Eowaki) Atkinson, the eminent econ omist, says he expects a return of the general activity of trade by July 1, 1S94-. Tue receivers of thel'niou Pacific road lowered the wages of some of iis eir. ploycs and then claimed that they could be held to continue at work against their will. Judge Caldwell of the Ki,i;hth Ju dicial circuit of the I'nitcd States has made short work of this doctrine, lie says : "The period of compulsory personal service, save as a punishment lor crime, bus passed in this country. In thi country it is not unlawful tor employes to associate, consult anil conler together with a view to maintain or increase their wages by lawlul and peaceful means, any more than it was urilaliil for tli receivers to consult and comer together for the purpose ot reducing their wage "SNOnUtl.l.tt ANU ORAJitiliS A sad wail couus from Charlotte. In the first edition of the book, "Snowballs and Oranges." published by the Rich mond and Danville for advertising pur poses, our lively neighbor did not up pear to great advantage. A ncv cditioi has bceti printed, and the Observer says it "seems esjieci illy gotten c ut for Ashe ville. There are 12 pages devoted to! thnt city. One chapter on the subject is printed twice in order to make the sub ject matter longer." Charlotte, which really dcservis better treatment, is given two paragraphs. The Observer should remember that it is impossible to have too much of a good thing; and if one chapter on Asheville was printed twice it must have been be cause so determined an effort was being made by the Kichmond and Danville to appreciate this city that it, for once, overreached itself a little. But Charlotte may well remember its limitations. She is not a resort town, but one that has so strong a hold on manufactures that even cities that have one chapter ol their glories printed twice may well envy her. But Asheville, in her particular line, is peerless and unap proachable, and deserves and pavs for all the space she gets in the public prints.
