This morning at 11 o clock Mr. Ivvcr- ctt, by private agreement, endeavored to hypnotize Ur. . A. Watson and l'rol. . D. lvgglcston. After two failures on Dr. Watson he made three attempts on Mr. lvgglcston. At the third attempt, though the Professor declared that he was per fectly conscious and wus not hypnotized. lie was unable to stand up when told by Mr. Everett that his knees were very weak. Dr. Watson was again tried. In short time Mr. livcrctt told the Doctor that he could not open his eyes nnd he did not open them. After about three seconds Mr, Everett told him to oiicn them und he did. The Doctor asserted most positively that he could have oM.'ncd them but the pressure of Mr. ivvcrctt 8 thumb between Ins eyes was too great. However, the reporter saw Mr. Everett relieve the pressure and the Doctor s eyes remained shut, The most remarkable power yet shown was when Fred Miller, who hud just come in, was hypnotized und was told thut his hearing was very acute. One of the gentlemen present sat about 1.1 feet from young Miller and whispered in as low n tone as was possible 111 the- lonna tiou of words, nnd Miller repeated every word. Dr. Wataon, who was seated by Miller, did not hear a word. The latter then sat in the chair and whispered so low that he was not heard even by those who were very near him. Milltr rciientcd the words, however. Whatever one believes about hypnot ism it is intcrt sling to investigate the matter. FOR BETTER ROADS. The House Conferees will Mot Meet The Beuales Changes In The Sugar, Coal, Iron, Cotton, Wool and Glass Schedules. Washington, July 17. This morning Senator Vorhccs issued a notice to each Republican member of the conference ommittce inlorming him that there would be a meeting of the full conference committee on the tariff bill at J o'clock this afternoon. It is understood that there are wide differences between the conferees of the House and Senate along line of bill and including especially sugar, coal, iron, oolens, cotton and the glass schedule. The House members of the conference committee stand out for a majority of the House provisions, while the Senate conferees sre equally firm in demanding mat the bill in the foregoing particulars must remain as the Senate fixed it. The meeting of the Democratic club in the court bouse last evening was not irgcly attended, but there was an inter esting session. President Luther pre- ded. F. W. Thomas moved the appoint mciit of a committee on the selection of club headquarters. J. D. Murphy thought it probable that the congress ioual, judicial and county committees would establish hcudquartcrs here, and it might be best to wait and all would probably secure a suite of rooms to gether. He moved as an amendment thut the matter be referred to the execu ivc committee, with power to act, nnd the amended motion curried. Mr. Murphy asked time for the com mittee to to select an executive commit tee and it was given to next meeting. Mr. Luther urged the members to bring in names of all who would join the club.
