with which Howard is
charged was committed in upper Cleve
land January 19. the victim bting Hula
Jones, and whs the result of, il is
thought, a dispute about a calf. The
man killed was a relative ol Patrolman
Shuford ol the Asheville police fur. c.
Last night Howard got John Allison,
a "trusty" in the jail, to wiite a letter
for him to Julius Brooks with whom
Howard had been living. When it was
written Howard wanted Allison tn s' lid
it to Brooks. Instead Allison delivered
it to Jailer Jamison, who turned it over
to Deoutv Sheriff F. M. Jones. The letter
was as follows:
"1 am captured and in jail. Flense sec

Washington, Feb. 1(5 The rumors
concerning I be alleged action of tbe Sen

sugar schedule ot the tann bill caused
some commotion about the capitol. The
rumor was that sugar was to be left on
the free list. Upon the authority of a
member of the suh committee, the posi
tive statement is made that the commit
tee has come to no conclusion regarding
the sugar schedule and that there is no
foundation for the statement that sugar
has been or would be put on the free list.
This Senator also said that until definite
information was received from the Treas

will be done.
The members of the sub-committee
