Is tinitl to Itn Workinu; UoinlrH in l'lirllylng a I'rrni-li City. The most wonderful stories arc told f the disinfecting power of sea water fter electrical treatment, as exhibit ed at Havre, where experiments upon very large scale have been made under the direction of M. Ilermite, the inventor of the system. The following is fin extract from I lie special corre spondence of the London Standard: A central station for the propar electrolysing of sea water had been es tablished at Havre, on Qui l.ombardic, near tho Angouleme bridge, and pipes in connection with it had been laid through all the streets of the St. Fran cois quarter, inhabited by some twelve thousand people of the poorest classes, and formerly the hot -bed of every in fectious disease. The electrolysed sea water fot d through the pipes had, however, effected a marvelous change. The streets watered with the disinfect ing liquid, by means of hose connected w ith the pipes, had lost that, putrid lor which formerly liiade them not only repugnant, but an ever-present danger in the very center of the town. In addition to tin, two of the most insalubrious houses in the district had en chosen by M. David, the town architect, for the application of the Ilermite system to dwellings. One of them was situated at No. "1 Hue de la Fontaine, and the other at :;." Itni d'ICdrevilli'. A large tank, connected with the elect rolyzfM sen-water mains, had been nlaced at. the ton of each of these six-story buildings, and pipet from the tank carried down to tlusl the closets and sinks on the various lloors. In the ease of the house No. Idle de la Fontaine, the now odorless water from the svphoS.-of the closeti- and sinks was eondinited through pipes to the street gutter, down which it ran some distain-e before it ultimately fell into the sewer. The object of this ar rangement was to niter the public a constant, visible and ol factory proof of the purifying qualities of electro- lv.ed sea water. The disinfecting liquid, so to say, consumed the sewage matter, as well as the microbes it con tained, and in passing along tho gut ter and through the sewers it con tributed to the disinfection of both oi them by the chlorine it still contained With tho Ilermite system nil the sew- ago water could, without inconvcu leuce, bo allowed to tlow into the soa, or even iuto rivers, for it purines in stead of contaminating them." Two of tho most wonderful stalac tite caves in the world arc located within the territory of L'tah ouo live miles southof Toquervillc and thcothcr twenty-five miles west of St. George. Neither is rcmarkuble on account of its size, and, according to tho St. Louis Republic, the dignifying title of "cav ern" baa never been bestowed upon cither of tho two. Tho Urand canal Itself is to be used for tue exhibition of one of tho floating gar dens cultivated by the Aztecs in Mex ico before the Spanish conquest of the country. The center of the canal is to bo occupied by a large island built on piles, with bridges connecting it with the two shores, which is to havo aquaria, grottoes and cascades, with cages for aquatic birds, and the great sheet of water is to be additionally or namented by an exact reproduction of the little fleet of elegant boats that Louis XIV, launched on its surface when Versailles was first built. All this sounds most imposing; but we are devoutly thankful that tho time for It has not yet come. It is like the story of the philosopher who was to teach the king's donkey to speak in a year's time, on pain of death, and never bothered about the penalty on the ground that the king might die, the donkey might die, or he himself might die, and whatever hap pened he had a year to the good. So, as we have seven years before us, we do not yet as a rule wail about future eontlngeneteaV puny, who was engaged in driving a tunnel through u mountain called La Virgin Iteneh for the purpose of tap- nimr the river beyond. When the light was first let into this wonder ful underground chamber the effect is said to have been startling, tho roof ! and floor glittering with cubes and I points of crystal alum and the roof studded witn minions or rain-coiorcu ! stalactites. i Thu lllack Warrior cave is a counter part of the Virgin and was discovered bv miners ut a point where their tun- ne was three hundred and sixty-live foct beneath the surface A Ifbuas with a History. Much picturesque and unfounded nonsense has heen written about al. leged wild camels reported to wander j in the production m lienls along the Mil lev oi uie 'ma river, in Arizona. "Teamsters along the valley," wrote one imaginative paragraphcr, "have much trouble from these beasts, whose ungainly tlgurc frighten the mules and horses so that great difficulty in keep ing them to the trail. The cowboys eyed them from a dis tance critically and disapprovingly, passed facetious ami disparaging re marks, and would none of them. Only tho fe.,:ed and turbuncd Arab drivers brought with the camels to the 1'nitcd Slates could handle them, and lacking assistants, they could do little In I he way of utilizing the animals for freight currying. So the camels and their foreign swarthy attendants were still a useless national charge in Texas when the war broke out, and the strange, hump backed, lop-lipped beasts, with other federal property, were seized by the confederates, who in this case found that they had the equivalent of several elephants mi their hands. They couldn't use them, thev didn't want to kill them. I so throughout the war the camels remained corralled and fetl at a confederate post, which at the clone of the struggle fell again into the hands of the union government, with Its troublesome charge augment ed in numbers by natural increase. This foistering of the camel herd again upon the federal government is said to have neon regarded by the lex ans us it redeeming feature in the col lapse of the confederacy. The camels' iiiiainiabilityand intractability had not improved, luitquite the reverse, through their long period of inactivity. l'he ditlieiilties of attending to them threw ihe perils of inule-wliacking far Into the shade, and were regarded us partaking of the hazard of battle. When political commotions hud some- wlial quieted down, in the reconstruct tii:n period, so that matters of detail could be attended to, thecitmels, by or der of the secretary of war, were sohl to the highest ladders, and so were gradually disposed of to keepers of menageries throughout the country. There was one exception. An ex- army oiiicer relates limi wiuie no was stationed at l-'ort t'liion, N. II.. twenty live wars ago, the hist survivor of tin herd wandered cbout on the reserva tion, the unfailing wonder of the Mex icans. as, standing on tho ground, he browsed on the weeds aial grass that grew on top of their Hat, earth-roofed, one storu'd hut .Mexicans made up family parlies and traveled long distances to see the beast but regarded it always with distrust, crossing themselves at its approach and uttering a prayer against "el dlublo." Of what became of this lone survivor then there seems to he no record more thu n of tlio Arab drivers. Theso na tive drivers were lost to sight In the ex citement of the clvul war. They were pet-hups sent back at gov ernment expense, or otherwise, found their way to their own country; others may have followed the camels that were sold and have become employes of ineninferiesi it Is probable that some of them now might lie found among the oriental peddlers who find the Spanish speaking southwestern regions so attractive a Hold for their business.
