When the Conference Report Is Adopt ed It Goes to the. President. Washington, March 19 At the regu lar meeting of the Senate committee on foreign relations tbe conference report on tbe Cuban resolutions was discussed at length. It was understood that an effort was to b? made to get Sherman to move in open Senate to refer the report back to the committee with instructions to disagree as to the third clause of the House resolution. This was discussed at the meeting, but tbe sentiment of the committee was largelv aeainst such action. The Akheville Democrats have decided to make a straight tight in tbe coming municipal campaign. This decision was reached at a meeting of the executive committee of the city yesterday afternoon. It was decided that a call be Issued for the holding of conventions in each of the wards next Monday night These conventions will select delegates to a city convention to be held Tuesday night, at which candidates for Mayor and Aldermen will selected. The formal call will be issued tomorrow. 1 he committee was led to this action by the action of the Republicans toward tbe citizens' meeting held a few weeks ago. Tulare, Cal., March 19. An attempt was made at one o'clock this morcins to hold up the Southern PacHc railway southbound passenger train betweer Tulare and Goscheu stations. In a duel with one of the robbers, Under Sheriff Earl Daggett was dan?erouslv if not fatally wounded, and Deputy Victor Reed received a bullet in the shoulder which may prove troublesome. One robber, who is reported to be a member of tbe noted Dalton gang, named Mc Comb, was riddled with bullets and dropped from tbe tender of tbe engine dead. SPECIAL TERM IN M'DOWELL. The new express rates fixed by the North Carolina State Railroad commis sion have gone into effect here. Within a radius of 25 miles and under, to points wholly in tbis State, the rate bas been reduced from 40 to 30 cents a hundred pounds. Agent Mullingsof tbeSauthern Express company says that heretofore only one article ice at 25 cents has been shipped at a lower f ate than 40 cents a hundred. 3)J3 Guests at the Battery Park. All moves merrily at the Battery Park these days, and the great hotel presents a scene very much like unto that of a bee hive. The large number of guests there yesterday was increased greatly bv ar rivals on the afternoon trains, many of tbe new comers being attorneys in the C. F & Y. V. railroad case. Three hundred and twenty-five guests sat down to lunch at the hotel today. Manager Stewart This Season. . R. Stewart has resigned bis position as steward of the Swannanoa hotel, and A. P. LaBarbe succeeds bim. Mr. Stew art resigns to begin soon his arrange ments for the opening June 1 of the Hav wood White Sulphur Springs hotel at Wavnesville. Mr. Stewart managed the hotel last season, and the popular young hotel man will likely duplicate his last season's success this year. New Residence In Montford. Still another new residence for Asbe ville is to be put on tbe improvement record. Miss Fannie Hawthorne of West Virginia has bought through the agency of the J B. Y., March 19 The Rif ton powder mill exploded yesterday. Five men were killed, among them two brothers named Decker. Jones. Smaller and Peterson are the names of the other men killed.
